3G in the laptops? Either make it free or have a version without it. I do NOT want to be paying a monthly data fee for my laptop. I'm already paying enough as it is for just my phone.

Just because your laptop is 3G capable, doesn't necessarily mean you HAVE to subscribe to a service plan. It would just be an extra feature your laptop had, which in your case, would be inactive/unuseable :)

The reason I think this is false is because Shake was publicly discontinued by Apple a few years ago. They aren't making any updates to it anymore. They said they were going to eventually release a successor based on Motion but they haven't yet.

It's been a while for FCP so this would be welcome. They have fully adapted FCP for the "Nehalem" processors and that would be great.

A built-in 3G modem would be pretty neat. For all I care, you would insert the SIM card like you'd be upgrading RAM, i.e. by removing the bottom plate. This would make stealing the SIM card a bit harder too.

Or how about this: you pop out the space bar and the SIM card slot is built into the underside of the plastic cap with the signal cable going into the chassis.:p

USB dongles always stick out and on a Macbook, it would block the second USB port too because the dongle is so large. I wonder if the reception would be great with the antennas in the aluminum display. There's a reason the iPhone 3G has a plastic back. Then again, the you can fit much longer antennas in a laptop.

AT&T stores could sell subsidized Macbooks with a contract.

Stick quad cores in the MBPs, put firewire in the unibody macbook, everyone is happy, clear definition across the lines and firewire for those on a budget (but who want the more stylish Alu)

P.S. Matte screens option on the 15" would be a bonus.

A few fixes in Logic Pro wouldn't go amiss, I'm not expecting version 9, I'd also like to see Soundtrack Pro working as a wave editor for mono files, because it's still an epic fail in that regard at the moment :)

Edit:

Ooh I know this will annoy some, but how's about BluRay Studio Pro to compliment DVD Studio Pro, or do those who need such a program have to wait to see pigs fly first?

ppl keep pointing this out, and yet the rumours keep persisting. I personally think Phenomenon (as it was codenamed) will simply be another app in the suite, which won't be any more powerful than shake was (as most of the shake dev team left a year or so after the announcement), but will be based on motion and will be less buggy. It is hard to imagine Apple killing off their market leading compositing package at a time when vfx are becoming increasingly ubiquitous in just the sort of productions that FCP is so popular with.

Seems unlikely, but 3G would be great. I wonder if 3G would work when I take it abroad.

Damn !!!! Already ??? If that's the case, i will have to resell my 2.93GHz Unibody MacBook Pro to get this new one.

What exactly is the point of getting a new computer every single revision?

Doubt it will be anything major. I hope they come out with a higher capacity battery.

My gf's 2 year old macbook has a higher battery capacity than my 2008 unibody.

Maybe it's a Mac Tablet.

Although I love the idea, I would be sooooo mad if they did that, because my unibody MBP would feel useless next to it.

LOL! Yeah, I second that. I really hope Pika was being sarcastic.

Edit: An update to the line != new product. A mac tablet would not be an update, it would be a whole new product line.

Having 3G built in makes a lot of sense. If they are clever, they will just provide the hardware, without a contract. If you want to get a sim card on any contract, just pop it into your MacBook and enjoy mobile broadband without a silly USB adapter, remember the days when that was the only way to get wifi?!
I agree. I think this goes hand in hand with Apple's 'request' that ATT have its 3G system upgraded by June. For the foreseeable future, multiple capabilities will have to be part of any laptop or mobile device.

Any guesses on the Macbook Unibody upgrades? Is it likely we get something slightly faster than the Geforce 9400M? Not too familiar with NVidia's GPU roadmap right now.

I imagine there would be just a CPU bump from 2.0 to 2.2 GHz on the base model and from 2.4 to 2.53 GHz on the high end Macbook, maybe some Hard Drive upgrades too (from 160 to 250 GB on the base model and from 250 to 320 on the high end).

I just want as much power in a 13" Mac Laptop as I can get to make it last 3+ years as my sole computer.

Please oh please oh please let there be a small price drop (its happened before) so I can get the backlit keyboard when I get my macbook with the back to school sale!

I agree that it will eventually come out and am not arguing that point. My point is this source of theirs is implying that Shake will get updated, not that its successor will come out. Which means they don't know the backstory and probably don't know what they are talking about. Thus the story is false.

Plus WWDC is just the wrong place to announce software geared toward the creative market. WWDC will be all focused on Snow Leopard and iPhone 3.0. That's more than enough to fill that conference. How would they devote any time to their most important creative application suite? How would they even fit that in? "Hey developers and people here for the IT track of the conference. Let's go over all the new features of an entire application suite that barely any of you use but somehow WWDC is now our dumping ground for every product we haven't gotten around to announcing an update for yet." I thought this is why Apple got away from trade shows and conferences for the most part so they aren't stuck to these dumb show based time frames. (though WWDC makes sense for OS related announcements since you have people heavily involved with development for that platform there to learn about it, not just buy it)

Since they aren't showing at NAB then they would be doing a web based announcement of the update or a small little press thing. If they end up not doing it this week which looks more and more likely they won't while NAB is going on, then they could do it any other time. I just don't see the benefit to announce it at a show that is not geared in any way shape and form to that product.

No 3G in Macbooks for me please. Thats what we now have tethering for. :D

If you think about tethering with the iPhone, that is not officially supported, it is against your contract with AT&T, and there is probably something that allows them to charge you something ridiculous $1 per Megabyte (and I mean Megabyte, not Gigabyte) if you get caught using it.

But 3G built-in would be pointless for me. I can get a USB stick for £30, with pay-as-you-go charges whenever I actually need it (for example 1 day 500 MB = £2, other prices for 7 and 30 days, with no mad charges when you exceed the limit). Most of the time I am either at home or at work, and I don't need 3G in either place.

Yesterday I ordered a top-spec MacBookAir from Apple's store. Expected delivery on Monday the 27th. Calculating 14 days ahead takes me to the 11th of May.

I have until then to discover whether there'll be a MacBookAir update, and therefore whether it's in my best interest to return the Air and sit it out until the refresh has occurred.

Take into consideration how important it is for you to have the air now vs wether or not you can wait comfortably.

Don't expect anything crazy, most likely just a small mid cycle spec bump.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be nice if your £30 USB stick was inside your laptop so you could always use all USB ports and never forget to bring it?
