all my threads saying i got a macbook with no problems are now void.

i had 2 random shutdowns today out of nowhere (first thought the power to the house went out but the lights were still on lol)

now it seems to be ok so maybe it was a fluke........or should i call applecare

plus i may be over 90days so can you still call them if its hardware failure?

i got mine in mid to late julyish

I thought Mine was a fluke also at first, call applecare now and ask for a box.
I begin to think this is a design issue, which may means all the macbook produced before Sept. will have this problem sooner or later...

btw, for now, Im using smcFancontrol.app to increase the rpm of the fan. somebody reported in apple forum about this app. said to be helpful reduce or "eliminate (maybe not)" the RSS.

I had a hardware problem with my old PowerBook after the 90 days was up. It wasn't any problem to get them not to charge for the phone call.

good to know. isnt the phone service relating to problems concerning non hardware probalem anyways? well it hasnt happened for a while so i hope its ok. i cant really afford to give up my computer at this time

the reason i bought it was because i need it for school lol

Is there any permanent damage to keep using a MB with RSD? I've had over 70 RSDs so far (I have to go through at least 6 a day) but can't turn it into apple until after nextweek when midterms are over.

i dont know but i wouldnt think so.

out of curiousity, does the problem get worse? as in did you have a few rsd's then more frequently as time went on?

i kinda dont want to send my computer in since i need it (more like rely on it) and i keep it is nice condition. i fear they will scratch up the case and smudge up my keyboard and screen lol.

also does apple compensate users in anyway due to inconviencing us? as in a discount on future purchases or anything? if not I would think it would be appropriate if they did (like how some car companies rent out a car to you for no cost while yours is getting fixed under waranty)

Rsd

RSD....sounds like some sexually transmitted disease! My problems started a few weeks ago and i hate it. I never thought a £900 laptop would experience such major problems! You would have thought they apple would have done something about this by now giving the amount of people that seem to have the same problem.

To all you people out there with the same problem i have found a minor solution. It seems that i can stop the RSD by just running off AC. I have taken my battery out and just plugged the ac cable in. Not the ideal solution as cant really use it as a laptop and there is a danger of dust eating away at the RAM chips but until i can take into to an apple store its the only solution. No RSD for other a week, fingers crossed. Anyone else discovered this?

Cheers

Shine on......

I went into the applestore the other day to visit a very nice gentle man at the genius bar. They are convinced that the RSD problem is to do with the heat sick. They have to order the parts and i should have my precious apple back next weekend...ill let you know how it goes

So, I bought my fiancee a MacBook a month or so ago and everything has been going really well - until last week. That's when it started to randomly shut down without any notice. She would start up the computer, log in, walk away, and then bang, it's off.

Any ideas?

This is also happening to my macbook now (bought sept 06). I have done no upgrades on it and the problem started about a week or so ago. After booting up, it automatically blacked out, 3x. It happened again after afew days, about twice more, but each time, after the 3rd or 4th booting, it would go and function as normal. However, this morning, I was already at the 5th try and it still wouldn't boot up properly. Mac was not overheated, it always came from shut off or sleep modes.

My brother's MB is also in service due to RSS issue.
While at the genius bar, he complained about the lack of quality.
And the genius guy got uncomfortable hearing that and started to talk back how Mac is great and that only very small portion of MB has the problem.

Well.. my brother got freaked out little bit.. ..
not exactly the things to say to a guy who drove 3 hrs to get his MB fixed.

RSD in Thailand

Hi,
I am Thai and also had the RSD problem as well. I got the notebook back since last Thursday which they replaced the logic board for me. So I have my finger crossed. But it strangely true for Thailand and I am so ashamed. Because after I checked my notebook when I received it back, I found out that they took worst care of mine. The cover was so glossy while I got many scratches at the bottom, when I returned to the same store, the store manager, just looked at it and said, it was heavily used since he could tell by the changed to 'yellowish' in the keypad. I was so mad since I bought this notebook about 3 months and I used it during night before I went to bed. Because I have another notebook when I'm at the office.

So it seem the Authorized Reseller that Apple had chose here in Thailand was unprofessional as well as irresponsible of their act.

And now I am so upset of using this apple while I am not sure where else should I turn to. Do you think I can talk or email to any one at the Apple Headquarter? Or they would just dismiss me?

Very upsetting with the services.
Wan
Bangkok, Thailand

Wan, Im really fussy about my macbook and I would be so mad if it came back with scratches. My experience in Thailand is that service can either be the best in the world, or the worst..

It's concerning that they changed your mb when it's clear now that its a heatsink issue.

Im still living with it, sometimes it goes a week with no problems, then like today it shuts down 4 times before it settles down. Yesterday for the first time it shut down after I had been using it for a couple of hours, until now it's only ever happened in the first 15 mins of use.

Im going to carefully open the case and insulate the wires the run near the heatsink, I will try to do it in such a way that I can put it back as it was if it does not work, there do not appear to be any warranty stickers that need to be destroyed.

I will update later.

i kinda dont wa

LOL YES! I had to power it on 15 times straight toniught until it didn't shutdown anymore.

I hope someone still check this thread >_>..

Anyone..My Macbook was running fine for a month, until yesterday I came back from a trip.

I left the Mac turned on for 2 days and have it turn off its monitor while I was gone. When I come back, the Mac does not response to my mouse/keyboard and the Monitor stays black. I restarted it, the mac book boots into grey screen and make strange beeping noise. I assume that is the RAM. Anyone, I reboot again and it boots OSX successfully. Then the grey screen happens and tells me to restart my system.

After rebooting, the mac stays in the grey sceen and have NO RESPONSE to anything. I tried all the reset options, safe mode and boot from disc but no go, it simply not reacting to the keyboard.

Hope someone can help -_-; thanks in advance

It doesn't sound like the RSS I experienced, RSS seems always just shutdown w/o any gray screen, and sometimes has difficulty to reboot, but still, didn't see any gray screen and always shutdown w/o asking for any action.
anyway, You should call apple for your problem too, even if not RSS, its a problem.

I had the same wishful thinking as you when the second times it occurred, and now, It turned into a disaster that affecting my work (I had a conference just 6 days away). Go call applecare and ask for a box now.

Resetting the PRAM helped mine when it hung on the gray screen. If you've tried setting that and the PMU, I guess it's time to call AppleCare! :(

i need my computer though.....the whole reason i bought it because i need it. cant really go a month without it.

hows does apple compensate for this? since its clearly their fault

i mean not everybody can just afford to give up their computer when their work and school kinda depends on you having one

I asked them if they provide replacement for temporary use when my machine is in apple repair center, they said no.

DHL guy just picked it up, he is a nice guy, he told me the stuff will be able to ride tonite's flight to TN, apple should get it by tomorrow, lets wait and see if I will be able to get it back b4 I went to conference.

I called apple on saturday, UPS delivered the box and picked up the laptop on tuesday, DHL returned it this morning (thursday).

There were three things I asked them to fix - the RSD, the whine / idle CPU grinding noise, and the discolouring palm rests.

They replaced the top case it seems, although not very well since there's a gap between that and the laptop body in one area. They havn't dont anything to the annoying noises. Too early to tell about the RSD, I will update about it.

The letter says they replaced the top case, heatsink, bezel and sponge (what are those two?).

no problems so far, although one annoying new thing I've noticed is that the laptop body isn't level! the front right corner of the base is a little bent up it seems, as when i tap it lightly hits the desk! has anyone else ever noticed this?

the history...

bought it in the end of may...

topcase discoloration occurred...

*topcase replaced in august
replacement wasn't suited perfectly on the macbook (1mm gaps)
discoloration reoccurred in the following month, and the first RSS/RSD issues happened...

*topcase, screenbezel, heatsink replaced in september
no more RSS/RSD no discoloration so far... screenbezel sits loose on the bottom left side... grrrrmmmbbbllll but if that's all that's wrong... I won't complain... sometimes when I plug it in it says there is no battery present and I have to disconnect and reconnect the powerplug before the macbook recharges... screen brightness sometimes 'flickers' when useing it... goes back a notch and comes back to the preset (mostly happens when the brightness is set to maximum, according to my eye1 I have to set brightness to half for the right calibration, but when sitting in dark spaces and useing the iSight with msn I put the brightness on maximum, otherwise people complain that I'm looking so dark :p)

today I've noticed something that might be the 'next' thing... well together with the screen right? my battery was running on empty, but I was on the phone and did I care, it'll go in sleep and I plug it in and we're back.... NO we're not... it just went dead apparently when the power was gone... no sleep just off...

so I'll try the same situation again tomorrow... see if it happens again or not...

allso sometimes the iSight green light goes on when I boot the macbook and than you can't use the iSight at all... has happened since day1 but is no big issue...

sometimes I wish I hadn't bought this macbook :s

PS: NO the macbook isn't running any cooler than before... 55°C now and I'm only running safari & entourage... and it's only running for 30min now...

this clearly needs to be addressed publically by apple somehow. i really feel like it isn't "a small portion" of all the macbooks sold so far. sooner or later, it seems so many peoples' computers start to randomly shut down, or maybe its because only the users who have problems post on here. i took my computer to the service center at my school and i have been without it for a month. it really is a huge inconvenience like someone above said. i used to take it to every class, organize my notes, i have all my important class notes from the beginning of this semester and i have already gone back there twice to get information off the hard drive so i can study and do my school work. i called them today to see how it was doing and they said they have to replace the heat sink (sync?) because apple apparenly just figured out it wasn't a logicboard problem. NOW, the keyboard and mouse wont respond at all after the heat sink replacement, so i have to wait probably another month for a top case to come in (which is listed as out of stock on apple's website by the way) and for them to replace that. i am outraged.
