I finally have figured out how they are going to charge Apple prices.

May 9:

Apple announces MacBook, and stepping up of MBP and MB to Merom, which Apple, by previous arrangement, have ready to ship, or at least ready to order. Perhaps an announcement about timetable for iMac CPU upgrade as well.

This would justify the prices they are going to charge, and it would truly wow all of us. The question is whether Apple can pull it off. I think we were all truly surpised by the early rollout of Core Duo in January, so who knows! All I know is that I would order a MacBook tomorrow if they did this, and they would dig it all at E3 as well.

no. that would be waaay too much money. Like $1499 at least. Apple needs to keep it $999 or $1099.

not gonna happen

Apple will have Meroms for sale the same day that HP/Dell/Lenovo/Asus/Acer/eMachines have them. May is too early, August is the projected date.

Intel doesn't give certain customers exclusive first rights to sell its products.

Look back at the Yonah announcement - all the vendors showed their stuff at the same time. Except Apple, which delayed a few days for MWSF.

My bet is May 23rd

Because Apple sent me a 36 euro coupon that expires on May 21st and iBook shipping is still 24 hours...

I don´t think Apple would give any discounts on a product that will have more demand than supply when released.

Wow it is true! i just took this picture outside, if you look closely the cargo contains a white square, this must be the new intel! yeah!

3.3GHz, two cores, 1.3GHz FSB and 4MB L2 cache? Holy Cow Batman!!

Mustn't screw up with prohibitive pricing.

Yes, definitely needs to be affordable to attract mainstream customers & potential switchers! With laptops generally flying off the shelves from every store & far out-selling desktops these days, this Macbook release is a BIG ONE for Apple. In some ways far bigger than the prohibitively-priced Macbook Pros. Cock this one up & much of the progress made in recent years will be lost.

Here's hoping no combo drives &, aside from some inevitable first-batch blues, no dodgy graphics.

Here's one. The 17" macBook Pro was released without a media event. It just showed up on the website. So there..nya nya nya

Although they did make the announcement at NAB, so they had the new machines on hand to show off.

It's monday. With no announcments/invites of any kind, is it still likely that they'll announce tomorrow, would it just be a press release? And if they do, doesn't that make it seem more likely that the new computer is just an update of the last one instead of the radical redesign some have been expecting?

Perhaps The MacBook Announcement Is Low Key Because It Ain't Merom?

Perhaps The MacBook Announcement Is Low Key Because It Ain't Merom? That way Steve can brag about Conroe & Merom - Core 2 Duo, IE 64-bit - at WWDC going into everything from that point on. We are, after all, in a state of 32-bit retroland at the moment - a state I am sure Steve and all the engineers at Apple, as well as all the software developers, would have rather avoided if they could have. But the need for immediate speed improvements trumped the long range goal of an all 64-bit world.

Huge Find iBrainch

Congrats iBrainch in Chicago. And welcome to MacRumors. This is the best evidence I have seen yet to prove a new iBook NOT MacBook will be released Tuesday. Way to go! :)

"Hear about the most affordable iBook ever." Indicates it will start at $799 for Core Solo Combo.

$999 Core Duo 1.66 4x SL Superdrive.
$1299 Core Duo 1.66 8x DL Superdrive.

All Integrated Graphics

Just guessing.

The announcement can't be too low key. NOW is the biggest time for educational buying, and this is the model that is key for that market. They can't really go too low key, they need to sell a bunch of these, not give the impression that they are a stopgap and that people should wait.

And I doubt the MB will go merom for a while anyway, in the short term they can move the MBP to Merom and have that be another difference between the models.

Nice find. I like the mention of "the most affordable iBook ever". That would HAVE to mean a price drop, at least on the base model, wouldn't it?

For all we know, it could mean $949, I think $899 is the most likely. I do agree that if there is a price drop, it probably means Solo in the base model (along with other options being bare bones).

it is tuesday - open the packages!!!

...in singapore

so if there are any packages, open them!!! we all want to know

Not trying to burst any bubbles but that seminar has been an ongoing one.I receive the Apple lists for seminars and that particular one has been sent to me at least 5 times over the past 7 months. Each time saying "the new iBook".

im really hoping they're released tomorrow. not because they will finally be out, but because if they arent released then we will have over 50 threads like "apple sKrewed us ovar!" and sh*t.....

Solo Combo $899 to Duo Super $999 Still $48 Profit For Apple

I agree milo. I just don't see any clues of a press event anywhere. So that is relatively low key no? And I think you may be right about $899 rather than $799. They will sell like hotcakes anyway, so why lose $100 every time? $899 still sounds very low.

Those who can afford it, will opt for a $999 Core Duo anyway. And it only cost Apple $32 more for the Duo 1.66 GHz processor. Seeing Apple's cost between a Combo drive and a 4x SL not-so-Superdrive is probably around $20, they can still make an extra $48 on a small $100 upgrade from Solo Combo to Duo Super. :)
