I need portability though.....And I haven't the money for an iMac or Mac Pro on top of a Macbook. I'm going to college, for God sakes! I need all the money I can get
Get the cheapest MacBook, install a faster hard drive (7200 RPM/SSD), and install more RAM.

A half clock speed multiplier or two isn't noticeable in the real world.

Unfortunately Apple do not make a machine that fits all those requirements. I actually don't think anyone does - heavy video editing needs decent hardware behind it, as well as good software...

For heavy video editing, it is probably going to have to be one of the more expensive Apple laptops or an iMac...

Alternatively, get the best you can afford or as suggested above, put up with any compromises and when your films are earning money, get the machine you want!

You definitely need a Macbook Pro. Firewire 800 is a HUGE benefit for video editing. The extra battery life and glass trackpad make it really worth it.

Well this rumor changes completely my opinion on a possible Tablet device. Right now my computer is a Mac mini, which meets my needs just fine except for portability. I'd love to have a Mac laptop, but I just refuse to pay that much money for any computer. That's why I've been so interested in a Tablet thinking I'd get my portability at a cheaper price. But if they come out with a new, perhaps smaller and cheaper MB; I will be very interested. I'd love to see a 12" MB with no optical drive (I have a perfectly good external drive already). Make it smaller, lighter and cheaper (by $100-200) and I will buy one.

Cheaper!

Remove some things and make it even thinner.

Thinner plastic and 1.5 hour battery life. This makes a cheaper MacBook.

It would be nice to see a design that isn't prone to cracking.

Well, you could basically make a unibody but with plastic. You'd still need a metal frame, but the plastic parts surrounding it cut just be top case (including the rim), bottom lid, display lid, hinge cover. I wonder if they'll bring the glass display and trackpad to the plastic Macbook line though.

Is there a site that sells replacement shells that you can do yourself?

Yeah, you can get the palmrest assembly on eBay and other places. Still, it's a bummer having to shell out money for what in my opinion is a design flaw with the earlier case lips. I'm wary that the problem is likely to keep resurfacing no matter how many new palmrests I put on there.

I'll be keeping this in the family, though, so I'll probably just leave it as is, until it's obsolete or it dies. Lesson learned: I will never buy another RevA Mac product again. I got bit in the butt back in '99 with my Yikes G4, and again in '06 with my MacBook.

That'a what I decided on already! And I was already planning on upgrading the Hard Drive to 500 GB and the RAM to 4 GB!

I always thought the MacBook Air was a bit of a prototype for where they wanted to take the MacBook line. Making something nearly as thin as that for a low price would definitely keep people interested. Some would definitely sacrifice some power for something thinner and sleeker.

DING DING DING! We have a winner!

They would only call it Macbook it you can fold it like a book and it runs Mac OSX.

I can actually imagine iPod Tablet as a name, and it being something like the iPod touch, just bigger.

Check out this Nokia Netbook and try and tell me this doesn't dazzle you:

The comments below the article say it all. Apple should be doing this. So trim the current Whitebook down to 10.5 and make it a new netbook. Those who b***h about netbooks being too small or whimpy, that just forces them to trade-up to the 13" MBP, which makes Apple money, which is what they seem to care about.

Good to see this is finally getting the revamp it's needed for a long time. Hopefully they can drop the price point below $999.

I got the Rev B Nov. 06 version. Thanks for the info. $120 for the palmrest, though. Yikes, I will have to mull that over. I love my black Macbook for its Firewire and it's still speedy enough compared to current models.

The tablet is likely to use the same amortize payments method that the iPhone uses to give the appearance of a lower price. iPhones costs $500-600. Would be strange if a 10" tablet came in with a real cost only just a hundred, or so, more. More likely that it too with have a higher total life cycle cost and a larger gap between it and the iPhone cost.

The less expensive, Mac OS X computer is going to be a revised MacBook.

I don't see them ditching the Optical Drive in the Macbook unless they also offer this in the Pro series too. This is my top coveted feature.

Whatever this turns out to be (as long as :apple: does it they way they do everything) will be the replacement for my iBook G4... the current macbook just never did it for me... also, no way its anything under $899... that sounds just about right for an apple price cut.

different colors in alum might happen, no way it happens in plastic... thats old news..

...apple if your listening... give us a black alum macbook! its fine to leave out the backlight keyboard, optical drive, and SSD except for bto add ons... and the specs cant go any lower than the current air.

Moreover, if they do this, it'll be in Oct as last year. They use the back to school to clear inventory.

Hope the polycarb stays. better wifi and more durable. Idk why people have such a boner for thinner stuff. Its thin enough. The thinner you make it, the more problems you have. i.e.-weak uni hinges-limited HDD options-heat problems...

Funny both my wife and I had the polycarbs, durability is not a key word we would in any way use when compared to the unibody MBP's we have now. Also both systems run by far cooler, have more robust screen hinges way more hard drive space that is considerably easier to upgrade 1 screw versus the many that have to be removed from the plastic system let alone the tiny space one has to get to said hard drive.

I was hanging out in an Apple Store the other day, waiting for a genius on my Airport (I moved and it broke during the move), and by far the #1 complaint from the people that were looking to buy a laptop was price. They didn't seem to care about the 13 inch price, they cared about 15 inch and 17 inch mac pro prices. If I were Apple, I would do something like Dell's Studio line, using the wide screen 14 inch and a 16.1 inch screen. It settles the niche in between too big and small, and its a macbook so most people will not be overpaying for power. Make the super drive optional, and use the nvidia 9400, just like the Dell Studio 14z - you got a great machine at $799.
