Hi there!

I have the strong feeling that the (amount of) memory might be the problem.
Please tell me if you see any similarities or differences in your setup.

1) Problem description
----------------------
Does not always wake up from sleep. In about 30% of all tries the screen goes on, but only shows black. The optical drive does not generate noise as it does before correct sleep resumes. The only help is resetting the computer by pressing the power button several seconds. The problem cannot be cured by removing iStat Pro, resetting battery components, switching sleep mode or doing other voodoo described in this thread. I see no relation in terms of "time spent in sleep mode", temperature, programs running, time of day, ...

2) Hardware
------------
Most recent Macbook (introduced a few weeks ago) with 45nm processor. This series is capable of using 4 GByte of memory (one can configure that much in the Apple store), whereas some older Macbooks only can use about 3,2 GByte when inserting 4 GByte.

3) Memory
---------
No problem (so far) with 2x 512 MByte I got from Apple.
No problem (so far) with 1x 2048 MByte (details below).
Problem as described above with 2x 2048 MByte (details below).
The 2048 MByte memory is Corsair Valueselect PC5300, CL5, "256 x 64". I count 8 chips on each side.

Please tell me what kind of memory modules you use. Perhaps the number of chips, doublesidedness or something alike causes the problem.

PS: Please excuse me to post here although I only have a Macbook. I guess the problem is caused by the same thing in both Macbook and Macbook Pro.

Thanks,
Carsten

what year is your macbook?
as most people here have macbook pros within in the last 2 years im guessing. ours come with 2 x 1 gb.

i agree with the first point
i have not done anything like that

After several days with 1 and 2 GByte RAM and _no_ problems I installed 4 GByte today and now have my first wakeup-problem. This time the optical drive made a noise, though.

I was having this problem for a week now but I think I got it fixed now.

In the system preferences, I noticed 'Start Screen Saver' time is set longer than 'Put the display(s) to sleep....' so I changed the screen saver time to be shorter than 'Put the display(s) to sleep' so hopefully, this sleep problem is fixed.

I have just tested it (only a couple of mins sleep) and it seemed to work. See how it goes on.

Mine is 2.2 Ghz SR laptop with 4 GB RAM.

It has worked!

I have left mine in sleep mode for much longer time, both times with opened and closed lid. So the problem must have caused by the length of time sets longer than the time to put the display to sleep.

BIG UPDATE NEWS

so apple contacted me back after complaining about my esata expresscard not working, i asked them also about the screen issue.

IT IS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM AND WILL AND IS BEING ADDRESSED WITH AN UPDATE.

thats all i got, i was actually calling and being called by people's personal lines, it was  compared to other times that i have contacted other technical support, and speaking to durka durka no speak english

well its doesn't solve it but at least their doing something

I certainly hope Apple is working on this. I have a SR MacBook Pro (base configuration) running 10.5.2 and all the updates. No iStat and using sleep mode 0. It doesn't matter if everything or nothing is connected to the computer. It also seems to get worse if I sleep it overnight of for more than a couple of hours.

The computer will wake up and be running but the screen shows nothing. I have since disabled "require a password to wake this computer from sleep" so I can just hit the power button and return to shut the computer down if I need to.

I haven't purchased AppleCare yet but the computer more than three months old so I can't use the very generous 90 days of phone support. I guess when school ends for the semester I will head over to an Apple store if it hasn't been fixed.

This really has me frustrated that such a basic function of a computer is giving everyone so much trouble.

Software problem... Leopard is OSX Vista?

So plenty of people are saying that apple knows about the issue and is working on a software update - but the last two times I've applied updates I've ended up with more problems than before. First time was this screen/sleep issue which seems to be centered on what display the MBP thinks is attached and something to do with the lid opening / closing. The other issue was I think a security update that I just recently applied, and now everytime I boot up I get 2 or 3 different messages having to do with allowing certain applications to accept incoming connections. If I select no, then my internet and mail doesn't work. So I pick yes... it's something like configd, mdnsresponder and one other one. I'm also getting more and more freeze ups lately. I am SERIOUSLY thinking of going back to Tiger. This is nuts. It's a software problem alright - and I am starting to think that Leopard is as bad as MS's Vista. Yikes

The only thing that has made ANY improvement to the sleep issue was the lidwake = 0 command, and though it has mad a big improvement for me, it has not been 100%. USB activity will still screw it up. And now I have the extra boot-up messages........ it just goes on and on.

Has anyone tried my solution which fixed my problem?

You have a warning note under the slider:
screensaver1.gif

Slide the time to the minimum and the warning disappeared.
screensaver2.gif

This actually fixed my Macbook Pro's sleep problem! Now, I don't know if it's going to fix yours so try this out.

that really doesn't do anything substantial, as when the display turns off the screensaver turns off, so if its off to begin with it will not turn on.

as stated, there is no fix.
we are all fed. :D

Exactly, that was what caused the 'problem', I think it's a bug in my Macbook Pro.

Macbook Pro was having sleep problem for days until I changed the slider!

This is not a constant fix but you can do this from time to time (e.g. make a script that is executed once every month or so) until there's an official fix. Delete these 3 files from your system:

Code:
sudo rm /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
sudo rm /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
sudo rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

Don't forget you have to have root priviledge to do this. After that do a restart. OSX will automatically recreate these files so you cannot do any damage to your system. For me this fixed my problems with my MBP not waking from sleep.

75 fixes in 10.5.3

i wish they would let us know what is going to get fixed.
this better be in 10.5.3 or else i am complaining a lot more about this and defiantly being more affirmative

also hopefully this fixes my express card issues

Apple Seeds First Mac OS X 10.5.3 (9d10) Version

Apple issued the first Mac OS X 10.5.3 seed (9d10) to developers yesterday. The latest update to Apple's Mac OS X Leopard addresses dozens of outstanding issues.

Fixes range from Dashboard, Parental Controls, iCal Synchronization, memory leaks and stability issues. All in all, 75 distinct bug fixes are listed in the accompanying seed notes.

A few known issues remain, and Apple typically seeds a number of developer builds for testing before releasing the final update to customers. While these point releases generally provide bug and stability fixes only, the 10.5.2 seed also addressed some user interface complaints. The current version of Mac OS X (10.5.2) was released in February 2008.

Check this article out:

Apple fixes Mac Pro sleep issue, but won’t admit it.
http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/business/appleaday/blog/2008/03/apple_fixes_mac_pro_sleep_issu.html

This author claims the last update fixed the sleep problem but Apple won't admit it.

Checked software updates but there wasn't anything new for my Macbook Pro except a Digital Camera thingy and an update for Time Machine and Airport. Anybody know what the Author was talking about?

ya i heard about the mac pros having an issue when letting it sleep during something, didn't read the article but you know the mac pro is different from the macbook pro right?

i do not think anyone is more pissed than me right now in the past 7 days (work days) my computer has not woken up from sleep 15 times.

and it happened 5 min before one of my presentations.

i am going to the apple store when i can.
i am soo pissed

two times today already
1st i was able to show the screen 10min later but the mouse was jerky
2nd time nothing had to shut her off.

this is mother f&^%^ing pissing me off, i want windows.

I was desperately hoping the issue was the same. No luck, eh?

nope i spent an hour at the genius bar trying to get my computer to freeze or not wake (i have two issues) couldn't make it do it.

then when i got home at around 12 i wanted to just cheak the space and my email and bam 5 minutes it freezes, restarts bam freezes then it was ok.

so annoying.
all my friends who have windows are like, wow thats a nice paper weight you have their, want to borrow my xp/vista cd and make your expensive paper weight a machine

i only get black screens when its not connected to anything

Yeah, I'm not saying this is the root cause, but (at least for me) it induces the problem 100% of the time. So at least you can convince the genius bar you aren't crazy and theoretically we have a way to test potential fixes that doesn't take days of waiting.

will try this tomorrow when i go back as i do not have a bluetooth keyboard

my wired keyboard turns off when i close the lid so...

does this happen on macbooks?
