Forgive my ignorance, but do you HAVE to have it sleep? I mean, cant you just turn the Sleep option OFF? Windows has a 'Hibernation" feature that I dont enable. I dont have my MBP yet, picking it up on the 25th..so be gentle :)

Generally, I close every program that don't usually start up from a fresh boot-up before I put the laptop to sleep. I think external devices causes this issue more often than not.

Anyway, I would highly suggest trying to close every application running before putting it to sleep. If that still doesn't help, then you should try to run every program one at a time and put it to sleep. At least the third party softwares. Basically, you run it, then you close the program and then put the laptop to sleep. You keep doing this until you find a problem. If you do find a problem, then it could be that program is causing a memory leak. From what I remember reading, high memory activity can cause the Mac from waking up.

I hope this helps in some way.

There are some apps you can download, but without that, there's no option not to make it slep when you close it. But I like to put mine to sleep to save its hard drive/display.

Solved my problem

Went to see my folks for the weekend. Didn't bring any USB devices. Never had any problems waking my MBP from sleep. Aha!

Seems when I have my USB mouse connected that's when my MBP wakes up with the blank screen. If I use any USB devices I make sure to disconnect them before I put my MBP to sleep. As an added precaution I initiate sleep from the menu before closing the lid.

Hope this helps someone. Hope that update comes soon.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can give my workaround a try: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/464849/

I'm trying to figure out enough xcode to come up with a cleaner solution.

My Powerbook G4 1.3ghz has always had this (or very similar) problem. It often happens and always overnight. If I semi-close the computer (not clicking it shut but leaving it slightly ajar), when I return to it in the morning it will often (but not always) be "frozen" in sleep with a black screen. I have to then reboot via the power button to get it going again. Took a while to realize that the semi-closed state was a common denominator here.
Seems odd that people are describing something somewhat similar with the Macbook Pros as new problem, when I can pretty easily duplicate more or less the same thing with my old Powerbook.

MBP doesn't play nice with externals!

I have the same experiance. As long as there are no external devices... it plays nice with itself. Try to make it play with a USB mouse... trouble is close at hand. Grrr.

Screen Saver stuck in blackout mode?

Also I noticed that when the MBP does that wake/sleep thing with the lid closed, there's a curious entry in the system.log that isn't there on a normal sleep/wake:
ScreenSaverEngine[453] Screen saver is running in blackout mode.
That sure sounds interesting.

Quote is from another thread... but that log entry makes sense with what we're seeing, and might indicate why some have had success by adjusting their screensaver and sleep times in system pref.
I haven't checked my own system log - but when I get some more time - I think I'll do that. See just what is going on under that dark screen! ;)

I think your semi-closed lid was probably confusing your PB in the same way that USB activity or other interferences are confusing the MBPs. Leopard (10.5.2 in particular) also seems to have something to do with several very frustrating gremilns being discussed right now - this being only one of them.

My old Powerbook had the same sleep problem that was mentioned here. I read somewhere an easy fix:

1. When you put the computer to sleep, do so by way of the finder (i.e. don't just close the lid).

2. When the screen goes dark, wait until the sleep light starts pulsating before you actually close the lid. Sometimes it takes awhile before it really shuts down. I've noticed if you close the lid during that time, it instantly shuts down (I don't know what the processor is doing but closing the lid before it's finished making its bed seems to annoy it).

3. And for some reason, this seems to be an important one. Always wake the computer up in the exact same configuration it was in when it went to sleep, i.e. if you put it to sleep with the power cord attached, make sure the cord is attached when you wake it up (or vice versa). And the same goes with any cables. As a rule, I detach everything before putting it to sleep.

Don't know if this will help with the MacBook Pro.

Two weeks and counting

It's been over two weeks since I figured out how to avoid the sleep problem on my MBP. As long as there is no external devices attached when I put the laptop to sleep from the menu I have no problem then closing the lid and waking the MBP up later, even over night.

Love to know what percentage of Mac laptop owners have this problem. Not enough for Apple to worry about I guess. :(

I have, but Apple was kind enough to replace it.

And does the new one sleep and wake properly? Even with externals connected to it? No problems whatsoever with sleep/wake?

Also curious - how long had you had your first one when they replaced it? Did you purchase the Penryn initially?

Firmware Update anyone????

Apparently there is a firmware update out there for mac notebooks...

Has anybody done the firmware update? Any word on whether or not it cures the sleep problems? I'm a bit wary of doing any updates, since the last 2 or 3 I've gone with have resulted in more bugs. Almost time to call an exterminator.

Since July, and it was a Santa Rosa. The new one has no problems....yet.

I just wait the minute as my computer loads all the data it has cached in deep sleep back into RAM and everything works. Sure it looks like the computer doesn't wake up immediately, but just take a break or something and the computer will wake up.

Yeah, that doesn't work for me. I've waited a very long time.

I installed it but haven't noticed any changes in the sleep issue, unfortunately.

I had the same problem. I was persistent enough with Apple for them to send me a new computer (MBP, 2.2 GHz). Within a day of having the new one it did the same thing, where the screen would NOT come on despite the rest of the computer waking from sleep.

Somehow, I happened upon a thread that said if you turn off the "Network" portion on iStat the problem would be solved.

I did that, and now, months later, no issues.

Not sure if this will work for all, but it made me not HATE my computer any more.

Rats.

bummer - I was really hoping that would hold the answer. I will wait - maybe - until 5.3 comes out, and if the combination of this firmware and 5.3 doesn't fix it, I am going to call Applecare for sure. At least one person has posted that their Penryn does not have the sleep/wake issue. Anybody out there confirm or dispel this? If it's consistent that the SR MBPs have the issue and the Penryns do not... I definitely want to get my hands on one. Hey - I know what I'll do... I'll go to a Mac retailer and try and duplicate the issue on a new one. I'll post back with my results...;)

So far I have not had any luck monkeying around with iSat or any of it's settings. Haven't tried just disabling the network though... will try - and report.... UPDATE - DIDN'T have any effect

MacBook Pro Won't Wake from Sleep

I bought my MacBook pro in February and had no problems with sleeping until I added an external monitor. Apple's instruction tell you to close the lid of your MacBook Pro and then his a key from your external keyboard to wake it up so that you can see your external monitor. that's when I have the same problem everyone else has described. I don't have any problems with any of the things I have attached via USBs, which includes an external keyboard, mouse and back-up hard drive, only the monitor.

I would like to try the iStat thing suggested but don't know what iStat is or where to find it. Any suggestions?

'just installed "version 1.5 of the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update"...

...too early to know if this is a real fix yet.

Been following the thread (from beginning to end). So i'm optimistic. But then posting #195 seems to already assert that it's a non-fix. Plbbbt. Only time (and perhaps lots of it) will really tell... and then we can still all be anxious that it's still in there, lurking, waiting for the most in-opportune time to rear back up and bite one's a**.

'Not sure of how to correlate "v1.5" that the firmware installer called itself with what SystemProfiler says. 'Whatever.

The install process went OK for me. Forafireescape, can you confirm that the update is definitely installed for you?... check SystemProfiler.

To be clear(er), SystemProfiler says i now have "Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07", on a 2.2 GHz MBP, 15".

BTW, can someone enlighten me to (the difference between) "SantaRosa" and "Penryn".

Thanks,
pax,
Karl
