Well, I ended up buying another 13" base MBP 2016. Still on the initial (3rd, actually) cycle and have been using on battery/Safari for ~5 hours. 2:37 remaining. I'm browsing mainly, not encoding a major motion picture. Seems fine to me.

Returned my first silver base to Amazon because of graphics issues. Walked into Best Buy last night and saw a space grey open box for $1,349. After haggling with the manager, I was able to have him knock an extra 10% off. Good deal I say at $1,214. Nice. I have absolutely zero interest in the touchbar so the base is perfectly fine for me. People can trash the keyboard from afar, but it's so, so good IMO.

so i spoke to apple today, it must of been work experience day as the first person i spoke to was adamant of the following :- 1, no laptop is capable of running for 10 hours and the 10 hours quoted were standby time. i said its quoted by apple its 10 hours and she still insisted.
2, she then got me to look how many cycles by battery had which was 7, and its status which was normal. i was told this was impossible and the figure should be over 1000. she then went away and when she came back said this was actualy normal.

i then got passed to 2nd line support who connected to my machine and had a poke around and found nothing wierd then because i am running 10.12.2 because i thought it would address the situation of battery and they disconnected from my machine and said they cant do any more until i install 10.12.1

i am so annoyed with this machine at the moment and they need to rectify this issue quicktime otherwise its getting returned.

of all my support experience with apple its been exceptional but this incident was just shocking.
Reinstall 10.12.1 and I'll bet your battery is a lot better...

I just don't understand why we still insist on using SD cards for data transfer. Seems dumb. This problem should have been solved by now with wireless technologies. Why do I need to take my camera off the tripod, flip it over and pop out an antiquated piece of plastic to push into a laptop and then import. Why are my photos and videos not just appearing on the dang computer right after they're taken?

I just think there's a better way and manufacturers are not bothering to solve that problem.

Why must I bring along my MacBook Pro when I'm hiking miles and miles? Your solution is very impractical for those that aren't in a studio shooting.

That falls under abused. Ethernet when practical is still better than wifi
RJ-45 connectors break from normal use. The pin wasn't intended to be plugged and unplugged day in and day out. Wi-Fi is far more practical. Plus, the whole point of a notebook is to be mobile, not stationary.

Wrong wrong wrong
The 3lb laptop is the MacBook and the pro machine is a whole half pound heavier. Users who want the lightest buy the MacBook and those wanting power sacrifice a whole 8 ounces in weight.
No way would we see this type of posting of a pro machine with true power use be decried as we see here when use is diminished for the sake of thinness. Apple could have had both as they had before but chose not to go that route and this is the reaction they got.
This is what happens when 1 man rules over design without oversight.
Apple has made mistakes before, let's hope they are not too stubborn/proud to fix it moving forward.

The MacBook is 2lbs. There's a big enough difference between 2 and 3. 3.5 would be even more of a stretch. Apple is using the exact same classes of processor in the MacBook Pro 13 and 15 as they did in the last generation. The newer chips are a bit more efficient, so Apple made the decision to increase portability by making the battery smaller. So have most of their competitors. 3.5lbs is considered heavy for a 13" notebook in 2016.

I feel for you. It's a tough position to be in: Deep down knowing you're wrong, but emotionally not ready to deal with it.
Because that's you. Apple got the MacBook Pro right. People like you complained about the MacBook Air, declaring that "5lbs is the right size" for a 13" notebook.

Using Chrome and expecting good battery life?

youre-going-to-have-a-bad-time.png

These posts crack me up. I've been using Chrome with all of my Macbooks for years and never had a complaint about battery life.

You're running on fumes. Give it up. This macbook pro is a dog. Please just admit it and move on.

Boom goes the dynamite.
No it isn't. You know I'm right. But like most luddites you want to cling to your legacy ports and wish for a notebook that Apple never made. Other than legacy ports, there is NOTHING that the previous models did better. Add a hub, and you have all the functionality and then some.

If anything, Apple wasn't aggressive enough. I'd prefer a 2.5 lb 13" with the Touch Bar, even if it meant using the 15W processors.

They may well have but sd cards are removable media and you usually have multiple cards so that won't solve it. Of course there's 3rd party products but how hard would it have been for Apple to add a USB-C ethernet dongle rather than the mess it is now? I'd say not very.

Simply dropping magsafe was lazy when you see the kickstarter doing fairly neat version, Apple could have made a very neat one.
I've said I'm surprised they didn't make a MagSafe cable, or license one (like they did with the LG monitor).

Looking long-term, Apple sees the world going wireless. They are really pushing the world wireless, as anyone who paid any attention to the April 2015 MacBook rollout would know. They are supporting legacy ports as little as possible, and are largely getting out of the accessory business. Hence only rudimentary hubs (the VGA and HDMI multi-port adapters). Thunderbolt 3 was an Intel decision. You won't see new PCs or Mac with Thunderbolt 2 ports in the future. Apple's adapter is bi-directional (unlike many others).

Battery has been very spotty and I certainly hope Apple responds to these valid concerns.

During both these times I had only Safari, Mail, iMessage, gfxCardStatus and a few others open. Made sure I was only using the iGPU and no TimeMachine backup was running:
  • On one occasion I got close to 9 hours of battery and the MBP was cool throughout.
  • But off late it's only been 4-5 hours and the MBP was warm.
Please observe what's going on in System Information, under Power. On light usage, Amperage should be less than 1000 mA (or rather -1000). When my system magically, without any observable application-based power drain or usage of discrete graphics according to Activity Monitor starts behaviour you described, this number jumps to around 2000 mA. Also, iStat menus indicated to me that "AMD topside" or something similar, strongly pointing towards the discrete GPU, is actually powered up and using about 10 watts (roughly equal to that 1000 mA difference at 12 volts).

To me it seems that at least problems I'm facing, and maybe also you, are caused by buggy power management, most likely a software issue. I'm looking forward for a fix, but this far I haven't figured out what triggers this behaviour of unnecessary power usage.

I'd wish there were more reports on proper software/hardware diagnostics on this thread, because "Tim Cook must go" style ranting (but also "it's a nice machine" apologies without more stringent backing) provides zero improvement on the topic, but lots of unnecessary, idiotic noise.

I was waiting for the new Macbooks to get one for my son, and decided to buy the old model.
The New Macbooks are a joke, Bad design, expensive...A rippoff

Maybe it's because I'd been waiting two years for this redesigned MacBook Pro, but the disappointment following this product announcement seems enormous to me.

Let's see if lessons are learnt. It feels like a tipping point. Either this is where things start to improve, or Apple accelerates downhill.
Complete agree.... Apple only cares about Iphone... Innovation in Apple is dead...
Apple became a Phone company...
All their hardware is outdated...Mac Mini, Mac Pro, the iMac is limited to 16gb ram, Airport discountinued...

It's the first iteration of a brand new MacBook Pro design. Hence, first generation. The 2012 Retina MacBook Pro had similar issues that required both software and firmware updates to fix.

If software and firmware updates are all there needs to be to fix these issues, then that hardly seems like a big deal. Annoying, but not a reason to not buy this laptop. The worst that people would have to do is wait a few months to buy it, not wait for the 2nd gen laptop.

Macbooks get their long power life by being able to shut off the discrete GPU and use the GPU on the processor die when it's not actually needed. Unfortunately, if you have workloads that engage the discrete GPU, you will have to expect that battery life will decrease.

What the energy usage for a given app is, or whether or not it's using the discrete GPU can be found under the energy panel on the activity monitor.

The new MacBook probably can make it into the 8-10 hour range, but, you will have to be avoiding anything that has high energy usage. Especially avoid using anything that needs the discrete GPU.

We bought a 2015 model with, gasp, USB ports and and SD card reader built in. Black Friday sale with zero sales tax and free shipping. B&H Photo.

I think with Apple, it's now best to just wait till Apple gets sued with a class action lawsuit and is forced to fix the defects in their new product, THEN buy it. I might get an iPhone 7S.
