a question..did steve say a new version of iTunes was to be released today?

Not today. Last we heard at D it was going to be the next 60 days. So probably before the end of July. My guess is when they announce the iTunes Phone. I can’t wait until the quicktime video gets posted. I really want to see the interface for Podcasting and how they are going to manage it.

I don't get all you folks crying about 'no more PPC upgrades / I won't buy a new machine now, because it'll be obsoleted / etc.'.

Did you not pay any attention to the announcement at all? There will still be PPC-based boxes released alongside the Intel boxes, and you won't need a 'special' PPC or Intel version of any given OS version or software package; BOTH platforms will be supported simultaneously, and Apple will still be holding the reigns on hardware (i.e., 'yes', it's an x86 chip, but 'no', you won't be able to install OSX on just any old PC: there will still be OpenFirmware (as opposed to a PC BIOS), and Apple will surely implement some other method of hardware protection to prevent another 'attack of the clones'.). Think, for example, of the current G5 tower, with the ONLY thing different being the CPU.

So you're going to have the same software as you do now, the same Apple-designed hardware as you do now.... Only with faster, cheaper CPUs, and faster access to new technologies, such as PCIe(!).

And all this ASIDE from more apps, more games, more USERS, more market share, etc., etc. HOW IS THIS A BAD THING?

I hope you know that is a pretty spot on representation of how some of you guys are acting right now. Please go change your diapers after soiling yourself and come back when you can act not only rational but sane and mature.

Wow. So posting this was sane and mature?

But I don't see how that's different than today. It will still be a different design, and a totally different OS, i.e. the experience is something different altogether. If Apple can do it today then they can with MacIntel as well.
OK, different design, OS and a Apple ROM then...
The point is that the price difference will be very transparant now. People will see exactly how much they are paying for the design and OS...
Call me crazy, but I don't think that will be in Apples favour.

Apple need to get the info out.....fast.
You would be an idiot if you bought a new Mac without knowing Rosetta supports both PPC -> x86 and x86 -> PPC.

An idiot? Come one. This board represents maybe 5% of the mac community. Most people walk into the apple store not knowing jack about what apple is up to. Wait until they go buy their kid a game and its not supported. They won't be buying apple again that is for sure.

Wow

Just got in and clocked this...looked at a few posts, this is going of the scale for response.

Well it's out in the open now, and it doesn't feel so bad..hate that Intel jingle..but otherwise it seems sound enough. I'll still buy Apple stuff, whatever is inside.

Quite funny reading the responses, it's reminds me of a white racist bigot, whose wife has had a black kid, only to discover after the paternity test, he's really black in a white suit, and now he's got some adjustments to make.

Ummm...use it. It's fast as ****! It's still a Mac and still runs Mac OS X. That's all that matters!
Yeah I never got the mentality of people who refrain from buying things when they think or know something faster is coming.... IN TWO FREAKING YEARS. It's like their that dumb that they didn't assume there is always something better coming. IF they always had that mentality they'd never buy anything at all. Ther e has been and always shall be something better coming... GET OVER IT>

intel

Unfortunately, now we will probably have to put up with the annoying intel music with the logo at the end of every commercial and have a sticker on the front of the computer.

Ya know, siliconaddict, I like your style!!!! I seriously feel like i'm in a room full of high school kids who are indulging themselves in armchair 'CEOing' without looking at the realities of the business world. sheesh

If they buy their kid a game today it will be supported...

Prices will likely adjust downward to become more comepetiive when the new systems start shipping. Apple wanted to become more competitive in their hardware pricing and IBM refused to budge on their pricing to Apple (considering them a measley portion of IBMs business). I believe this financial aspect also fed into Apple's decision to change. Intel will likely offer Apple cost incentives for the switch. If there were no serious benefit to Apple, Steve Jobs would never have even considered the switch.
I was under the impression that the G5 chip was cheaper than the Intel chip?

Buh Bye. Don't let the door hit you on the you know what ...

Good. I guess you are going to buy a spark workstation then. Or maybe an Amiga. Or Maybe a Linux workstation. You thought Windows GUI was rough. :D
You'll buy it and you know it. Once everything settles and you see some performance increases with dual cores. You'll get a new Mac.

My second biggest concern is with the compilers. It looks like they are going to be using the Intel compilers over GCC. Will these compilers:

1.) be free?
2.) be as ANSI compliant as GCC?

2. I'm pretty sure it's as compilant as GCC (but don't quote me on that). You might have some issues, though, since the Intel compiler doesn't implement some things that GCC do.

The Intel compiler is probably the best choice from a speed point-of-view, but I'm also curious if it'll be free. It's usually not (unless you develop open source Linux apps). And there's always GCC (which make better x86 than PCC code anyway).

Bookmark this page.....In 2008 everyone is going to be singing Apple's praise for their smart move. You people are sad.

This is the best move Apple could have done and for those who are saying they will never use Apple again. Shut up. You know you will. You will be right there with everyone else oooing and awing at the dual core PowerBook Pentium M's at 2Ghz. You will be impressed at the 2Ghz Mac Mini that will probably come out at MW '06. You will freak at the dual CPU cual core PowerMacs at 4Ghz in 2007. So please stop. You are acting like a bunch of babies.

Well said. Ditto...

So, what are you going to do, then? Buy up a lot of the old hardware and use it until it breaks? Switch to Linux? (Which runs on Intel chips... never mind!)

This has really got to be getting to Jobs, I bet he is mega-pissed at IBM/Motorola. Going to x86 is probably not something he WANTED to do, it is just out of necessity. He didn't look too convincing with the "hug" with the Intel guy. Although I DO know a LOT of PC users who say they would switch to Mac OS X in a heartbeat if it became available and was as fast as Windows (read: games).

So where does this leave gaming? I want to know this, as it is a big reason so many people suffer with Windows instead of a Mac (me included). Are we finally going to be getting gaming machines? -JB

I can see bill gates smiling now as the two companies merge closer together

Maybe he'll buy an Xbox 360...

I can't believe my luck. I bought a Dual 2.3 G5 PowerMac on Thursday. What the hell am I supposed to do now? Send it back and wait another year? Anyone in a similar situation?

Yeah. I bought mine last month. I'm not upset by it. I'm 99% sure this machine will be supported for at least the next 5 years. I'll worry about it when programs stop being made for it. Until then, I'll enjoy the many programs I'm currently running.

Ultimately, here's what I think. The more Apple keeps OSX processor-independent, the more chances Apple can switch back if/when necessary (especially if code tweaking proves easy enough).

bloat refers to all the unnecessary things that are actually tied into the OS - Internet browser, media player,
Oh, you must be refering to WebCore and QuickTime, right?

Will those stupid reasons for bashing MS ever fade out? Any OS that does not have an HTML browsing engine or multimedia framework for third parties to use isn't worth a penny.
