Go to Ramseeker.com and search at top for MacBook Pro (same ram), then click on the PRICE LINK $71.99 across from Omni OPTIVAL listing which will take you to the Omni page where you can buy at that price. Any other path will cost you a LOT MORE. :)
I have an Omni OPTIVAL piece of RAM in my computer. It's awesome, it works great! (so far) Apps are snappy, OS X purrs, heating isn't an issue as much (summer you guys, summer lol). *hugs* They have some good quality RAM.

What's the obsession with black? Won't that look like all the other HP/Compaq, Dell notebooks?==
=O Heck No, its a glossy black, like the glossy white iBooks. Just marks will appear better on the black (meaning scratches and that)

Nope, it's a matte black. It looks like the old G3 PowerBooks (ie. damn fine).

Hey I've been reading the forums for a while now and I'll be switching to a Mac soon because I'm fed up with PC's and after reading up on mac's they just seem so much better. I'll be buying my first mac next week and I think it's gonna be the Macbook, which leads me to my questions.....

1) Will Pro Tools M-Powered (when its universal) work well and what will the track count be like with 1 gig of ram?

2) Will Ableton Live and other similar programs such as reason and logic run well and be able to handle a decent amount of software instruments etc.

I have so many more questions but thats enough for just now. Thanks in advance for any help people can give me.:)

The only thing I can tell you is that performance will be good with all of these things, as they are all audio programs and all Macs do great things with audio.

However, I can't give you any specifics. My best guess for you is that it would be similar to (if not better than) just about any brand-new PC laptop. The web site http://www.xlr8yourmac.com has many benchmarks for all sorts of applications, perhaps you should check there.

3) I'm gonna be buying a mac desktop (possibly the new powermac whenever it arrives) so will I be able to network the the macbook with the powermac and use both mac's together for combined processor power?

It depends. If you're talking about clustering, it is in fact possible, but I doubt you will be able to use it with regular consumer applications (software needs to be written specifically for it, I think.)

However, you certainly can divide up tasks between the two computers - e.g. run Reason on your MacBook while running Pro Tools on your PowerMac. That will, in essence, give you increased throughput.

in the mean time i shall have to make do with this :D

P.S , it's not mine BTW it my brother's

Looks like you took a screenshot of the OS X desktop with some apps showing and set it as your desktop picture on your windows machine. It's funny since the whole setup (webcam, ugly PC laptop, etc.) shows the vast dichotomy between PCs and Macs ;)

Hey thanks a lot for that...it really helped. I guess I just wanted to be sure that it was gonna be able to handle all the audio work i'm gonna be doing in my home studio.

I'm way to excited about getting my first mac:D

When are you going to buy your new MacBook - and, are you going to buy white or black?

Just curious

Just ordered mine! A litttle nervous after going through 3 whining MBPs, but we'll see!

Don't be nervous. First Regent Street gave me the wrong MacBook (1.83), then the right one (2.0, 60GB), and then I swapped it for a black one, so I have first hand at-home experience with three MacBooks. They have all been nearly dead silent. Quietest notebooks I have ever used.

Macbook future buyer

Hi everyone!

I'm a longtime PC user and became just recently aware of my blindness concerning the current apple products.

I decided a few months back, after thoughtfull investigation that the best thing for my current situation would be to change to the mac platform as soon as possible.

After the release of the new macbook I was thrilled that I could do this without spending all my (limited) budget.

Nevertheless I have some questions that have come forward after reading the posts in this thread.

1st - Is it easy to strip the aluminium enclosure that comes with the hard drive on the macbook? Are there any screws attached to the hd itself? I would need to know this if I am to replace the hard drive with a different one.

2nd. - I am considering waiting until the new 160gb hd from seagate comes out to buy the macboo and replace it's hd with it. However I could also replace th eoriginal hd with a 100gb 7200rpm for a faster performance. My question is, is it doable? To put a 7200rpm hd in the macbook. Apple doesn't even have it as a BTO option. Why is this?

Please forgive me for any mistakes while writing this post. I haven't written in english in a while.

Thanks for your time.

yep , thought that would be the easy option

even if i could put Tiger on PC it would run like a dog on a celeron 1.4 :D

just goes to show the difference between Mac design and PC's;)

I would have thought a Celeron 1.4 is better than a 667MHz G4, and that runs Tiger quite well:p

I can't imagine that the MacBook won't support 7200RPM, but better someone more technically minded absolutely endorse that.

As for replacing your drive, it is easy to do, but any damage you may do in the process will void your warranty, so just be careful. That said, it couldn't be easier.

Now, the really important bit. After using a MacBook for a few days my conclusion is that the 5400rpm drive is the biggest bottleneck in the system at the moment. I would DEFINITELY hold out for a 7200 if you are going to swap out the drive. I plan to do the same.

I need to pay a cheque in on monday so as soon as that clears at the bank i'll be ordering 1.83ghz white model with an upgrade to 1gig RAM. I'm not really too bothered about a superdrive and i think the black is quite boring...much prefer the white!

So happy to finally change to a mac. The next few weeks is going to be hellish waiting for it to arrive haha. It's the start of my home studio so I can't wait:)

I was initially going to buy the macbook pro but I didnt really want to spend that much money so I was very please when the macbook finally arrived because it means I can now afford a desktop aswell as all my recording gear. I'm going to be geekin' it up big style over the next few months!

The only reason I'd want it black is to make it match my Nikon D2x DSLR color.

And yes, it's important, when you are making somebody pay you for taking pictures, to give him an impression of professional. For the same reason, a black camera can be used professionally, and a silvery no, even if they have the very same specs.

Sad but true. They look as much at the your gear as at the result.

The other solution would be the MacBook Pro. If they had -again- a 13" Silver or Black MBP, I'd be in.

All this said, I'm going for a 2Ghz White with 2Gb Ram, despite the colour and the integrated graphics. I prefer to save on this colour side and buy later a better PowerMac

By the way, yesterday I was at a store who sells Apple, and they told a girl who was there looking for a PowerMac to wait, because it wouldn't be long before it's being replaced. At the same store, I was also told a couple of months ago that the MacBook was due to mid-May. Cross your fingers...

And another funny thing, they had in demo a whining MBP! I touched it, and it wasn't hot, but I noticed a noise (the store wasn't exactly quiet) and launched PhotoBooth. It made the noise stop immediately.

J.

7200 rpm vs. more RAM

Would the har drive speed be far less critical on a MacBook fitted with 2GB of RAM?

The RAM should help to be less disk-bound. It will not help load times for programs/data however. So in short, it helps, but the drive speed is still a bottleneck.

When you launch an application (that was not running in the background, i.e did not have the black triangle in the dock), it has to be retrieved from the hard drive. Same thing is with files. More RAM can't accelerate the first start of an application, the hard drive is truly the bottleneck here.

There is one big disadvantage of fast hard drives: they need more power so they are reducing battery drive a lot (30-40 minutes less battery life than with a 5400 rom drive is realistic). And they usually get warmer and make more noise. I say 5400 rom is the sweet spot for a notebook. Most modern drives (the stock Macbook drives too) have the same power consumption as 4200 rom drives, so personally, I would use a 5400 rom drive for now. Plus, the faster the disks are, the more sensible to shock they are (when running). Of course, if you find a 7200 rpm drive with 120 GB than runs at the same power consumption as a normal 5400 rpm, let me know ;)

I need a Macbook by early september for uni purposes, I would like one now obviously but I can hold out.

The question is do you think that there'll be a revision out before then? Any chance of Merom or even anything minor? I've never owned a Mac or kept up to date with hardware news so I have no idea how long it usually takes revisions to come out.

After using the black model you can see the oil from your fingers on the trackpad and keyboard. I would prefer buying the white one over the black after seeing this.
