Yikes! Sounds like a lot of MBP's out there with problems waking up from sleep mode. Makes me nervous for the new mbp I have on the way. I just sent back a refurb 2.4 sr mbp for the same reason. Straight out of the box, I would have to restart it after sleep mode 50% of the time. It is either the RAM or a kernal panic issue... They declared my machine DOA and I was allowed to send it back for a new penryn machine. So annoying though, I feel your pain.

Recently, after upgrading to Leopard, I've the same issue of my MacBook Pro can't wake up from sleep. However, I've remove the widget, iStats and since then the issue have been solved.

i've sent back two macbooks, with this issue....

second time i've asked (and got) a full refund.....

i'm very much in doubt if i should buy a new MBP or just keep on working on my always waking up 1.25ghz G4 spotted-display powerbook....

UPDATE: Removing iStat Pro and changing the hibernation mode didn't help. I just had to restart the computer. I forgot to mention before that a hardware test came back clean. Although, since so many people are having this issue it seems to be software. I'm really frustrated that I have to do this numerous times a day. Apple should really fix the problems with their established machines before they keep releasing new computers. Does anybody have any ideas other than reinstalling OS X, or committing surgery?

P.S. This is my second Macbook Pro. The replaced my original (that was a refurb) because straight out of the box it would have kernel panics for no reason and programs would constantly quit unexpectedly. They had to replace my logic board twice and my RAM before they realized maybe they should just give me a new one. For someone who just made the switch from PC with this machine, they aren't doing a good job of proving to me to stay with them.

I turn off airport before I sleep my machine (close the lid). It's been working. But yeah... I'm not impressed apple. This machine should not have this issue.

I've been having this exact same issue, but I've had it get even worse for a couple instances. The MacBook Pro was put to sleep with a full battery, I tried to wake it up an hour later only to find that it was very hot to the touch at 180F (checked with several programs) and the battery was depleted to 20% and it shut down on it's own. It happened again yesterday where it was very hot to the touch, shut down (on it's own again), and batter significantly depleted.

I'm really not very impressed with Apple right now, first my original MacBook Pro has a lot of serious issues, then my replacement has a lot of serious issues. This is getting rather ridiculous, as I have a total of 9 serious issues.

I have this problem as well...no istat pro or anything...

Yesterday I tried plugging in an external monitor when it was the macbook was in its black screen state. After pressing the screen mirroring button on the keyboard I got my LCD back on! I then disconnected the external monitor and was back in business.

I think this indicates a serious issue Apple needs to deal with. I have greatly alleviated this problem previously by resetting the power management chip following apples advice in a recent bulletin.( there is a link to that elsewhere in the forum, sorry.)

Still the problem persists but this seems to be a workaround. It may even work without another monitor and with the adapter alone, but I cant confirm that.

I guess I might as well reinstall OS X and not install the keyboard or graphics update, since they've been hinted at being a cause. Until of course, apple fixes the problem. I've restarted twice today so far. It's ridiculous. How do people know that apple is doing something? Have they read it somewhere, or just spoken to someone? I want to read something posted by apple that they know of and are working on the issue.

I have this problem too, and it seems like it's getting worse. Yesterday I also had this problem, and this morning too! It's very frustrating, because my four-year old PB never had this issue, yet my relatively new MBP does. I was hoping that the keyboard software update would fix things, but it clearly hasn't, and I'm relieved that I'm the only one with this problem. Sometimes it wakes up on its own after a while; today I had to reboot.

Is iStat (Pro) really partly the culprit behind this?

Yes it is. As soon as I removed it, my MBP started waking normally again. I even turned my bluetooth mouse back on... it certainly seems to have been the issue with mine anyway.

Not necessarily. I dumped iStat, changed my Safesleep mode, stopped wireless before sleep... still hasn't fixed it.

Next I'll have to roll back my graphics update...

ugh.

Apple, you lose.

Yeah, removing iStat didn't fix it for me. I don't use any bluetooth devices and my bluetooth is always off so that's not it for me. Some people says it's when connecting to their airport. Well, disconnecting didn't fix that for me either. Changing my sleep mode didn't work. Manually putting it to sleep didn't work. Disconnecting everything but the power cord didn't work. Lots of people are finding that different things work for them. Also, some people are having this problem under slightly different circumstances. Some people have it only when they have another monitor attached, etc. Nor is that the case for me.

Have you attemped rolling back the latest 10.5.2 graphics updates?

I'm just doing a little more backing up right now and I'm going to reinstall os x, without installing the graphics update. The main thing I hate to do is reinstall all the drivers for my printer and wacom etc, so I'm putting those on my external too.

I hope you post the results... this is so lame.

I've also been using the program DeepSleep. It basically saves the Ram contents and the shuts the computer down. (I think). It takes longer to restart, but less time than a full reboot.

graphics update the culprit?

Also... seems apple knows there is an issue...

Apple confirms "closed-lid" issue is a known bug

Wednesday, February 20th

Apple has confirmed as a known issue a problem in which external displays do not come on at all (or come on briefly after which the system goes back to sleep) while the notebook's lid is closed and will not wake up when keys on an external keyboard or buttons on an external mouse are pressed. The problem materialized for a number of users who have applied the recent Mac OS X 10.5.2 and Leopard Graphics 1.0 updates.

This issue could also manifest as disabling of certain external displays, missing display resolutions and more.

Typical reports of the problem:

* "When I wake my MacBook Pro in closed-lid mode it shows the desktop picture on the external screen and then goes right back to sleep. If I then wake it again, the same thing will happen all over again."
* "Prior to updating, I had no problem. I would routinely connect the Cinema display to my MacBook Pro while the MBP was asleep. I would wake it by touching a key on the attached keyboard. As expected, the Cinema display would fire up, the display in the MBP would turn off, and the computer would stay on. Now, when I try to do this, the MBP wakes up briefly, the Cinema display comes on, but then the MBP goes back to sleep. The problem started right after I installed 10.5.2."
* "Since installing the latest update I'm also experiencing wake from sleep problems on my dual 1.0 ghz MDD Mac with a gForce Ti video card. We have 2 monitors hooked up to it. One an Apple display with ADC connection and one generic CRT. Often we'll work with the CRT off and we've found if we turn on the CRT after the wake from sleep problem the CRT is now the only functional display and the menu bar has migrated there."

Apple is now sending the following reply to customers reporting this problem:

"After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering."

Temporary fix (as noted earlier today) Since this problem generally occurs on notebooks with external displays, one workaround involves the following: Press the power button on your Mac (with external display connected) then immediately shut the lid. Your Mac will continue booting and the external display should show the proper resolutions.

That workaround is fine for booting up with an external display, but I don't have an external display, and my MBP boots fine. It just doesn't wake up properly - like everyone else in this thread - wakes to black screen on the built in LCD... hopefully whatever they come up with will fix the problem regardless of the display config.
FRUSTRATING.

Well I just reinstalled Leopard. Unfortunately all the system updates are automatically in a big package, so if I don't want to install the graphics update I have to download them all manually from the apple site.

Wellllll... I'm having some issues connecting to my external hard drive and also ejecting disk images from the desktop. I suppose that's not much to worry about with a raw version of Leopard. I haven't done any of the system updates yet. However, no problems with waking it from sleep!!!! YAY!!!! Cos that was damn annoying. :D Hopefully I haven't just jinxed myself.

having same problem has probably happened 50 times to me as I shut my MBP all of the time, I just disabled "network" in iStat Pro, let's hope that helps! Post a fix here when they get one, extremely annoying, I wonder if apple'd give me one of the new 2.4 GHz MBP? :D

I have found that I can use the program DeepSleep to ensure a re-awakening.

Not a good fix. But functional a bit.

Same problem

I started getting this problem after the 10.5.2 update (and graphics update 1.0, and keyboard update). Randomly, the machine never seems to wake up from sleep. Sometimes I will get a brief login window, but it never lasts long enough to complete my password...then black.

Sometimes opening and closing the lid fixes it; other times I have to hard reboot. Once it even locked my WD MyBook Studio in sleep mode causing me to power it off too.

I do not have an external display nor am I running iStat.

Bummer, my MBP 2.4 Santa Rosa has been perfect up until this.

disabled safesleep - nicely speeds up sleeping and waking, but hasn't fixed the wake to black screen. I think I have narrowed the occurrence down to a specific instance - if anything causes the MBP to wake up while the lid is closed, (usually usb activity - though opening and re-closing the lid before it is fully awake does the same thing) then it seems to hang in the wake up process - it's not asleep (indicator light is out), but not fully awake (screen is black). If I move the mouse while the lid is closed, the indicator light goes out and the apple logo lights up - evidence of it waking up, so then I open the screen and for a fleeting second I see the login / password screen - just before black. If I don't open it right away, it appears to go back to sleep mode, so then I open the lid and still - black screen. Interestingly, it is a dark black screen - powered on but black - not the greenish tinted black you see when the power is off. F2 has no effect, and no amount of waiting or keypressing gets past it - have to hard re-boot. Basically, it seems that a closed MBP has to be woke up only by opening the lid - and it cannot be disturbed while doing so. If it is asleep with the lid already open, any normal waking action is fine. Kinda frustrating. APPLE? LISTENING? NEW UPDATE TO FIX THIS?? (especially since it seems their last update caused it!!)
(note - I am going to try disabling the password on wake - see if that has any effect - EDIT - no effect.)

Exactly what I'm experiencing. I'd love to keep the MacBook open when I run to the bathroom, but my cat would rip all the keys off the keyboard. :(
