I really have no clue why people are waiting for a new chipset that will make it like 5% faster! I really hope that they come with some kind of redesign, atleast a magnetic latch. Btw i went to my local apple store and all of the Macbook Pros had a rubber kind of insert on the hinge right below "Mac Book Pro" Is that new or have i just never realized it?

I Think The Big Re-Design Is About To Ship

What I meant to say is Apple has no quelms about waiting for extended periods before upgrades, and then release a mediocre upgrade to round up the suckers even though they already have a fantastic upgrade in store.

My guess is the next upgrade next Monday will be just as it was last year.
I think just the opposite. I Think The Big Re-Design Is About To Ship. Santa Rosa is NOT a big change from the current C2D tech. All the bugs discovered in these first 9 months of MBP Intel experience make now the time for the big change model.

So I bet Monday will introduce a very new different much improved MacBook Pro not a marginal evolutionary model.

I don't care so much about the 5%, but I care a lot about 64-bit. I write a lot of stuff that is much faster with native 64-bit operations.

And for others, myself as well, there's the hope Apple will have found a way to address some of the heat and noise issues with an improved design. Magnetic latch, I couldn't care less.

OK ... here is the scoop ... !

While working on the development of the new iPhone, Apple engineers discovered that they had found the secret of time travel. When they tried it out, they went into the future and came back with a new processor that is 1/22 the thickness of the 65nm merom and brought the specs back with them. The MBPs will not come out with merom chips but with a new Core 5 sextent microprocessor that runs at 533THz...with a FSB of 1655GHz. The new MBPs will be in a new transparent aluminum alloy shell and will only be 1/2" thick. The new graphics system is actual 3d with trusense feel and smell properties. The screen size is adjustable from 11 inches up to 24 inches and it actually folds in quarters and can be carried in your shirt pocket

:D
Lol, if only that evaluates to true.

A couple of questions:

1.) What does everyone mean when they say buy via a campus network? Is this different from going to the Apple Store for Education and selecting your university from the list?

2.) Is there any way to see the hardware discounts ADC offers before purchasing a membership? I would seriously consider joining ADC for the discount if it made it worth it (there is a $200 discount as it is using the Apple Store for Education for my particular university) when the new MBPs come out. But it would need to be at least $100 more of a discount to be worth it. And I would need to know this before buying the ADC membership...

The other benefits would be nice, as well. I have never done any development in a Mac environment, so I wouldn't mind the introduction ADC may offer...

I don't think they would offer that much of a discount even if you're a member. I am sure they are pretty much the same, and if you're thinking of adding the discount on top of your education one, I've never heard of any kind of discount offer used that way. :)

that is an awesome bag. that is what i'm going to carry my new merom macbook pro in.

I reckon one of those STM bags that are on apple's store page are better.

The reason I liked them are because they looked stylish but is still safe for your laptop. :)

Long time lurker, first time poster!

All of you provide interesting insight, spin, & regurgitation! That's why I am here.

I am about to purchase a 15" MBP, that time is totally dependent on the release of the C2D.

I don't want to hijack the discussion but many of you have alot of knowledge and I am looking for both fact & opinion.

1. Please describe the magnetic latch and why all of the hoopla. Is it on any Apple laptops at this time or used on previous models?
2. Gloss screen vs. matte finish. What is your preference & why?
3. With the addition of the C2D, and assuming no other changes, is this a solid "revision" release? Most bugs & issues resolved?
4. If the release is both C2D + overhaul. How much concern is there that you are now buying a Rev. A machine?

Thanks

1. No moving parts, less to break. It is on the Macbook.
2. Matte, no glare easier on the eyes after using for a while, i think the glossy looks cheap
3. Yes
4. Not much, I will still buy.

I hope you are right as well, like I said no HD panel = no deal. I really can't accept the lack of a feature that I take so for granted on Thinkpad for years, it is not even an innovation per se, others have it since the beginning of time!

that's what i believe will happen. With all the problems the macbook pro faced, i dont think apple would just throw in a core 2 duo and say hey we have new macbook pros. I believe that this is going to be a major design change, which is probably why the release is a little off target. It will be worth the wait.

A little point of interest

The uk online store is now showing 5 days shipping for the stock 2.16GHz 15" but if you change a BTO option it changes to 3 days? WTF?! As this is the general trend on this thread I am going to derive a deep meaning from this. Stock is out and defaulted to 5 days, no one thought to update the whole system because it doesn't matter as New MBPs on the way.

Bit weird...but prob means nothing.

Has anyone put together the times? I assume it will be early here in the states. Eastern time is six hours behind German time.

I think someone calculated it was about 8:30am pacific time.

Well, we know Santa Rosa will be coming along around April. That should be a big step up. It would seem to make more sense to do a reasonably large upgrade now, then again in April/May, rather than just a bump now, then a new design in January, and a new motherboard in April/May.

But we will have to wait and see.

Why do you say Santa Rosa will be a big step up ???

generik - I fully understand one of your earlier posts regarding this perception of Santa Rosa.

I need a notebook for University in January(the 4th) and would really like to get a MBP but I won't fork out if there are no core2s in them by them and will have to settle for a MB. :(

I can't imagine they wouldn't have the core 2 duo's in MB's by then. That would be just... stupid. I think you'll be okay as long as you hold out. There's plenty of time between now and then to equip macbooks with C2D.

If you really don't need it until school starts, then wait a week and buy January 9 - SteveNote Tuesday - so you get iLife '07 Included. Use a paper and pen notebook from January 4-9.

Someone else already answered this, but a number of the answers of this type of question must be opinion, so I'll kick my own two cents in :)

Glossy vs Matte is a personal preference thing. I've used both and personally prefer glossy. Brighter, more saturdated display. I mostly use laptops in environments where reflections aren't a problem, so that may have bearing on it -- I'm someone who prefers relatively low ambient light, rarely need to use systems outdoors, etc. Even in brightly lit office environemtns tho', I've not found it to be a huge problem. Having said that, others have.

IMO, the best way is to try both and decide for yourself which you like best.

No-one knows what the C2D models will bring, so no-one can say how solid it will be.

I don't plan to buy one day of launch. I do await reports from those that do with a great deal of interest.
