I suggest you go take a look in the mirror. It will help you identify the ignoramus in the future.

My current desktop (2x256 GB stripped array) consistently tests above 900 MB/s read and write and yes, it does make a difference.

I also suggest you learn to read the entire post. If you had, you would have noticed that 800 MB/s is a useful performance increase, but is not in the speed range cited for the Mac Pro and that there could have been performance/battery life trade-offs involved.

its not... the 900MB/s that you get is basically a sequential IO speed, what some people like me actually interested is the random IO speed.
unless you move a lot of sequential data like 50GB of movies in and out from SSD like those RED owners, theres no way you would see any benefit from sequential IO increase.
large numbers 900MB/s sure impress everybody, thats what SSD manufacturers want everybody to think.

The India BTS event started, basically $200 off MBPs. (A news article about it says it "hints" at discounts for other stuff, but the flyer doesn't say anything).

But if Apple's going to use BTS just as a way to get rid of all the old MBPs and then release new ones in the fall or something I'm going to get some voodoo on their stock.

1. Apple is using Samsung and LG to produce LCD panels at the moment, unless Sharp is ready to license their technology or outsource their production theres no way they could match demand of the MBP worldwide.
Sure Apple can stockpile IGZO MBPs, but that would only fulfil the surge of demand when the new MBP is introduced, but subsequent demands? i don't think so.
I don't believe Sharp production line is as big as Samsung AND LG combined.

2. The reason why Mac Pro needs a TB2 to support future apple displays because it doesn't have a God damn display attached to it.
Not all retina owners need a TB display, you can go ahead and ask rMBP 15" owners here, that doesn't warrant a reason to delay the launch by several months

1. Apple "secretly" invested billions in Sharp over the period of last few years (most likely for customized IGZO panel production for rMBP, iPhone, and iPad). They could be using the money from anything to expanding production lines to researching on new technology:

August 2011: http://9to5mac.com/2011/08/16/apple-may-invest-1-billion-in-sharp-for-ipad-and-iphone-displays/

November 2012: https://www.macrumors.com/2012/11/07/did-apple-spend-2-billion-to-bail-out-sharp/

2. The current Nvidia GPU on rMBP is theoretically capable of outputting 4K but the Thunderbolt connector isn't. Considering that the GPU will be updated to faster versions in the upcoming rMPBs, it's a no brainer to include a 4K video output, as it's a professional machine. And this can be only done via Thunderbolt 2. Additionally, as mentioned before, it would increase the prospective customer base for the eventually upcoming 4K Cinema Display, which means more $$ for Apple.

Did it start today?

That must mean the BTS sale starts tomorrow!

$200 off MacBook Pros..? That's great.

Even with that though, it would only bring down the 15" rMBP to $1799 (+ Education discount) and with tax that comes to..$1965, which doesn't help me. :(

the cinema display is a complementary, not a prerequisite to use the rMBP. not everybody who buys a rMBP is expected to purchase a thunderbolt display.
i don't see any problem if they introduce TB2 next year along with retina cinema displays.

to delay rMBP launch just introduce a connector for a nonexistant 4k display is outright ridiculous.

Is the brightness a know issue across all retina models 13" and 15"?

my only gripe about the retina display, is the brightness. It's not quite as bright as a normal display.

Give me Haswell with better speed & battery life
Wireless AC
Slightly brighter display
better graphics
Faster storage
Better FaceTime

So pretty much most of what they said in the original article. :p

Is the brightness a know issue across all retina models 13" and 15"?

I don't know about known issue... It's been reporting to be 20% less bright. It's not a deal breaker, as the retina display is still worth the slight decrease in brightness. I would just like another notch or two above what it currently is. I suspect it will draw quite a bit more power though.

Discrete Graphics

To me, the most important difference between the Air and Pro is still discrete graphics. I do a lot of 3D modeling and CAD, without a dedicated graphics card, even Haswell can not power through those complex modeling needs. Lag and freezing is unacceptable on the new 13" Haswell i7 Air. 13" Macbook Pro Retina had been also out of the question for years without dedicated graphics.

So, anticipating the new Haswell Retina Pro 15". Unfortunately the 7XXM series Nvidia is just refreshed/rebranded Kepler GPU, so I don't know how Apple is going to play this. 765M is minimum or it would be almost the same rebranded chip as a 650M... Go with AMD 8000m series perhaps? The pot looking Mac Pros are going AMD again......

800MB/s is only for ignorant benchmark freaks who doesn't even know what it brings to real life usage.

I'm pretty certain IOPS will jump from 80K to around 160-200K as well.
So random 4K-256K writes and reads will also benefits instead of just large sequential reads/writes. I'm reading also the double the random read/writes.

So that 2,700 small 4 kilobyte text files I have in the form of source code will benefit from faster rsync backups.

This also translates to faster boots as the OS reads a lot of small random files and kexts.

Storage options

The smart move imho, would be to have 2 up to date MBP versions:

- Macbook Air Pro similar if not thinner than current rMBP.

- Macbook Pro using PCIe flash stick and a hard drive with a more advanced fusion storage strategy, keeping it mostly powered down. It would have retina display as well. Slightly thinner than current cMBP, no ethernet, no optical drive.

I'm just hoping for a 1TB option. My 750 is getting full.

Why not use a NAS or move to the cloud?
Im not just talking about you now but all of you complaining about rMBP not having enough storage for your needs.

I bought a NAS 1½ year ago when i went from a stationary computer over to a laptop, and i just love it.
I can reach it from where ever i am. And so can my friends and family.
Only reason i can think of that can be a drawback to nas is if you have slow internet connection and need a lot of files when your not at home.

But that's not really an issue in Sweden where its almost standard now days to have an internet connection of 100mbit or more.

When at home i move files just slightly slower over the wifi then i would do from disk to disk transferring.

Having a 500gb SSD is really more then enough for me with a NAS with 6tb storage and and 100mbit+ internet connection and a 1gb local lan connection.

It will be released in July, 100% for sure.
Competitors have already annonced their better then retina screen.
HP, Fujitsu, Samsung will release by end of June their 3200 x 1800 pixels laptops. Apple will do the same, can't loose customers by selling outdated crap for 3k
The new mid-end July Macbook pro retina:
-PCIe SSD
-Wi-fi ac
-Haswell and Iris
-3200 x 1800 resolution.
-100-300 dollars price reduction
Who fuc... cares about thunderbot??? It will arrive in 2014 refresh.

I love apple, and I own almost every product, but in laptop market it's a great failure: many decades of mac, the best os, and great products and a market share of 5-11%?????????
Mac=Faillure, money comes from iPhone iPad and AppStore
Apple outrageous prices (45% more margin of profit then competitors) have completely blocked any possible expansion in laptop market and have obbliged customer to use bootcamp or vm to run softwares that have not a mac version cause mac users are only 5-11%.
The software I have to use for work, are only for windows!!!
WAKE UP APPLE!!!!

lol - nailed it right there

Love all the news lately about better performance, battery life, and "power user" features (TABS IN FINDER!!). I'm glad Apple is concentrating on those little things that we use every day.

Now if they would just stop making devices so thin that it offsets the improved battery technology -- then we would REALLY see some battery life improvements!

no optical drive

No. I want apple to put in a blu-ray drive in new mbps.

They recently added "When you insert a blank Blu-ray Disc" in the CDs & DVDs system preferences for mavericks and os x 10.8.4 for when a BD drive is attached.

So if apple are now officially supporting blu-ray we should start seeing them in new computers from apple.

The new mac mini may look as an mini Mac Pro or like an metallic Airport Extreme.

Besides de refreshed rMbp and the new form factor for Mac mini apple don't have anything else to impress me.

OK an iPhone 5S with finger print scanner and scrolling home button would impress me...

A few minutes to start from hibernation? It should take a couple of seconds, and the MacBook Pros don't have spinning hard drives they use all flash storage.

Your comment sounds like it has come from 2003 :p

My 2006 intel mbp also takes a few minutes!

I think you should plan on getting an external Blu-ray drive. THAT'S why the menu item is there.

The one thing you can count on is once they're in stock in your Apple store you'll finally get the facts & be able to try one.

Otherwise, it's all speculation.

I think it is clear that Apple is done with internal optical drives when even the previewed Mac Pro lacks one.

Let's face it, certainly in the laptop world, the key to thinner, smaller and lighter products is what gets left out and you can rest assured that Apple have given considerable thought to the matter. An added bonus for Apple is the reduced cost of goods sold. The.benefit to the majority of users is they don't have to pay for and carry around hardware they don't use and don't want.

Adding native Blu-Ray support to the OS is a welcome addition for those who do use optical drives.
