imalwaysright:

i think you hit it on the money. if there EVER was a computer that summed up yuppies, macs would be it. they go hand in hand with beemers and vacations at martha's vineyard.

and anyone who thinks this isn't the case is just kidding themselves. i visited quite a few private colleges before choosing mine, and lo and behold... the mac population on private campuses is huge compared to public schools. of course, it's really just a direct correlation of money earned to money spent...

You're just splitting hairs. You think "now" is ridiculous but late may makes perfect sense?

I've seen this time period listed in a number of articles for academic sales. And many of those sales are machines bought by schools. With all the bureaucracy, schools make their decisions and place orders far in advance. They need to get machines out soon or they'll miss being considered for these orders.

a lot of people look at people putting up christmas lights in october as crazy, but november is perfectly fine. a few weeks makes a huge difference.

i do admit, however, that i completely ignored the possibility that schools were buying these computers. but then again... since when did schools have up to date comps??

That was true when the Mini was introduced in Jan 2005, but later G4 revisions included BT/airport. The G4 mini I'm using right now has Airport and Bluetooth included, and I didn't pay $100 to upgrade to it.

You bought the base model? $499?

You also seem to ignore that these machines may be announced but not available (or at least not available in quantity) for a few weeks. People may not need the machines immediately, but I'm sure many are at least starting to spec machines out and make decisions.

Upgrading to BT/AE cost $70, but a mac at $499 was a steal.

Agreed Milo, for the academic institutions. But whmees was talking about individual consumer purchases. So which do analysts mean when talking about the "educational buying season," the school district purchases, or consumer purchases? I think they generally mean school district purchases, which would be happening right now as budgets are being created. Which is why we will see a May 9th MacBook release. ImAlwaysRight. ;)

Spec machines out and make decisions? What are you talking about? Most parents don't know diddly squat about the computers they're buying their kids. The kids aren't 'speccin' out machines because it's exam and AP time.

of course, these are just my friends. maybe your friends do things differently?

any announcement made this week isn't being done to dazzle students, or schools for that matter (again, because almost no school will maintain an absolutely up-to-date computer lab... or at least not concerning mac laptops). in a couple weeks, when students are released from school and at home doing nothing, sure... they'll start paying attention.

I bet the only colors are black and white. They'd be sure sellers, and would match the iPod lineup.

I'm still surprised there's no black iMac yet. That would look REALLY cool, the way Apple puts the color underneath the clear casing. With matching black keyboard and mouse.

all this talk about "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL TUESDAY" what do you think it is? A MACBOOK PRO 17" now on display :) watch... this whole ibook thing will be a joke and apple stores will have 17" macbook pros displayed on tuesday.

I believe you are 100% correct. 17" MBP Hot Plates along with a bunch "I'm the gay PC Guy" ads in the windows on Tuesday.

Quite probable actually..

All these rumour sites & everyone here, including me, will be biting their asses tomorrow evening.

i tried calling the CompUSA at that location to ask them about the seminar, but was unable to get in touch with an apple employee. the lady on the phone said she hadn't heard anything about it, but i got the feeling that apple keeps their stuff seperate, so she might not necessarily have been told of it.

anyone else want to try?

I think the last one could be very popular. I'm just very unsure about pricing/features. The second one is a better system but I'm not used to dealing with US$, do you think the extras are worth the extra US$300? It's too early/late for me to go looking at the store.

I don't want to offer the Core Solo on the cheaper model but if it's necessary to do so then so be it, what about the ComboDrive? I'd like to think Apple would be getting rid of the ComboDrive on it's laptops, there aren't many PC laptops worth their salt these days that can't burn DVDs and I'd like to think the MacBook would be able to offer such a feature even at it's lowest price, maybe a Core Solo, ComboDrive option at US$999 and bump the other two ones up $US100.

I dunno, it's 3:45am, I'm tired but not sleepy, been this way for weeks, not with anticipation or anything, just Uni stress getting to me. Hey, at least I should be wide awake if the store goes down tomorrow night. :D :D

dude, sorry about your problems, but going to a PC's not going to be better...every company (even apple!) has QC issues...so some of us get hit with a stinker. i've had my logic board replaced on my ibook g4 and recently have had my battery quit...it's part of being a mechanical device...sometimes it's not going to work. as long as you have AC, they will fix it. no need for suicide...

Don't think he ever said he was going to a PC, though can anyone really blame him if he did? Chronic software issues (which I associate with PC's)may be a pain, but chronic hardware failures can be agony. My now 9-month peebook itself's on its third trip (in as many months) out to Apple service, and I've been told at the G-bar that while replacement/refund is and will always be out of the question, I'll at least have 2+ more years of Applecare to rely on--or 2+ more years of monthly downtimes.

Not that I've become some reformed devotee of the Cult of the White Apple--I still think Apple has a great OS and I'm really waiting for their next desktop--but I think Legacy's point is that one thing he didn't expect from his ibook (or me from my powerbook) were constant service interruptions well before the machine's first b-day, and that he's expecting the best and better in the upcoming Macbook. I too am pretty excited about the Macbook, believe it or not, if only to see what leaps forward Apple's engineers and designers have been able to make.

Though Legacy, if you're looking for something sturdier but just as portable, I have had several notebooks that have lasted me years (software issues notwithstanding, of course) from the PC realm. If I've ever sent one away for hardware service, I've never had to worry about it more than once every few years. But they'll also never have  the same sort of mystique either.

Anyway, what I hope to see from tomorrow's (?) Macbook? On the higher end, at least, I don't see why the processor can't go up to 2.16 mhz. And if Sony can fit an nvidia 7400 in a 13.3" form factor, I'm sure Apple can do it with the same or the x1400--unless of course it's education market-specific. And it's just bound to look real cool. As for shooting over the moon, I'd say 7200rpm hard drives. :p

From Apple Insider

""an Apple seminar posting making the rounds touts a May 10th event at a CompUSA location where attendees can "hear about the most affordable iBook ever."

Though some tipsters have suggested the listing may foreshadow an introduction of new 13-inch MacBook consumer notebooks this week, it appears the seminar has been a reoccurring event at the Apple reseller ever since Apple introduced its new G4 iBooks.

According to industry sources, Apple began manufacturing the new MacBooks at its manufacturing facilities in the Far East a little over a week ago. These sources said the company remains on-track to introduce the new notebooks "this month."

The MacBooks are expected to sport Core Duo processors from Intel Corp., come in more than one color and include such features as a completely magnetic latching system, built in iSight video camera, and MagSafe power adapter.

Each MacBook is also expected to come bundled with Apple's Front Row and PhotoBooth software applications.

The new notebooks will also retain a FireWire 400 port, addition to two USB ports, and ship inside stylish retail boxes that are only marginally thicker than the computers themselves. ""

Once again.
The MacBook isn't coming tommorow!!!!!. Don;t get your hopes up..YET.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm confident it isn;t happening this week.

I really want a macbook to be announced tomorrow but I have a feeling that they would want a press event. Appleinsider has been pretty good about knowing whats happening with apple and they still haven't come out and said tomorrow for sure(besides that event thing) just some time this month.

I think(and that's all this is, just my uninformed opinion) that they will come out at the grand opening of the new york store. That makes alot more sense as the press is already going to be there and it would be easy to sneak the macbook in there. Of course we will speculate and be fairly sure its coming that day but its not like a completely seperate media event where you know a new product is coming. If they were to announce a media event we all pretty much know for sure that its a macbook.

But hopefully tomorrow it is macbooks as the following week I'll be 40 minutes from an apple store instead of 3.5 hours from an apple store(would like to see a black one in person before making my decision, still think I'd get a white one though)

It's not being done soon to "dazzle" schools, it's being done so schools will have a mac laptop to consider that's up to date and competitive. An intel update to the ibook is MUCH more appealing than the current iBook, not least for the ability to run boot camp. Not sure why you're so fixated on labs not having the latest. What do you think they buy when they need machines? It's not like they dig around for old ones somewhere.

So far, people are saying the 17's are cool enough for lap use. Let's hope they're all like that.

Now that, makes sense. Good call - I'll go along with that.

When's the store due to open? That's the big glass cube one isn't it?
