It was long rumored that Apple would release the first MacBook Pro models with OLED displays next year, but that timeframe is a little less certain now.

In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said he expects the MacBook Pro to gain an OLED display "between the end of 2026 and early 2027."

Compared to current MacBook Pro models with LCD screens, benefits of OLED technology could include increased brightness (if the MacBook Pro gets an Ultra Retina XDR display with tandem OLED technology, like the latest iPad Pro), higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, improved power efficiency for longer battery life, and more.

Gurman was previously more firm about a 2026 launch, which he still thinks might happen, but he now thinks early 2027 is a possibility too.

In a wide-ranging report about future Apple devices last month, Gurman said that Apple was considering pushing back the release of the next MacBook Pro models with the M5 series of chips until 2026, which is likely why he is now mentioning that the subsequent MacBook Pro models with OLED displays might be slightly pushed back too.

On the other hand, there is precedent for the MacBook Pro being updated twice in a year. Apple released models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in January 2023, followed by models with M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips in October 2023. So maybe we get the M5 generation in January 2026, and the M6 generation in October 2026.

In any case, we recommend skipping the next-generation MacBook Pro models with the M5 series of chips if you can wait, as the subsequent models with the M6 series of chips are expected to feature more significant changes, including an OLED display, a thinner design, and a smaller notch. Just know that wait might stretch into early 2027.

Well, or maybe even longer … thing is, a computer is a tool, buy what you need to get the job done, replace it when it can’t do the job anymore … if you wait for the next technology - you’ll wait forever.

I bought the OLED M4 iPad Pro last summer and use it all the time:

The power efficiency improvements on the OLED display are incredible

Hopefully Apple eventually incorporates in OLED display into the MacBook Air as well

I think that Apple should try to update the MacBook Pro models this autumn with SOC that increase the memory bandwidth and thus, are better in running AI models locally on the unified memory. For the same reason I am expecting them to up the max memory to 256 GB -- Well, I have a dream!

Delays. That's pretty much all we ever hear for rumored products that have never had a release date. 🙄

I love my M4 Air. It will do will for years.
This! Delays and more delays. Steve would never had let this happen. No wonder there's a lot of people that are leaving the Apple ecosystem, there's no more innovation since Tim's taken over, as the first part of that was still Steve's legacy.

Does this mean Apple’s market share is declining a lot? Do you have data to back up your claims?

I seriously doubt increased brightness would be a benefit over LCD, especially if the MBP are also going to be slimmer and lighter. OLED panels cannot reach the sustained brightness of backlit LCD/LED panels. That is one of the reasons why MICRO LED panels are the holy grail for videophiles. Because MICRO LED offers the same infinite contrast as OLED but without the brightness limitations.

Same with OLED iPhones. They generally cannot produce the same consistent brightness as the older LCD iPhones.

Probably related to false advertising for AI. They'll be in deep doo doo if they release a new model before the promised M4 AI features are released.

Gurman rumors that Apple has been working on something and then Gurman says it is delayed. Nothing was ever announced and the only imaginary timeline is the one Gurman gave you. This is how he gets people to read his garbage. Don’t let yourself think that anything Gurman says is true until maybe the week before a release. He’s wrong constantly and just says things are delayed rather than issuing retractions like a real journalist.

Lol it's like the iPhone ultra

How thin will an oled display be? Because it could be too thin given it also acts as the lever to open the computer.

Maybe they might utilise this thiness to pack more bat or something else behind the screen?

Maybe Tim Apple will even bring back the glowing apple. Have it the right(tm) way when the lid is closed but have it rotate 180 when open. Some kind of uber matrix display. Maybe even turn it into your own tamogotchi animal.

Delays on a product Apple hasnt even announced… the majority of people dont read Macrumors, nobody is leaving the apple ecosystem because a rumored upgrade for nearly 18 months from now may now be rumored to be 24 months from now

Fine by me. My m3 pro is still an amazing piece of equipment and should hold way beyond 2027

Recently I was thinking about replacing my M1 Air with an M5 Pro, however after seeing the debacle of the Mac port of Cyberpunk (which shows that Macs are graphically extremely underpowered) and anticipating that Apple will spread the effects of the tariffs to the rest of the world, I will redirect my future purchase to a barebone PC that will serve as my gaming and sim-ing machine (and fun pass time project)
