The hard part too is when will the $300 off be over? This week? After the Monday conference? It's hard to be on the fence knowing that the sale could disappear whenever.

FYI, a BB rep online just confirmed that the $300 sale is ending March 27th.
March 27th would be around a month or so this thing has been on sale. Almost unheard of unless BB was told to help clear inventories for something else.

They had the apple watch on sale for nearly 2.5 months....if not longer. The pro's have been on sale over a month now.

I'd say it's pretty hard top argue against there being some sort of updates on the rMB next week. The timing seems way too perfect for there not to be a revision. Just comes down to how cheap does the current rMB have to be before you chose it over the new model coming out.

I personally would love to see a 14" model come out with Skylake. I'd be sold at that point. Thankfully, if the 27th date is correct, you'll be able to see what happens next week and make an informed decision.

I think everyone would be surprised by anything other than the $1299 we saw last year. I still think that 25% off that the current rMB is selling for is hard to argue against.

some individual stores still have open box excellent MacBooks, 909 out the door. Or even less with a movers coupon - is a pretty good value.

I agree. I previously missed the iPad Mini 3 sale from best buy and ended up purchasing from amazon. For $50 dollars higher. When I saw the $300 dollars off the MacBook 12. It was time to pick one up.

There are three things that speaks against it:
- It appear to be an iOS event.
- No rumors at all surrounding an update.
- boltjames says no. :p

On the contrary, I expect the same entry price. It would be quite uncommon for Apple to lower the price of a Rev B product.

That is exactly what I said. I expect it to be the same entry level price of $1299, so the best buy prices of $999 are even more tempting.

True, but those discount prices are ridicules..

Even if they will release a new gen. next week it's not like you're buying a dinosaur computer today and those potential new generations will never get sold as low as 999.- . I mean Apple would maybe do a minus 99.- or minus 199.- but that's about it. You'll still buy cheaper as the current model is sold at 1299.-

+1

It's not like you buy a dinosaur computer today if Apple would release a second gen. next week.
If that second gen. will get released Apple will probably lower its price but never more than -199,-. So 1099,- will be about the lowest price for a new Retina MacBook second gen. If you buy today you still have discount and a good computer.

Head went back and to the left! Second shooter! Over there! Behind the Grassy Knoll!

Retailers in the United States are allowed to run products on sale as much as 49% of the time and at full price as little as 51% of the time.

The record keeping is done annually and is audited by regulatory agencies for compliance at the sku level. It's up to each retailer to decide on which dates and for how long each sale promotion runs on a given item.

Translation: There is nothing significant to glean from Best Buy's markdown strategy on the RMB other than they are a struggling retailer who had a brutal Christmas and March is the slowest month of the year for Consumer Electronics. It's post-Christmas, post-Super Bowl, and pre-Back To School. You cold hold archery practice in a Best Buy right now and not hurt a soul.

Thanks for accounting and business class 101 genius.
Can you explain why the SP4, Surface Book and othe competing devices aren't being discounted $300 by BB?
If they're (BB) struggling wouldn't this strategy work on other devices?
Maybe when Apple releases the the new iPad next week BB will discount it also.

I guess we'll wait and see until we make judgements about a second shooter.

Other than best buy, there are some amazing deals to be had on eBay. I bought mine brand new sealed for £550 in January.

People may have gotten one for Christmas and found that it wasn't for them due to lack of ports, keyboard etc, however as a secondary machine, the rMB is perfect.

You're welcome. It was necessary.

Sure, because Best Buy didn't over-buy them. You see, retailers take the majority of their markdowns when they own too much inventory. Looks like the reorders placed by the planners and buyers on the Microsoft products weren't as aggressive as the Apple products. Dead inventory, cashflow reductions, aging product, these are all metrics that Best Buy needs to manage very closely.

Well, the Easter Bunny is due that week to so you've got that going for you.

So is this similar to what happened with Cabbage Patch dolls? Time to get over yourself BJ. For you to say that BB over-bought a computer that's almost a year old is conjecture. No different than people saying the MacBook will be upgraded next week. If I was a betting man though I'd bet that a 340 day old laptop is due for a revamp, very soon.

I don't think it's "they over bought on an old notebook" type of markdown. These are expensive pieces of inventory and they order and price carefully as a result. Apple products have a very thin markup for retailers- so I'd imagine Best Buy is even more careful with Apple quantities and prices.

Apple is either updating the rMB soon or dropping the price and keeping the same tech for a while. Either way, something is up for Best Buy to offer 20-23% off.

The only reason I can see them overbuying is the initial shortage. They were probably selling them as fast as they were getting off the trucks. This really had less to do with the macbook and best buy and more to do with apple. If you wanted one early, they were easier to find at best buy than at apple.

Yes, they were hot and flew off the shelves. I recall BB offering some decent deals on them in the fall when supply caught up to demand. I find it odd they over ordered so much to have excess supply now. Especially knowing it's coming up to anniversary.

I honestly think there's little to it other than they weren't selling well at $1299 at BestBuy. And when they list them at $999 they sell quite well.

The apple watch was probably the same way. When they were offering $100 off the SS models they were probably selling them like crazy.

Similar sale, and it had nothing to do with "over-buying". That sale even lasted a few months.

Whether a hot product, a lousy product, or an average product, the act of retail store inventory replenishment is a human exercise and subject to the same emotional and irrational process one goes through when deciding on what type of latte to purchase in the morning.

RMB History Lesson:

March 2015 - The RMB is announced.
April 2015 - The RMB trickles out to retailers.
May 2015 - The RMB begins to ship in limited sizes/colors.
August 2015 - At Back To School, the RMB is finally in stock in all stores.

In May of last year, I myself looked high and low for a Space Grey 1.2GHz 512GB RMB right here in New York City and I could not find one in 15 NY Metro Apple Stores nor online nor on eBay or anywhere else. I finally found 1 unit, just 1, in an Apple specialty store in Manhattan and finally was able to get my hands on one after weeks of looking. The Apple Watch is what Apple was focused on, the RMB was a passenger.

The point? The RMB isn't "a year old notebook". The supply chain was only fully stocked by late August/early September at the earliest. I know. I kept going back to Apple Stores to check out the Watch and paid close attention to the lack of availability of the RMB.

The RMB is 6 months old, maybe 7. Apple isn't going to touch it, it's a baby, it's a newborn. They'll focus on the Pro and Air revamp's, there's real money to be made there.

I may eat crow, but you need a thread when you are wrong since you are so confident :)

It may not happen in a week, but by WWDC it will.
