got mine back for an hour or so now. so far everything is good. except it is running quite low temp wise (dunno what as menu temp decided that it will permemenetly stick with 0 since the firmware update.

they didn't even do anything to my hard drive or anything so i didn't have to waste the afternoon shoving everything back on.

one happy bunny so far. haven't go 10.4.8 or any updates yet though.

That's great for you, I hope they don't return like they did for me and some other people. It won't happen for at least a month. But after that, who knows.

Turn it off, wait a second, turn it back on. Right after you turn it back on, hold these four keys at the same time: option-command(apple)-p-r

Keep them held until you've heard the startup sound 4x.
this is exactly why I frequent this forum.
I had the random shutdowns and called apple and sent my mb in and promptly received it back. Problem solved. Until of course I updated my software and on rebooting it I'd only get rainbow colors.
After starting it up like above it works fine again.

Thanks dude.

On a side note it only took a few days for them to fix and return my macbook. What is the longest someone has had to wait so far?

Hi,
I am Thai and also had the RSD problem as well. I got the notebook back since last Thursday which they replaced the logic board for me. So I have my finger crossed. But it strangely true for Thailand and I am so ashamed. Because after I checked my notebook when I received it back, I found out that they took worst care of mine. The cover was so glossy while I got many scratches at the bottom, when I returned to the same store, the store manager, just looked at it and said, it was heavily used since he could tell by the changed to 'yellowish' in the keypad. I was so mad since I bought this notebook about 3 months and I used it during night before I went to bed. Because I have another notebook when I'm at the office.

So it seem the Authorized Reseller that Apple had chose here in Thailand was unprofessional as well as irresponsible of their act.

And now I am so upset of using this apple while I am not sure where else should I turn to. Do you think I can talk or email to any one at the Apple Headquarter? Or they would just dismiss me?

Very upsetting with the services.

UPDATE: 10 Oct, 2006
Hi, just would like to update status after got back my notebook since 28th September that was caused by RSD. The notebook seem to work fined now, after they changed my Logic Board. As for the other issue, Authorized Reseller worst after-sales services, I sent email to Steve with pictures of my notebook and explained the situation, I just received a call on 9th October, from an authorised service centre in Thailand to make an appointment for further investigate and solve the issue. There was also an email from Steve's team to inform me that they acknowledged about my issue and because of that email, it confirmed me that they had taken some action for me. So I am now pleased with their prompt respond & action and hope it will work well for me this time as well. Not sure if this can happen to every cases but at least I think you should try. :)

Just experienced my first time, i ran out of office for 5 min, and found my macbook shutdown when I got back, not sure what will happen next, will see, if it become a problem, will backup my disk and send to repair.
shame on you, apple.

I noticed with mine that now the random shutdowns only happen when runing off of ac power after awhile of doing it. When it fist started it would shut off randomly both off ac and battery power and it did it constantly. Now i can go hours without it shutting off.

I havent yet been able to take it to the apple store yet(got a few other problems as well) so hopefully when i can they wont require me to show them the RSD with my week 24 macbook.

Wow this sucks...hours before my midterm my macbook gets RSD... I dont know what to do because I dont have time to back up the class notes and take it to the apple store. Another problem since I bought this macbook second hand the guy never transfered the applecare to my name... I dunno if apple will honor the 1 year waranty on my macbook since applecare is not in my name. My macbook also has a problem where I only used 11gb of the 45gb partitioned to OSX but it says I used 32gb so I am almost out of storage room.

My macbook is a 4H621 I am really sad that all this is happening with my first mac...

Edit: Now my sound cuts out randomly too. I have my headphones on then suddenly the music would stop playing... Id look up expecting that my macbook had shut down again but it hasn't just that my sound card or logic board is busted. I have to restart my computer to get it working again.

My Macbook has been RSDing for the past MONTH. I have yet to bring it in tho because f projects that I need to complete with a computer. But that will all be fixed after next week when midterms are over. However, I have an important question.

Do we have to show the RSD to apple genius bar? Cause sometimes it will RSD all day but othertimes will RSD like once in 3 or 4 days.

Apple Genius bar should be well aware of the RSD problems which is quite common.Suggest that you send the MB to replace either the Logic board or heatsink.I've changed the Logic board for over 1 week and no RSD till now.
Still on OSX 10.4.7.

Why still 10.4.7?

I had a different issue, but it took them about 4 days

Should I call Apple to have them send me a box to ship them my macbook or should I take it to the Apple store? I dont know if the previous owner transfered applecare to me yet...

I've heard of some Apple stores being able to do the repair on-site. They had to order the parts, so some folks brought their MacBook in to be diagnosed, kept it until the parts came in, then dropped it off.

my second hit came late today, I called apple, she advised me reseated my ram, then PRAM, if this happens again, I will call apple for a box, she said it will take 10 days.

Does resetting the PRAM really work?

I was wondering that, too.

The best I could come up with is that if a machine really has a RSD issue, then the PRAM reset won't help.

But maybe there are PRAM issues that may happen that look like RSD, but really aren't. It would suck if AppleCare had someone send in their computer for something that turned out not to be hardware related.

Don't know if that made any sense, but .. :)

ok so i ordered my macbook 2 weeks after it had came out onto the market. and yes i use it all the time i love the thing its like my child. i do although have the shiney trackpad, and my macbook also randomly shuts down. but u see the thing is that i dont think i ordered the applecare protection plan for it. now if i wanted to get it repaired what would they have to do to the laptop in order to make this problem stop, and if they cant do anything to stop the random shut downsm and they do indeed have to replace it will i be able to even without an applecare protection plan? if aybody reads this and has answers now im me on aim at RRoethel6, msn at RRoethel@hotmail.com or yahoo at rroethel6. thanks

Your MacBook has a one year warranty on physical problems like the RSD, so you're covered for anything like this until sometime next year.

Buying AppleCare extends your one year physical warranty to three years.

Im not sure if ram and pram will work, i just did it as applecare lady suggested, so far, im still waiting for the 3rd attack, at which I will call apple for a box. the lady herself wasn't sure about ram also, she said "reseat... pram.... altho probably not the problem there...." :D

I called apple on saturday, UPS delivered the box and picked up the laptop on tuesday, DHL returned it this morning (thursday).

There were three things I asked them to fix - the RSD, the whine / idle CPU grinding noise, and the discolouring palm rests.

They replaced the top case it seems, although not very well since there's a gap between that and the laptop body in one area. They havn't dont anything to the annoying noises. Too early to tell about the RSD, I will update about it.

The letter says they replaced the top case, heatsink, bezel and sponge (what are those two?).

Rsd

RSD....sounds like some sexually transmitted disease! My problems started a few weeks ago and i hate it. I never thought a £900 laptop would experience such major problems! You would have thought they apple would have done something about this by now giving the amount of people that seem to have the same problem.

To all you people out there with the same problem i have found a minor solution. It seems that i can stop the RSD by just running off AC. I have taken my battery out and just plugged the ac cable in. Not the ideal solution as cant really use it as a laptop and there is a danger of dust eating away at the RAM chips but until i can take into to an apple store its the only solution. No RSD for other a week, fingers crossed. Anyone else discovered this?

Cheers

My Macbook has just recently started to do this. I have found that it happens most often when I have the battery in, the adapter plugged in, but the battery fully charged. If I unplug the adapter and run off the battery, no prob. Same when I plug the adapter in but the battery is not fully charged. I have also noted that when it happens, the fans are not running, but on restart a check of the core temp seems high. Anyone else notice anything similar?

I'm really worried about this problems.
Are all the Macbooks on the published series affected? I'm being offered a Macbook (100Gb, 2Ghz, 1GB Ram) at a really good price (here in Peru at least :p)

However, I've just got it's serial number (the dreaded number): 4H6240NMVMN.

Is it a sure bet to faillure? Any ideas/recommendations here? I'm mostly worried considering here in Peru there aren't any Apple Stores, just Official Retailers and Authorised Service Centers, but don't know if they will take a USA-bought Macbook for repairs if disaster occurs :p

That price is really good :p

I have the same problem, but I am in México, the Macbook was purchased by one friend, and he me the shipment.

I not that I go to do, if the only solution is return the Macbook, and receive a new computer.
