PS: NO the macbook isn't running any cooler than before... 55°C now and I'm only running safari & entourage... and it's only running for 30min now...

The problem is not the MacBook running hot, it's the heatsink circuitry sending bad signals and/or THINKING it's much too hot.

Yes, they run pretty warm, but that's not the reason they're shutting down.

I know, but lot of people stated their MB running much cooler after the heatsink fix... wich is not true... at least in my case ;)

Going to a apple store today and see what they can do I guess..

Bleh >_> this is random and rediculous.

Can they mail the macbook back to me?

Why have they had it for a month when it appears most everyone else in the US that's had theirs in for service in the last 30 days has gotten it back much, much quicker?

If your keyboard and mouse aren't responding, it sounds like whoever put your computer together didn't hook them back up when they put your computer back together.

I'd really question the service that your school service center is giving you and strongly advise that you chose to let Apple overnight you a box for you to put your MacBook in and overnight back to them should your MacBook ever need further attention.

If they can't just fix it there (a lot of Genius Bars can) and have to mail it off to the depot to get fixed, yes, you can have the depot overnight it back to you when they're done.

That's what I did when I took my MacBook in for RSD service in early September.

I just got my MB today. i'm scared stiff after reading everyone's problems here. my unit was made from week 30. any issues coming from units made during this period?

From reading this ThinkSecret article, it looks like week 35 is when Apple fixed it on the assembly line.

Enjoy your MacBook. RSD isn't uncommon, but it's not like you're guaranteed to have the problem either. And as long as you're in the US and don't use the school service center that haletx2amehk used, chances are Apple will repair your MacBook quickly should it need the new heatsink.

Even with the RSD stuff I had to deal with, my MacBook is still my favorite laptop ever.

i've been very lucky w/ all my Apple products. i've never purchased a lemon. so I'd hate it if my fortunes took a turn for the worse now. but I guess, this is assurance enough (that Apple will repair it pronto, if in case)

It normally took 2-3 months to happen, hopefully, even if u get it, local apple store will have parts so they can fix it for you in no time.

I should get it back tomorrow, box requested on 14th (Sat), received on 16th (Mon), I sent it on 16th afternoon, in case anybody want to know the turn around time, all shipping are "next day service", provided by DHL/FedEx.
Will see if this fix everything.

i don't know if rsd is back

my computer is programmed to wake up everymorning... on the rare ocassions i forget to leave the lid open, it goes straight to sleep and wakes up when i turn it on. This morning that didn't happen and the computer was still off! oh my god please don't tell me its rsd again, i just had the new heat sink put in last month!

In other news, I think ,the top bezel is falling off and its starting to get black. grr.

Got it back, altho I don;t quite understand what they replaced, maybe somebody can help me?

from what i have seen on this subject, there is a wire from the thermo that is used to report the cpu's heat that runs right next to the heatsink . when the heatsink heats up it expands and it starts touching the wire from the thermo sensor and eventually melts a hole in the plastic coating on the wire and causes it to ground out and kick the machine off cause its thinking its overheated to a point of damage.

Looks like they replaced your heatsink and your casing. Does the area around your keyboard/palmwrest look more gray than before (i.e. not match the color of white at the bottom of the screen where it says "MacBook")?

yeah, its little bit greener, altho my old one doesn't have discoloration problem..
I know the heatsink, and top case, just wonder what those numbers are, such as, APP-607-0199 ASSY, etc, as well as "BEZEL"

I think the case is three seperate parts. I think the bezel is the area around the screen, then there's the top case, and then the area around the keyboard.

Even though you didn't have any problems with discoloration, maybe your MacBook was made during that run and could potentially have the problem in the future, so they saved you the hassle?

I specifically asked for mine to be changed because it was starting to yellow a bit, and they replaced the same part numbers as yours.

WHOO HOOO!!! I reached 150 power ons before the RSD stopped this afternoon (12:30 - 1:15pm)!

Anyways, midterms are over so I can finnaly turn this in. I don't have my recipt with me at the university but if I did the free ipod nano promotion I probably alreadyt registered my mac and don't need a receipt right>?

I don't think you need a recipt, just call applecare ask for a box.

Macbook RSS repair in Thailand

generik said:
1000 Baht isn't that bad, only 25 US dollars or so.

I'd gladly pay it if they can do a good job of it, heck, I'd slip 50 under the table if they can get some Apple branded spare parts out for me through their service channels :D

Well, given the problems I have had with applecare in Thailand, I decided to very carefully open the case and see if i could fix it myself.

Opening the case was fairly easy, and the cause of the RSS was very obvious, the heat sensor cables (2 pairs of wires) were brittle and melted where they pass under the metal bracket. I simply moved the wires away from the metal and put some more insulation between the hot metal and the wires.

It's early days yet, so Im not going to say for sure that it's fixed for good, but if it does it again I will make some new cables and route them well away from the hot bits. It's worth noting that the wires did not appear to be shorting, but the insulation had melted and was very brittle.

I was very cautious not to do anything that I could not return to it's previous state if I need to take it in for a warranty repair in the future, there are no warranty stickers to break or other tamper evident safeguards.

So far..so good.

Andy, In Thailand.

ok i called them and they are sending me a box tomorrow. 3 questions though

do i have to send it right away or can i wait a week (i have 4 exams theis week and need a computer lol)

and i had to give them my computer password. will this mean they will snoop around my files potentially. it would be alot of work to make sure i didnt have any sensitive data on ther (as in passwords to other things, files for work ect)

do i have to replace the ram to how i got it. my dad got a macbookpro and he upgraded to 2 gigs. I tool his 512 stick and added it to one of the original 256. So right now both sticks are apple ram.

this sucks pure and simple

are these new heatsinks guaranteed to fix the rsd problem?

thanks

u can wait up to 14 days i think,
yes, there is chance they can check your data, altho i don't think they would
no, there is no guarantee heatsink can solve it, just wait and see, it might, it might not. for now, apple thinks it does.

It's also nice to see that virtually everyone who's had their heatsink repaired after the 2nd week in September hasn't had any further problems, based on forum posts here and at Apple's MacBook support forum!

no at least not with things related to that part... I mean my sound has gone allready twice... only a restart gives it back... and sometimes the screens brightness flickers randomly... when I plug it in I sometimes get the no battery logo and so it doesn't charge, then I need to reconnect it and it sees the battery and starts charging... but those are all NEW things since the repair...

I'm glad to say the second topcase repair is the good one now it doesn't turn yellow anymore (yet??)

apple is in my bad book now... all my other macs worked without ANY glitch whatsoever, and most of them were rev A systems... but this one is just a pain in the **S
