13' nTB MBP here.

I can definitely feel something "sliding" inside when tilting left and right.

Although I feel absolutely nothing when the lid is shut. It seems to come from the display hinge mechanism.

It seem to be by design.

I don't care. I will sleep very very well tonight.

I'm really sorry, but I have to disagree. I have confirmation from the Genius Bar that this is happening inside the display - also, if you "pinch" the display from the front and back while moving the laptop left-to-right the noise/movement disappears completely. So it's definitely the display.

I think you are right. I also didn't have this noise earlier. Any idea how we can fix this? You don't have to shake it to hear it, the noise is triggered with normal usage.

Hard to tell from a video, but it kind of sounded like the hinge where the display connects to the body. Can't be sure though.

I just tested my rMBP 2015 13 inch and it makes a noise when the lid is open and i shake it. Lol. Never noticed before.

when it gets warm my 15" (2016) is making the noise if I tilt it left and right.
when it is cold however, there isn't any noise at all.
besides that my touch id/power button is fairly loose.

At this point, I'm fairly certain anyone claiming they don't have it is simply in denial

I can tell you categorically that my 15" does not do this. I decided to try it after reading that other ridiculous thread where the guy has been shaking or banging on every MBP within spitting distance. It was kind of like when you watch a movie where people have to swim under water and you try to see if you can hold your breath that long.

I don't intend to shake it again, but was relieved there was no noise.

If it's true that it'll eventually happen, I guess I'll keep an eye on it to see if it's something I can observe through natural, normal use of the machine.

..this issue is also apparent on the 12" MacBook
It's happening on my 12" Macbook AFTER Apple replaced the display (because it got loose).
the machine was 12 months old and DID NOT make any noise before the display was replaced.

I don't understand why you want to pretend it happens on all these machines and why you want to think it's normal and ignore it.
It's not normal and it's not acceptable.

Here is my thread with video:

There's always some kind of manufacturing defect yet they still cost a mint. I never understood that.

It's the basic technology. You have a light that generates photons to backlight the screen. There are diffuser and other panels between the light and the screen to minimize bright and dark spots on the display. These layers get warmed by the light and expand (and then contract) so you cannot have super tight fit.

In the future, I suspect all displays will go to OLED technology. At that time there will be no back lighting needed since the pixels lite themselves, thus no need to backlights and a diffuser panel that can rattle, so no rattle!

Of course, the OLED will let them make the display thinners, so maybe the tops start to flex and the screens crack easier. And then there is power consumption...

The bottom line is that all solutions are a series of trade-offs.

Demo in video seems like its the trackpad. The screen noise is a clicking? I think. But the clunk this machine also gets and only happens when a quick movement brings it side to side, if you want to try it you have to move the machine left to right quickly as well, happens when picking machine up a fair amount.
