Mantronix, what do you think about your screen? The 9CA8 is also another new screen model used in the latest MBs & it seems like it is also very good:

I have no complaints about it to far. I did notice a better screen quality than older unibody macbooks but I thought since mine was a week old that could be the reason why. I can take some pictures of it when I get home with my Nikon D40 and to let you guys see.

Determining panel type - terminal method

Also, you can find out what panel you have by opening the terminal program in OSX and pasting the following command:
ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

This method spits out the manufacturer code of the panel - different from Apple's mmod codes. You can then google the code to find out who makes it and view the vendor's spec. page. The credit for this info goes to MacRumors member JayLenochiniMac. It was posted here in a thread on 20" iMac panel quality. Here's the link for anyone interested:

Thanks for sharing that command. I personally was not aware of this command previously. I guess I learn a new thing each day. :)

Ok I did that command line in the terminal and it came up with this.

B133EW04 V3

EDIT: Ok I did a Google search on the model number and the company who makes this LCD is called AU Optronics. Anyone ever heard of them?

This is scary, if I get a alu refurb how can I guarantee I get the new screen? How long do refurbs stay in the store? can I call and ask for a refurb after a certain production week?

seems like if 2 people buy the same product they are entitled to getting the same specs. This stealth screen change is upsetting.

At least you have not bought your MB yet & will get the chance to have one that has the latest screen. :)

For me & the other MB owners, we're all SOL. The only way for us to get that is to loose "some" money by selling what we have & re-purchase it again. This is what pisses me off & it probably sums up why people have been saying "never to buy a rev. A product!" :(

I am hoping to buy a refurbished mac soon. how long do you think it will be before these new screens are on the refurbished models?

I have no idea when the refurb MBs will come with that screen. You can always do a "buy it & return it" kinda thing. :(

I bought a Unibody Macbook 2.0GHz back in November and my girlfriend loved it so much I ended up giving it to her (she was due for a computer upgrade anyways). Since then I've been through a few Windows laptops (Dell D430, Lenovo X200, etc.) and just kinda missed the "Mac world" so ended up buying a Unibody Macbook 2.4GHz in late April. Her 2.0GHZ UMB has the 9C89 screen, my recent 2.4GHz UMB has the "newer" 9CA5 screen being discussed in this thread. As such I figured I'd provide some comparison shots. Sorry for the poor quality as I'm using a rather old Canon cheap point-and-shoot:

Same. :)

MacBook 2.4GHZ ALU
Production year: 2009
Production week: 15 (April)
Production number: 4546 (within this week)

Was a replacement for my old MacBook White (Mid-07) from AppleCare, had it for a week today :D

Pretty freakin' happy with it, unfortunately don't have any other MacBooks to compare it with, if anything it looks better than the old MacBook, haven't got any complaints re: display angles or anything. :)

The right one is the newer one? :p

In the side-by-side shots the "newer" 9CA5 is on the left whereas the 9C89 is on the right.

Going top-left to bottom-right, the solo shots are the 9CA5 first, then the 9C89
Hope these shots help as a basic comparison.

Yea in the shot you linked BeauGiles the 9C89 on the right actually looks kinda better. I guess I have to "calibrate" these screens or what-not. Both of them are stock straight out of the box with no display calibration done.

Thank you for those shots hellfire!
There sure is a difference in the blacks with the lights out.
In every day daylight use, do you notice much difference?

Yeah, I really had no idea :p I just chose that one as it was the better looking screen.

For my 9CA8 screen, I'm currently using this profile, and I must say it's a lot better than the original stock profile. Haven't looked into any of the other profiles however. :)

Thanks for the shots. The blacks look way better but do you think colors are better on the old screen? I don't know if I would pick better color or better blacks?

dloreski, I mainly use the 2.4GHz now so don't really know if I notice a difference in day-to-day. I do always read how people complain about the Macbook's screen quality (I had the Pro and Air before) and never thought it was THAT bad when I used the 2.0GHz UMB with the 9C89 screen.

However when I got the 2.4GHz with the 9CA5 screen I did notice how it looked different than the 9C89. I kinda like it better.

I'm not an expert at all with colors and profiles etc. but I just like looking at the 2.4GHz with the 9CA5 better but perhaps others will thing that the 9C89 has "better color" (guess not "all is lost" for those with the 9C89 screen? :D ). Just my $0.02.

hellfire88, thanks for posting those photos. Do you mind taking a few comparison pictures with the screen tilted at different angles (like titling back a bit from normal viewing angles, titling it forward from normal viewing angles, etc.)? :)

By the way, if any existing Alu MB owners (with "crappy" screens) are going to complain to Apple to see if they can get their screens replaced, please kindly post in this thread. I'm interested to read about your outcome.

The JCDisplay screen calibration is best, but the screen is not as bright as the original profile.

i am thinking of calling up apple one of these days...sucks that the new units, not even a new revision already has better screens.

Bought a 2.4GHz unibody MacBook less than 24 hrs ago.
Screen is 9CA7 from manufacturer 0610 and is just beautiful. No artifacts that have been described here (and elsewhere) in the forums.

Hi. Congrats on your nice screen. Would you mind determining the model number using the Terminal method described in this thread? I'm sure people (including me :)) would love to know who manufactured it. Cheers.
