There's been a 24" professional grade ($600+) panel out for a couple years now used by NEC among others. It has a 6ms refresh rate opposed to 14ms in the older 23" panel, 500 cd/m2 brightness opposed to 400, and a 1000:1 contrast ratio compared to 700:1 in the obsolete panel Apple still uses.

does apple really make there own panels? they should learn from Microsoft do a little research and just have the best company do it for you.

No, they use a third party. I believe they actually do this for all their parts - e.g. Asus for the motherboards (er I mean "logic boards") etc. I think it's LG for the display panels? They should definitely change manufacturer though. Apple may not be directly responsible for the crappy panels, but they're responsible for picking the manufacturer in the first place.

i used to think the display wasnt that important till i was at my lawyers house and he had the largest display i ever saw at the time and he said something to the effect that you use the display and your chair at your computer more than anything else and not to skimp on them.

Exactly my view :) Same with keyboards and mice. And the interface. And the stuff powering it. I guess just not skimping on any of it is pretty wise as a heavy user, but things like the display and the seating are certainly of high importance.

My 5 day old Macbook Pro did this when I opened it up this AM. I closed the lid and opened it back up and all was better.

Hopefully this is just a driver issue and not a hardware problem.

Another reason why I don't buy any displays from Apple, they make the worst in the industry.. Walmart sell better displays than Apple...

Thanks Apple for your high quality product....
IMO, the 24" iMac has the most beautiful display I have seen for a long time, if not ever. I love the glossy display. The brightness and contrast aahhh *duels*

Now it just needs to be LED'd

i agree if you buy the highest of the line imac they give you a good display.

but you can't be serious about it being led driven especially seeing how well they have implemented it in this particular thread

I have 2 HP laptops, 1 Dell, and a 1 month old Macbook Pro 15" and only one of the 3 have a vertical line problem. YUP it's the new Macbook Pro, a little disgusting when I finally got talked into switching, I love the Mac but HATE this screen problem. When I get home in a few weeks I will take it in and see if they can fix the problem.
I have turned off the lighted keyboard, opened and closed many times, shut-down and rebooted. Shutting down and rebooting is the only thing that removes the bothersome lines.

Hi,

I bought the extended Apple Care plan the other day because of this problem. Their support is very good over the phone I have to say. The techie lady listened to my vertical striping issue problem and had me do a hard reset (some funky key compination with the battery removed..) She said that it if happened again, I should send it in for repair. Well, it happened again today. Control, Shift, Eject resets the screen and solves the problem most of the time. Perhaps you have to do it a few times but this is by far the quickest way to fix the issue. Also... sometimes I swear if the MBP is a little cold, you just have to wait for it to warm up before this problem will go away.

I'm not sure I'll get the thing 'fixed'. I can't be without it at the moment.

it didn't take my mbp 24 hours before the stripes showed up. After i closed the lid and opened it a "dirty area" at the bottom of the screen appeared. i got it yesterday. I'm really not happy since i'm a broke college student that spent all of his money on this computer and i can't afford to get apple care right now. i use this for design/photo work. also there is a "dirty area" at the bottom of the screen. I'm going to go throw up now.........

and i've almost lost all faith in apple.....

I'm on my 3rd replacement MBP and i just got the vertical striping issue for the first time today. It disappeared when i closed and opened the lid, but i have zero faith in this computer living a long healthy life. The number of problems i've encountered in these first weeks is simply pathetic.

I have had my macbook pro for about 3 weeks and i just got my first vertical lines today and i was wondering, does the apple store just replace your laptop or try to fix it? cause i was hoping i could take it in once they update the macbook pros and get a new one

Amen to that. I bought such about a year ago (may be a few inches smaller to be honest) and I love using it every day

Big, Beautiful, and Stable :apple::apple::apple:

mine did the same thing

macbook pro newest version, after having the machine for 2 months or maybe a little longer it happened 2 times in a matter of 2 weeks then it hasnt happened since. It happened when i would open the lid after it had been closed (while still on) for a while say .. after coming home after work ... All i did to fix it is close the screen and reopen it and it went away.. its been 2 months or so now since it happened last

I will say though that the MBP that i bought 2 years ago is still running strong but is actually falling apart physically. I could lift up the actual keyboard if I wanted to because there is now a seperation between the keyboard and the side of the MBP

Still, I love using it and want to get everything out of it that I can!

Any word on this issue? I just bought a new MBP Sunday, and last night the problem came up for me. It was dark, kb backlight on, backlight on screen set low, and using photobooth. After taking a few pictures I noticed the stripes after the screen returned to normal brightness from the 'flash' feature of photobooth. I've tried but can't reproduce the issue... I don't know if I should return it for a replacement, get my money back, or just keep it.

I hesitate to return it because I'm scared of having other issues with the new one, pixel anomalies, fan noise, or some other issue and then having this issue pop up on top of it. It's horrible to have flaws like this in a $2000 machine, but should I just consider myself lucky that this is the only issue and keep it? Has it been determined if it's hardware of software issue yet?

So my 4 month old 15" LED Penryn did the vertical bar thing on me and I nearly stopped breathing! Only a reboot resolved it. 30mins later after the reboot I woke it from sleep and guess what? The black screen syndrome - yeeha. Both happend before I read these posts. Right so we're still in the dark about what is causing this?

Good luck with with those who do have it, good luck for those who havent experienced it yet.

Im starting to be believe Apple *may* have some call quality and or poor hardware vendor relations

1st Gen Dual 1.8 G5 Audio click issue - Applecare changed Powersupply didnt help - unresolved

7x 24" iMac Alu with varying display issues - yellow gradients etc - still unresolved with trying different batches etc Under Applecare (and yes I have seen acceptable ones so I know there out there, I just cant get one)

and now my 15" LED Penryn Macbook Pro is playing up

Our iMac G3 500 still runs great 7 years on, cant say that about our G5 and Intels

How easy is it to get a replacement instore with photos of the problem but it not showing up when ou talk to he genius?

It happens so intermittently, I got some pics of it last night with the about this mac showing. Bought a week ago.

I have had mine since early July I believe and just got my first striping today. It cleared when I held Control-Shift-Eject but I'm very upset by this. I thought I managed to avoid the problem. I'm going to run to my Apple store but I don't know that it will do any good...:(

Edit: I'm going to gauge how many times it does it and if it persists I will bring it then since it has only happened once thus far and Apple hasn't really done much to fix it definitely.

I've had my 15" MBP for about 2 and a half months; it just did this yesterday for the first time. :(

It took six months for mine to do it. I bought my Penryn MBP the day it was announced. It has only exhibited the stripes one time, but it did do it, just a week ago.

Not quite the Full-On Blue Sripes, but...

I have the early 2008 MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz with 2 GB Ram. I bought it in November.

What just happened last night (either that or I just noticed last night) was that there is a light blue shaded/striped area starting on the bottom left of the screen, seeming to be about an inch wide and traveling about 2/3 of the way up.

I noticed it when I put in a dvd to watch and it was totally apparent on the black background. And now I can see it on my red background too, although not as apparent. But it's there and really dulls the left bottom corner and part of the way up of my screen with this greyish/blue stripe of a haze or cloud.

It's really not 'horrible' but I wonder if it's a precursor to the whole vertical striping issue or if it's nothing to worry about? Would the control/shift/eject thing help this issue?

Thanks for any info. you may all have.
