The best camera review person around by a lot, Thom Hogan, calls it "moving the cheese" when a manufacturer moves buttons or dials on a camera. Moving the cheese is generally a bad thing for photo UI because it at least temporarily reduces the efficiency of photogs who shoot tens of thousands of pix and then are forced to change how they do it.

Apple with its OSs needs to be hella careful when moving the cheese [I arbitrarily include changes to icons that are meaningful to operation] because it at least temporarily reduces the efficiency of all users. Moving the cheese should not be done just because some manager thinks it is time for a change. Moving the cheese should only be done for a very good UI reason.

Moving the cheese... I like that. And agree. Moving the cheese just because, is weak. There better be some damn-good justification for cheese relocation.

Do companies still exist that sell icon packs? Someone mentioned the ability to copy pasta to change the icon out. These packs were popular when System 7 and 8 were current, and I used to love to customize my icons.

Glad they decided to modernize this icon, but the perspective is screwed up on the new one. This is a basic drawing mistake and I’m shocked to see it from Apple.

Tim Cook is trying to put his control on everything, and erasing Steve Jobs gradually.

We've had longer with the crayon color interface, than the classy interface - and it all went wrong after the passing of Steve.

Don't mind the new icon design. But definitely it could have been better. Not sure whether Apple will change it further before the final release.

If Apple truly wants to reflect their modern storage icon, they should use: 💸, or 💰

In fact, go even more self reflective and use:

With a sound of Tim Apple saying “Ching Ching” when you open it.

Sad to see the old skeuomorphic hard drive go for a more modern SSD type look

The simple perspective makes zero sense. Look how the front with the IO (what are the three holes?!) is at the same angle as the old one almost, but the top is much more upright, unless the front side is angled it makes zero sense on the face of it.
