I love my iMac and if I bought a laptop I would only buy from the MacBook family. But I have to say, you can get a damn fine laptop these days for under $700 -- granted it'll be a Vista machine (blech) but HP and Sony are making some nice machines.

Great to hear Apple is getting aggressive on price. Every student wants a MacBook, but when you get to the box store and dad has decide between $800 for a decent Vista laptop and $1200+ for the entry level MacBook (with less hard drive, less memory, and no DVD burner) -- it's pretty hard to convince dad it's worth it (even though all of us here know it is).

I agree, it is so hard to convince someone to purchase a new macbook with their price!

First, because I own a Macbook. I would also like to buy a higher-specced Mac notebook that is actually competitively-priced. I prefer the OS. But I'm not willing to pay current prices for it. I like to talk about what I want to own. And that's a powerful Mac notebook that doesn't fuss about looks or weight or thickness, and that is priced similarly to an equivalent PC.

As I said earlier, you're simply not Apple's target market. You're not going to find what you're looking for from Apple, so best to look elsewhere. Sorry.

Argh. Specs do not a good computer make. Given an identically spec'd Thinkpad to the Gateway, the Gateway is a piece of ****, as is an HP. Or Dell.

But you guys don't care about that, right? Just the shiny numbers? :D
Actually, if you look around, that Gateway has great reviews, a good warranty, ect. People are completely happy with it.

Find out about a computer before you make fun of it. I've spent many hours researching that model personally. That Gateway is like what I want. I'm currently giving Apple 6 months to a year to make a similar model for a similar price, or I'll buy it. I prefer OS X and will give it a bit more time, but not forever.

I know some people that work at apple and I know that the Intel processors that are in the mac are different from the intel processors in the PCs.

Intel makes Special Superior processors for the Macbook that are specially ordered and designed not to crash. The ones designed for vista are designed with older specifications that are made to crash more often.

Also the nvidia graphics card is a different version than what the model number says. On the macbook, it is a Secret edition that performs better.

hahahahahaha :D WHAT THE F*** ARE YOU SMOKING?

I've already found out about the brand, which in my first hand experience doesn't have good support. But thanks!

Yeah, I bought 2 dells, an HP, and a gateway, and they all broke within a month.
Let's just say this was true... Ever heard of a warranty? Every PC manufacturer offers a minimum 1 year warranty.

On the dell, the monitor exploded and I gut cuts on my arm to prove it. There is still a scar.
Again, assuming this was true... You think these are normal occurrences? Monitors, regardless of brand, just don't up and "explode"

The hp processor got fried too. Same with Gateway.
Sure they did. :) Macs use the same processors as PCs... (intel)

That is why i pay $800 (Not $1000 like beric says) to buy a macs. It is simply a good deal when OS X has NEVER crashed on me once in all my years. I have never known anyone that has experienced an OS X crash.

All the vista users i know experience crashes about 20 or 30 times per day.
You are just full of it. Crashes 20-30 times per day? Exploding monitors? Fried processors?

haha. :D They need good leadership and a restructuring of the company if you ask me. They need a visionary like Steve Jobs to regain what they have lost if you ask me. :3

ha,ha,ha, too late for them they NEEDED Steve back in the late 70s...it's all going to be downhill for them now, and good f. riddance too.

LOL. Well said. :D

Specs ARE important in a computer, not just the design.

It's like BMW vs. FORD.

The BMW has a better engine.

Just like Macs have a better processor and hard disk drive than PCs. The processor is special made INTEL. and also NVIDIA graphics.

On a PC you'll probably get AMD and Ati graphics.

Yeah that's a bunch of crap, this atrocious repulsive bloatware that is vista has a lot of things going against it but it's the most stable thing ms has produced in a long time.

I'm sorry, but I have to call this what it is: An utter lie.

20-30 crashes a day? You NEVER had a crash on OS X and neither has ANYONE you know? You either had your mac for a VERY short time, and have NO friends owning a mac, or you're lying through your teeth.

Secondly, Macs – especially their portables - have dwindled in quality in recent years to the point they should be considered the Dells of yore.

In summary: If you want a properly made laptop today, there are plenty to choose from, but Apple is not one of them. Meself? I prefer Thinkpads. And when this one dies, I will make my next computer (a thinkpad) into a dual boot hackintosh.

OS X itself are so bloated that Apple themselves see the need to slim it down considerably: Snow Leopard.
OS X is buggy as hell since the advent of 10.5 and the focus on the iPhone and Touch.

Jesus dude, they're the same processors, with the exception of the Air. nVidias are all over the place; HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc. Why do you think it's more than just Apple having issues with the 8600m?

Seriously, please stop now.

Is This The Product Transition?

OK, so here's my two cents, most of which is simply agreement with what others have said so far.

Apple mentioned a "product transition" that would affect quarterly earnings. Now it's fairly obvious that the earliest we would see a Mac tablet is Macworld in January, and technically that is a new product line, so that takes out that argument. We've seen the new iPods, none of which are revolutionary, or would affect profits in any way.

I think, based on what I've read so far, is that the product transition is going to be a dropping of the Macbook Pro (name, not product line), and merging the two notebook lines into a single product lineup. I think that this would could as a product transition. Prices would be cut (that's where the loss in quarterly earnings comes in). The Macbook line would appeal to both entry level and professional users based on the options available.

Also, with both the Macbook and the Macbook Pro expecting to make the shift to aluminum, could it be possible that they are simply referring to the same line?

Here's my predictions for October 14:

- A new Macbook line, with a discontinuation of the Macbook Pro name
- New Cinema Screen Displays
- The "Brick" that is rumored - A New Mac Mini?
- Speed bumps to the iMac

Whether or not Apple introduces everything in one event is highly unlikely I guess, as they need to save something for Macworld. But those are the products that are all long overdue for a refresh.

As long as I get my new Macbook Pro (or high level Macbook?) I'm happy. :D

A PC is like a Ford that doesn't look great, but performs like a BMW.

A Mac is like a Ferrari that looks great, but performs only like a Ford.

See the difference?

For those of you who are saying that it will come out tomorrow.....I GUARANTEE you that if these rumors are true and that it shipped from the factory today, it would take ALOT longer than 1 day to reach the United States, let alone all the retail stores. Think about it...these are coming over on cargo ships from China, they have to clear customs, be put on trucks, driven across the entire country...and you think all this can happen in a day?? To be honest, I think the October 14th time frame seems right on

And today's the last day of the college promotion......

Ahhh, Good point. I really hope they come out soon. I was going to order a macbook over the summer, but didn't because I was on this site and read that new ones would be out soon. So I have been waiting so long. I am ordering mine the first day it comes out! :D

Exactly! And like the Ford, the PC breaks down. :D

this should be a good piece of kit. The aluminum will help them get he size to one inch, help with discoloration, and durability. The reception thing is over hyped. My only real hope is that they offer matte screens.

Hahaha!! ON a mac you get OS X INSTANTLY without having to install it.

on a thinkpad, you will have to look for at least 2 hours to fix the audio problem to get it working smoothly. Believe me, i tried it. I have hackintosh on several computers, and setting it up is NOT an instant thing. the first one i made took 5 hours.

Man your so full of ****....

You know, realistically, is there really anything PRO about any laptop? If you want to do power computing, don't most people go to their desktop? Just asking.

There's nothing pro about the Macbook Pros. They are worse than most anything out there in their category, and yet cost more than anything out there. Just look at the graphics card. The processor and RAM are similar to most anything else. The HDD capacity is less, standard.
