Just a quick question: What are you guys doing usually when it gets too hot and shuts down?

Send it into Apple to get your heatsink replaced....

Not your Logic Board for it will do nothing!

Well Im taking my MacBook in tommrow :( . Today it wasn't usable for ~2 hours because it kept on shutting off right away. So don't call me lazy for not reading through the 7 pages but how long does it take and should I buy an external drive to back up my data before it gets shipped off?

When mine went in it took a day to get it fixed and they didn't touch my data, but they messed up my repair and it had to go right back in and it took a week this time its scheduled to come back on monday according to fed ex. Some people are haveing several week delays in getting it fixed. Also I would never send my computer off for repair without backing up my data first(really should be backing it up anyway :D)

ummm, it's not getting too hot.

Booting up
Browsing in Safari
Listening to iTunes
Burning a CD
anything...

Though the first time it ever happened I was encoding a DVD.

Neither does the heatsink in my case.

Word on the street is that new spec'd logicboards are being made and that's the reason for the delays.

Is there currently a delay? In the US, repairs seem to be taking around a week or so now, no?

They got mine last Friday and I got it back this Friday, with the delay being the casing. (I sent it in for RSD and the discoloration issues).

How were you guys able to get updates on what they were waiting for and such? All they would tell me is that its being repaired and thats all the info we have, we can put a request in for information but it takes 24-48 hours to get a response and even after 48 hours they still had nothing to tell me.

You can check on the repair status at www.apple.com/support. It just says whether it's being repaired or if it has been shipped. Mine has been worked on for a week now and they said they would upgrade it to business critical. I would love to know if they have even opened the computer up at this point.

yeah I knew about that but people are saying the applecare reps are telling them just what was going on, like what they were waiting for and such. They didn't have any such information when I called.

Wonder why? When I called they were pretty quickly able to tell me that they were waiting on the bezel. Mine was in the Flextronics plant. Wonder if they can't see the detailed status in certain locations?

waiting since august 28th

mine is in for repair since august 28th !
still waiting for them to fix it.

That's really a long time without my new macbook.

I do recommend the macbook to somebody who needs to spend 1000$ on something and then send it for repair for a month
but
I don't recommend the macbook to any users who wants to use his new computer on a daily basis.

Thats the same plant that mine went to. The Flextronics plant in Memphis TN. Oh well its coming back tomorrow morning according to fed ex tracking so I can see how well they fixed up their initial botch job

So would you still buy one?

So sounds like people here have been through a lot of hassle with their new macbooks. Sorry to read about all your frustration.

I'm in Hong Kong at the moment and was planning to buy one whilst I'm here (they're about $200 cheaper than the UK) but all these reports of problems are putting me off.

Someone mentioned that models produced after week 30 (as shown by the serial number) seem to be having fewer problems. Has any one here had the RSS with a macbook made after week 30?

Cheers,

Acro

I'm so, so upset right now. I just got it back and the top is scratched 10 times worse than the first time I sent it in. There is dirt/grease caked at the top of the keyboard area the edge where the grey stops and the white starts, the keyboard part isn't even on all the way its popped up a large amount by the ports and my I sight isn't even pushed into the bezel around the display it kind of pops out an eigth of an inch or more.

OOOOH I'm so mad, over a week waiting for it and this. The return box specifically said plastic in the problem description. I am calling in a little while when I cool down, this is unbelievable.

On Friday, I dropped my MacBook off at the Apple Store.

On Sunday, I picked it up - with replaced Logic Board and Heatsink. We'll see how it goes!

(This is the second time I've dropped it off there for Random Shutdowns. The first was in August and they replaced the Logic Board.)

All these reports of people getting their Macbooks back kinda relieves me. Mine went to the Memphis plant as well. I really need my computer back before the weekend.

Scratch that, joebells looks like he had a difficult time with his... I hope the same guys who repaired yours aren't repairing mine:eek:

Can anybody that sent their macbooks to memphis TN tell me what your technician id is? My technician ID is the same for both repairs. So either they just fill that field in with whatever or somehow the same technician got a hold of mine both times and he possibly took revenge on me because I complained about his shoddy work.

The technician ID is down near the bottem of the box on the applecare service detail sheet that comes back with your computer when you send it in.

Maybe they traced your forum name here to your MacBook and are purposefully going slow?

I thought that after 21 days you got a free replacement or something. What does AppleCare say when you call them?

If everyone else is getting their MacBook back, why isn't yours coming back?

Mine's been on 24x7 since Friday AM with no RSDs. Have had to reset the PRAM when rebooting though.

I will PM you my tech ID when I get mine back. My book went to Texas the first time, tennessee this time. I called AppleCare and Sara had the repair "expedited" and said if there is no change by Wednesday call back.

I really need some of my emails off the machine for work and I have a class presentation to do on the 11th. I NEEDS a computer, I'm even bidding on some old laptops on eBay for <$100 just so I can have one or at least have a backup computer if I have to send my MB in again.

This is just ridiculous.

What happened to your old TiBook?

It came back this morning and about the only thing that really got done was they scratched the heck out of the top of the machine, really really really scratched it. It almost had to of been intentional its that bad. I checked the technician id between the two repairs and it says the same number. Someone on a different forum had the same technician id though so maybe its just a generic number they put in there.

Freaking apple wants me to send it back in for a third repair even though the guy last time promised that if the machine wasn't fixed this time they would replace it.

Call AppleCare and ask for Customer Relations, or send an email with some pics to steve@apple.com .. someone on his team should get back to you (from what I've read on the forums here).

I always read that replacements happen on the fourth time, but maybe they can swing something for you since they're having such a hard time fixing your MacBook. :(

UPDATE:

Called AppleCare: September 15 (Friday)
Shipped to Memphis: Septemeber 18 (Monday)
"Repair in Process": September 19 (Tuesday)
Shipped back to Utah: September 25 (Monday)
Scheduled to be delivered: September 26 (Tomorrow)

The frustrating thing is that on my first call I was told "Your computer will spend more time in shipping then with Apple. You'll have it back by Thursday (9/21/06) at the latest". Frustrating. Now let's just see what condition it is in when I receive it tomorrow....
