For an $899 base model, I would take IIG. If I can get a backlit keyboard, 13.3" screen, and a superdrive for $1000, IIG are fineeee. Heck, I paid $1400 for my 14" laptop with XP.

That's where they'll make up the costs of having to give everybody a superdrive :p

Seriously, a 2" thick box would be amazing. I want one! the box my mini came in was HUGE in comparison...

I wonder how wide it'll be, since they still gotta fix things like a power brick in it, and at least some foam padding.

No Backlit Keyboards in MacBooks

There will NEVER be backlit keyboards in MacBooks for three reasons.

1. Heat.
2. Cost.
3. Differentiation from MacBook Pro.

I agree milo. I just don't see any clues of a press event anywhere. So that is relatively low key no? And I think you may be right about $899 rather than $799. They will sell like hotcakes anyway, so why lose $100 every time? $899 still sounds very low.

Those who can afford it, will opt for a $999 Core Duo anyway. And it only cost Apple $32 more for the Duo 1.66 GHz processor. Seeing Apple's cost between a Combo drive and a 4x SL not-so-Superdrive is probably around $20, they can still make an extra $48 on a small $100 upgrade from Solo Combo to Duo Super. :)

If there will be $100 difference with Core Solo / Duo, and Combo / Superdrive, I'd give that $100 with my eyes closed. I hope you're right and we'll see a $999 Macbook with Core Duo and Superdrive, at least that's what I'm only waiting for.

It says "new ibook" and it says May 10, 2006. I would say that is absolute confirmation.
but why are they calling it the "ibook?"...

Appleinsider now mentions about that event in New York on seminars page. It says this is also another hint for the upcoming Macbook this week.

That is total speculation. As I said earlier I receive Apple's seminar list and that EXACT SAME WORDING was used in at least 2-3 other email's I've received over the past 7 months. The only exception was the date.

This is no scoop at all.

AI also claims it's a scoop. Pretty lame since it was posted here first.

It was originally posted by ibrainch at 11:57 AM, and 3 minutes later at 12:00 by apple insider. There's no way that whole article was written in 3 minutes.

EDIT: ..and deleted less than 37 minutes later.

They have removed that news in 5 minutes, that's really interesting.

well the article is gone now....wonder why?

I'm guessing because they changed their mind and now think it's bogus.

For posterity, here's the article they pulled:

APPLEINSIDER ARTICLE said:
First on AI: Apple Computer appears to have inadvertently dropped another hint towards the release of its Intel-based iBook notebook successor, expected to be dubbed "MacBook" when it makes its debut this month, AppleInsider has learned.

After accidently posting links to a non-existing "MacBook" product page on its Web site last week, the Cupertino, Calif.-based Mac maker on Monday issued a notice about a May 10th seminar where customers can "hear about the most affordable iBook ever."

According to the posting, customers who attend the session at CompUSA's retail location at 420 5th Avenue in New York City will learn about the "specifications and features of the new iBook." They'll also "hear about how the new iBook is your go-anywhere digital solution."

The session, which is open to anyone who wishes to attend, is slated to run from 3:00pm to 4:00pm eastern time.

According to industry sources, Apple began manufacturing the new 13-inch widescreen consumer notebooks at its manufacturing facilities in the Far East a little over a week ago. These sources said the company remains on-track to introduce the new notebooks "this month" with the possibility of an introduction on Tuesday, May 9th via a small press conference at its campus.

The MacBooks are expected to sport Core Duo processors from Intel Corp., come in more than one color and include such features as a completely magnetic latching system, built in iSight video camera, and MagSafe power adapter.

Each MacBook is also expected to come bundled with Apple's Front Row and PhotoBooth software applications.

The new notebooks will also retain a FireWire 400 port, addition to two USB ports, and ship inside stylish retail boxes that are only marginally thicker than the computers themselves.

apple insider - article deleted?

I was just on Apple Insider, and they had an article with the heading saying something about a further leak of macbook info, but once i went to read the story it came up blank. When I reloaded there home page the article was gone!

Anyone know what it said?

Edit: oh right. thanks milo!

I told them about it, and then read what Peace said and told them it looked like a false alarm. That is why they took it down I think. Had it not been for Peace, we all would have been 100% of the new iBook LOL. Thanks Peace!

BTW, some twunt on the other board criticized AppleInsider saying that they had already read it on another board. LMAO. Memo to self: remember to email the New York Times and tell them that I already read about the Apple lawsuit judgement on the BBC this morning.

Package Designers Challenge - Smaller = More Profit

By making the boxes smaller, and you notice they are a lot smaller for the MacBook Pro, they can ship more in one airplane and lower packaging costs due to less material per package. So more profit and the ability for each store to keep more in stock on their limited shelf space. All adds up to more profit and faster delivery of more product to more locations. :) That's positive progress.

Not trying to burst any bubbles but that seminar has been an ongoing one.I receive the Apple lists for seminars and that particular one has been sent to me at least 5 times over the past 7 months. Each time saying "the new iBook".
Apple lowering the price by $50-200 on the new MacBook seems so unlikely since they raised the price on the Mac Mini by $100. Peace has confirmed this seminar has been ongoing for the G4 iBooks. Apple has already revealed they will be called MacBooks, another strike against this being written for the new Mac portables coming out tomorrow (or in May anyway). I'm still expecting $1099 on the low end. Anything less will be a pleasant surprise.

EDIT: ha, article pulled by AI. Here's the URL I have for the page: http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1728

You really are the NETDOG! :) That's cool, because ImAlwaysRight. New MacBooks tomorrow, $1099, all dedicated graphics, all core duo, you wait and see. :)

given the rapid-pace discussion, i don't imagine many people will see this post, but i digress.

i've been keeping up with the macbook updates for quite some time now, and i make it a point to try to read most of the comments in any given thread (it helps with the boredom at work, haha!).

one problem that i've seen is this strange claim you guys have that 'now is the biggest time for people to buy computers for school!'

forgive me if i'm wrong, but this is total bollocks. the majority of students at this time are crumbling under AP tests, college exams, etc. they aren't going around shopping for new computers. additionally, any parent who is going to buy their child a computer (especially one who is going off to college) sure as heck isn't going to do it right before the SUMMER post-graduation.

imagine...
'oh, yes, honey... of course we'll buy you a computer right now! you have two more months to go before school starts, and you probably won't use it at all except to get on myspace and maintain an anti-social front whilst we fund all of your illegal activities! wonderful!'
'thanks ma!'

notice the problem? i imagine that mid-june is really the educational purchase time, NOT early may. i sure as hell wouldn't want my child having his graduation party around a brand new, 1000$ computer.

oh, and for everyone who says that +1000$ is too expensive for students, bear in mind the discount... it'll bring it down to <1000$, potentially.

just my thoughts on the matter. :D

Don't get me wrong folks.I'm not saying the MacBook won't come out tomorrow.Just saying I've received those emails before..
It very well could be a seminar on the new MacBook and CompUsa just doesn't want to let out the name MacBook..Or something like that :)

I think you missed the point. AI's article said FIRST ON AI. Which wasn't true. What does your nonsense about the New York Times have to do with that? "Twunt" indeed.

Why? The mini got BT and Airport included on the base model, which was previously a $100 upgrade. The iBook already has both included. They didn't raise the price on the MBP 15 or iMac, did they?

Having waited the best part of a year for these babies, my heart jumps at any mention of a release.

But I really can't see it happening tomorrow, sadly.

I too received a voucher from Apple UK which expires on the 21st May - it's going to be in two weeks. It makes me sad!

Proof!!!!!!!

*cough cough* I'm am Apple employee... I swear. I work in an Apple Store. I'm not the manager, but I went in the backroom and took a picture for all of you. *cough cough* So it's true!!! There are hidden boxes and they definitely contain MacBooks!!!! Because I could tell from the box!!! INSIDER INFO!!!!! OMG OMG OMG!!!!! *cough cough*

But seriously.... I can't wait for the MacBook to come out. I've been unhealthily checking this forum to see what people are saying about once every 20 minutes. (but really, that's due to the fact that I'm studying for exams at the moment and that after tomorrow.. I'm done university... and I want a graduation present!) So MacBook... come to me!!!

Good points, whmees. Also, whether the base model is $999 or $1099 I don't think makes much difference ... sure there are some college kids who have a difficult time making ends meet and work their own tails off to pay for college, but I think most of those shopping for MacBooks have mommies and daddies who will pay for it whether it is $999 or $1099, whatever little Jimmy or Sally wants ... at least in materialistic America! Heck, you gotta have your priorities in order, and buying the kid the laptop s/he wants is surely going to be one of them...

You're just splitting hairs. You think "now" is ridiculous but late may makes perfect sense?

I've seen this time period listed in a number of articles for academic sales. And many of those sales are machines bought by schools. With all the bureaucracy, schools make their decisions and place orders far in advance. They need to get machines out soon or they'll miss being considered for these orders.

That was true when the Mini was introduced in Jan 2005, but later G4 revisions included BT/airport. The G4 mini I'm using right now has Airport and Bluetooth included, and I didn't pay $100 to upgrade to it.
