The internal Blu-ray players for a desktop are down to about $125 and less now, so the cost is a lot more reasonable. It makes sense that they would make the upgrade soon as there is more impetus to do it with only one format left. If all these rumors are true, it would seem that Apple is about to do a fairly significant update bringing the whole line of notebooks to the latest in technology (and beyond in some cases). Pretty exciting!

Interesting. I seriously doubt the validity of this rumor but I would absolutely love to be wrong. I just don't see there being much of a chance considering the Mac Pros don't have them yet but I could see Apple adding them in to both simultaneously. They would have to be playback only drives though, not for burning otherwise they'd be far too expensive.

You forget..."The spotlight turns to notebooks." Perhaps this is more than just an event slogan but Apple's marketing slogan as well.

Also, didn't Kevin Rose already say Blue-Ray support was coming in Mac OS X 10.5.6? We're only at 10.5.4 so far (unless am I by chance not up to date?) So unless Apple wants to release 10.5.5 on Monday and immediately follow up with 10.5.6 on Tuesday, one of the two rumors are going to be proved incorrect.

10.5.5 was released mid-September.

Actually I'm at 10.5.5 right now. So 10.5.6 would check out and could come Tuesday.
(**knocks on wood**)

I've always said the problem with the Apple TV is that a lot of people don't already have 1) an HDTV 2) video content on their computer worth streaming. So, an Apple Television makes a lot of sense. I have a 20" tube tv, and will eventually have to buy a new one, and buying an Apple Television would make sense for me. And once people see what you can do with photos etc, it will catch on. I wonder if this is what Apple talked about when it said it would lower margins on a product transition (Apple TV to Apple television set). Because when it comes to TVs, I think Apple will have to follow the market. As nice as it would be to have Apple TV integrated into the set, you're still mostly buying it for the screen which is a commodities market.

Re: blu-ray, why would the MacBook get this before the MacBook Pro (or is Pro implied).....and will they let the iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Pro linger without it?

Also does blu-ray drive mean you have a superdrive plus blu-ray watching ability or can you burn blu-ray too?

Blu-Ray would be awesome! I'm going to invest in the mid-top range MacBook (depending on price and spec) and I really hope they include Blu-Ray. Would be a winner.

As for the TV...quite a big market for Apple to jump into. And to be honest, I don't think they'll succeed. Although the same was said for the iPhone. But I really want to see the actual current Apple TV devloped more. Whatever they produce for this TV, they should include in the Apple TV. Be it a DVR or just the whole software experience, and of course the remote!

If the Mac Books have a BD drive at the current price points, that would be a HUGE victory for Apple. A high powered, dual core laptop running OS X with BluRay? AWESOME!

They said they would "support" Blu-Ray drives, NOT have Blu-Ray drives. I still believe only the high end ($3,100) Macbook Pro will have a Blu-Ray drive whipping with it.

Blu-Ray yawnsville.

About time, if this is true, but I was just looking at my PS3 and realizing Blu-Ray is still quite unnecessary for 99% of the video and computer market. It would be NICE, but it is definitely not something most people have jumped onto as of 2008. I suspect the DVD companies will start the push to Blu-Ray around 2010, and then they will push to flash drives around 2016 or a couple years after 2016.

Apple should launch a Apple Tv brand to compliment the current media home setup. I have actullay betted 100€ with my friend that by end of the year 2009 there will be a TV from apple.

Nothing spectacular, a nice lineup of 32",40" and a 52" inch white tv´s to go with the atv or mini.
Propably just rebadged samsungs or LGs with a small design twist. And priced about the double than competitors.
They would have practically no extra expenses apart from the design and they really could make themself seen in the electronic stores.

Waiting...

Well, that was my guess from a week ago...

Damn,if apple is really moving the TV direction, well hell, then only the heaven is the limit.
Next step after the consolidation of the os and the lineup is gaming.

Gaming,but with a twist..

Yes it will take about an hour for this to sink in I believe, but also do people realize that you're not getting the full potential from BR on a 13.3" MacBook screen?

10.5.5 was released mid-September.

I have Software Update set to check daily...

... I'll just run it manually right now to verify...

and...

:(

My signature is a complete lie. There's a lot of stuff not up to date. Front row, java, Mac OS itself... there's already an iTunes 8.0.1? and remote desktop client...

In understand that difference, but I was adding that the price isn't as prohibitive as some here think. It is possible within their current price points to include it as a CTO option on MBs, but I would expect it to be standard on MBPs.

Meanwhile, Jason Calacanis founder of Weblogs, Inc, claims that Apple is working on a networked television.

This stupid rumor again? I really can't see apple selling big ass TV's, at the most licensing the aTV tot other manufacturers to build them in.

btw, building in a Apple-TV or iPod is practically the same, it would be the next step to world domination in digital content. :p

This is funny.

Macbooks and Blu Ray = lol.

Seeing as Macbooks still have the combo drive available as an option, its a big jump for Apple to offer blu-ray lol. I think it would be the pro sides which would get it first.

If :apple: came out with an external Blu-Ray drive then I would buy it on the spot. Dvd's don't look so good anymore. All the mac laptops have to good of a resolution and everything looks muddy.

Lol, I don't trust that Software Update, I check MRs to see if there's updates usually, you should have a security update available too that was released recently
