Yet another issue - this one I'd really like to know if it is the case with every Macbook.

When I press on the spacebar as shown in the picture, it doesn't register. It also feel a lot less secure than the same point on the opposite end of the space bar. Otherwise the button works perfectly just in this little area apx 4mm wide in the bottom right hand corner.

Can someone else with a Macbook cheek this out please:

I just tried it on mine, it registers fine there. Probably just a manufacturing defect. Does it bother you much, or is it just a trivial thing? My PowerBook did that towards the end of it's life, so it does wear down to that point sometimes, so maybe it was just a piece that wasn't up to standards.

Yeah it is really annoying as I'm always missing spaces because of it. With a laptop you tend to type on all sorts of angles - like the Macbook on your belly whilst your lying down - and it tends to show itself more when your hands are on strange angles. That said, it also strikes every so often when I'm using it on a normal angle. I guess I could learn not to press it there - but should I have to? this is pretty shoddy if you ask me and more akin to build quality found on a 'make your own' laptop.

Thanks for testing it, it's good to know it is not occurring on others Macbooks as I feared it might be a REV-A keyboard issue.

I'll take the Macbook in to the Applecentre either today or Monday and keep everyone posted on my progress.

MacBook is superb, but...

...I'm a little concerned about the button beneath the touchpad which seems very unresponsive, particularly toward the centre. Left? Fine. Right? fine. Centre? Hmmm... Just wondered if this is a general thang with MacBooks.

What is really irritating me is that the customer services rep. at the Apple Store (UK) talked me into buying a Tucano Second Skin. No problem there except it's for a 12" iBook and is a very, very snug fit. I wouldn't expect the zip to last very long. I understand that they've probably got excess stock laying around occupying precious floor space in their warehouse, and I'm certain that she probably slipped iBook into the conversation under her breath to cover herself legally, but I came away with the distinct impression that I was getting a case for a MacBook not for an iBook. Grumble, grumble...

Loving OSX though. Loving it. It's so quick to pick up. Looking forward to forgetting all my Windows habits.

Welcome to our side :) Being a switcher myself I feel the need to say that it will be hard and annoying to get rid of the old ways - but it is well worth it in the end. Make sure you do a web search if you find something missing that you loved in Windows as often times it's just hidden or done a better way in OSX.

And pump up the beast with RAM to keep it feeling zippy!

RE: your skin - I'm waiting for the Australian skin manufacturer to release their 13inch version myself. The Apple store tried to do the same thing to me when I bough my Macbook except they wanted me to buy the 14in skin!

I visited a nearby Apple Store and checked out the new Macbooks.

This is not meant as Apple bashing (I've been buying Apple Computers since 1982), but I was terribly disappointed. The overall construction reeked of "cheap" -- and the glossy screens made a purchase an absolute non-starter.

I was given an HP laptop at my job. While the screen looks fantastic when you first open up the lid, when using it the reflection is terrible. I want to see what I'm writing not my shirt reflected back at me.

The only problem with my old G4 screen is that it isn't bright enough -- but there is no reflection problems.

But that still isn't the reason I won't purchase a Macbook -- it looks and feels like a Yugo. We all pay a premium to buy Apple products. But when we use them we aren't embarrassed to showoff our computers. If I bought a Macbook I would hide it every time someone came around.

I know this won't apply to everyone, but that is just the way it is. I'll probably end up with a 15" MBP instead -- something roughly equivalent to what I already have, but with the new chips and drives. Too bad, I really could use a lower end Mac -- but not THIS low end.

Hi guys/girls,

I'm a bit worried about my Macbooks casing. It is as though the screen has been put on on an angle - being flush on the left hand side but sticking out and not matching up on the right.

ibook.jpg
.

It has not had any rough and tumble treatment and is barely 20 days into my ownership so I can only assume this is an manufacturing fault.

I have two questions a) has anyone else seen this issue, and, b) is this sort of thing covered under Apple's warranty as the computer still runs perfectly.

i am at work right now. and i am look at some new macbooks that came in. and the one in my hands right now has your same buldge. you may want to go to a mac store and check it out on other machines. funny everything is straight. it's just has a buldge on the side.:(

Welcome to our side :)

Well, ta very much for the welcome. :) It's lovely to be here, finally. Have used Macs in studio environments for years without ever earning enough moolah to have one at home. Whaddayaknow? Leave studio work, get a proper job and the Mac I've been after for yonks. Alanis Morrisette would, given the opportunity, undoubtedly mis-label that as ironic. Still, I can now start building a home studio set-up. Shall be upping the RAM to at least 1gb if not 2, external hard-drive, and a copy of Logic Express all within the next few months; finances permitting of course.

This touchpad business has got me spooked. I don't know whether it's really anything to be worried about or not. There's no reassuring click when de-pressed and occasionally, when applying anything less than absolute pressure, it will drop out when dragging/resizing windows etc. only for me to watch the re-instated pointer skim across the screen and then, when the touchpad button resumes contact, pick up or action some other unsuspecting item.

I think I have the whine although am not sure. It could just be tinnitus. May also have the moo but then the quack has just changed my behavioural control medication so I'm guessing it could be that messing with my head. The heat is really not an issue though. Overall, very happy. The performance and ease-of-use of this OS is astounding. It does sort of feel like it is designed for you to enjoy rather than reconcile yourself with (i.e. Windows). Smart.

Anybody got squeaking hinges on their MacBooks?

nope. that definitely sounds like something is going wrong and should be fixed. Make sure your screen is not like mine and offset slightly (see above photos).

My old ibook g3 did that and it annoyed the sh*% out of me - apparently that was an unresolved issue with that model (I bought it second hand), but I haven't heard of that problem affecting anyone with a Macbook.

it IS Annoying. i had the EXACT same problem with my old Ibook G4. I took it in to apple REPEARTEDLY and they ran tests and told me that it was fine...fine being that there was nothing physically wrong. They NEVER fixed it. and yes it did make life a living hell because i click on the edge of the spacebar and i had to reteach myself how to type and hit the center of the bar which doesnt seem like much of an adjustment until you actually try to do it at 70 words per minute. Otherwise my words would just run together. Sorry, maybe they will change yours...

When I played with MBs at the Apple Store the other day, I did notice some display units had squeaking hinges as I changed the screen angles. None of my Mac notebooks I own does not have this symptom. I think that is hit or miss depending on your luck.

So far my MacBook is working wonderfully. I got it about 3 days ago. It mooed only once when I was installing OSX on the new hard drive I switched out (and the computer was VERY hot then, but it was understandable then, since it was running full power for about 2 hours). No dead pixels, no crooked hinge, nothing wrong. It hasn't mooed since that one time. The space bar works no matter where I press it. Now I just need to wait out a couple weeks to see if any discoloration shows up, but I don't think any will since I type without my wrists laying on the laptop.

trackpad issues

Another problem guys.

Again I'd love to hear from other Macbook owners about this one.

Basically after a couple of sleeps, my Macbook stops being able to right click with the track-pad (ie. two fingers on the pad + a click). Strange issue that I'm assuming has to be software. Anyone else with the same issue?

Anyone using a MacBook have kind of a mushy mouse button? Sometimes I have to hit it a couple of times before it registers. This could be me though, my PowerBooks button has more of a 'snap' to it and I may have just become a little too accustomed to it.

No such problem here. I would have it looked at.

Mmm. Mines not working that way at the moment. Is this a preference?

Yeah it's in the preferences. It's a really really good feature so if you haven't got enabled you should try it out. If you meant I might be able to fix it with some preference ticking - I can't see anything that would help :-(

Also I went into the Apple centre regarding my monitor and spacebar and they said they were not prepare to fix it under warranty. So I'm going to have to ring Apple and demand some action! I played around with the other macbooks in the store and their spacebars felt much firmer than my own and the screens were not offset - so I'm convinced my issues are unique and should be covered under warranty.

2 fingers allows scrolling and I have the doubletap, but two fingers and mouse does nothing...

I just noticed that you are on a macbook pro. I think I read somewhere on the forum that they have a different set of options which excludes the right click. If it makes you feel anybetter I can't enable double tapping which I hear is addictive once used. Hopefully Apple will give us both our options in 10.4.7.

I just got my macbook back from repair and am happy to say that my keyboard is completely fixed - they even replaced the top casing where the keys sit, I guess because of the staining scare. Anyhow - Macbook is feels and looks great now :)

hello! I just got my new macbook 2ghz white and I've got a couple of issues that worry me. I've got this thing with fans. They turn on for 1-2 secs and then off. Is this a deffect??

If I push it to far (600 files transferring) the fans start to make louder noise and sound like the take off of an aeroplane when started and like the landing when they turn off. Is this ok?

I charge it now and for 20-25 minutes its stuck in 99% and and the mag safe light does not turn green. For how long should I wait?

thank you in advance for the answers

The fan issue is known as mooing, and is a known issue. Expect a firmware fix.

The battery issue is not a problem. It just does that sometimes. Be sure to condition your battery properly, fully charging it and fully draining it a couple of times, and then do so at least once a month.
