I have the early 2008 MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz with 2 GB Ram. I bought it in November.

What just happened last night (either that or I just noticed last night) was that there is a light blue shaded/striped area starting on the bottom left of the screen, seeming to be about an inch wide and traveling about 2/3 of the way up.

I noticed it when I put in a dvd to watch and it was totally apparent on the black background. And now I can see it on my red background too, although not as apparent. But it's there and really dulls the left bottom corner and part of the way up of my screen with this greyish/blue stripe of a haze or cloud.

It's really not 'horrible' but I wonder if it's a precursor to the whole vertical striping issue or if it's nothing to worry about? Would the control/shift/eject thing help this issue?

Thanks for any info. you may all have.

I don't believe there is a 'precursor' to the issue. You either have it or not. And it is most definitely hardware related issue - though possibly they can mitigate the issue in software (by making the LED driver always turn on at full, for example). Apple replaced my screen as soon as I said I had this issue.

Why don't you try the control shift eject? All that does it put the display to sleep anyway.

Alas, I have also become the victim of this graphics issue.
I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.5 GHz, 4GB RAM (early 2008).
The problem occurs only when I'm on battery power and move my mouse/ trackpad just after the display is dimmed. I was very hapy when I read in this post how to (temporarily) resolve the issue.

Immediately I emailed by :apple: premium reselled (switchshops.be).
They said they will check the display. Don't really expect them to find anything (as their knowledge appears to be very limited), but who knows...
It's still within the 2 years warranty and 3 years "SwitchCare" (which by the way covers more than AppleCare).

Hope that this problem will be solved soon.

Cheers,

Hi guys,

My macbook pro has the dreaded vertical striping issue. In addition, I also have a high-pitched sound. It is an LED LG screen, santa rosa 2.2 ghz processor.

Anyway, would replacing the screen fix my issues? I know that some people think that it is a system board issue or a gpu issue, but when i connect to an external monitor, I get no problems.

It's out of warranty, so I want to have some reasonably knowledgeable people chime in on whether fixing the screen is going to be a permanent solution.

Sorry for bringing this old thread up, but I just experienced the vertical striping for the 1st time in almost 3 years since I've had my early 2008 MacBook Pro.

I fixed the issue by simply pressing CTRL + Shift + Eject buttons, but still... It bothers that it should have happened in the first place. I thought Apple fixed this long ago??

Should I be concerned? (We all know about the infamous Geforce GPUs that these early 2008 MBPs have...)

Ah ha! It also happened to me recently and hasn't happened in years also. It happened after a recent update but only the once. Crazy how it's a software issue that looks like a hardware failure huh?

So it's 100% a software issue? If so, then I'm not really concerned about it...
