Why do I feel like Apple just lost something?

What happened to the innovation?

Hope you prove me wrong, I've got what'd you say - two years to wait?

Oh please... would you rather them stick with IBM after they have proven that they are unable to keep up with the pace that Apple fans demand? All people do is bitch about how the G5 is only up to 2.7ghz.... so Apple does something about it and all of a sudden people complain about how they already miss the great fire of a processor known as the G5. You will never be satisfied.

It is a double edged sword with Mac fans.... They claim that Mhz means nothing, but then go apeshit when apple releases a new powermac with a slight speadbump to the processor. If I were Jobs right now I would have given up on you folk years ago.

I think I have an idea of how the Japanese Submariners felt at the end of the Second World War. Surfacing to find their glorious Emporer had surrendered and they would not be allowed to die honourably.

I really enjoyed these forums the past couple of years. But this is the end of it for me. Wow, it suddenly feels like such a waste of time...

And here's the problem, all this time you thought you were fighting something, it turns out you were just using a computer. I honestly have no idea what you are talking about, the end? What was a waste of time? What exactly has changed? You really need to sit down and figure out what's important in life, it sure as **** isn't what kind of CPU is in your computer...

Steve Jobs has his computers all about class and design. I wouldn't bet on the sticker thing. Steve may have worked out a deal with Intel that avoids the dreaded "sticker" on the box. Time will tell.

The reason that most Intel vendors put on the sticker is that Intel PAYS you to do so......

Take all your snobbish, elitist, snide, minimalist, and effete mentality and stuff down your garbage compactor. It's time for to Apple hit it big with OS X! It's time to move forward.
Sounds more like an Intel elitist remark.

Give me Mac OS X on any chip, I don't care. If I am running Mac OS X I'm happy.

Apple doesn't do anything for YOUR benefit. It does things for the benefit of Wall Street and its interests. (Apple has been courting the film industry as of late; plans to create an iTunes-like video store are in full swing. Now connect the dots.)

You can boil this all down to 3 letters:

DRM

Say it slowly to yourself: DRM. NOT speed, NOT "wider compatibility," but hardware DRM. THAT is what the forthcoming generation of Intel chips are all about.

You think it won't be there? Then you are truly deluded.

Remind yourself of this post in a year's time when you've spent 4k on a new Intel Mac and find yourself unable to rip a CD/DVD, or transfer an mp3 to a firewire drive.

May I ask why you think this?

You may.

As a last ditch effort to save their business. It wouldn't work of course but it would come to that.

I don't really see how Apple's developer base can grow as a result of this Intel deal. I think most people might simply end up switching to Windows as a direct result of fewer programs than ever available for OS X, which might happen as software developers figure out they don't need to develop for OS X anymore as the hardware is the same as what Dell uses and can run Windows anyway.

If Apple hasn't regained significant computer market share by now, they're not going to in the future. At least now they have a two-front niche, which keeps the loyal user base happy, because of their uniqueness and perceived superiority, and the company somewhat profitable (iPod excluded). Moving more mainstream might result in a smaller base of loyal computer customers and developers.

I don't see the iPod maintaining long-term growth. It's a fad. Apple must retain uniqueness to survive, even at the expense of market share.

If I were Apple and forced to abandon IBM, I would do everything in my power to prevent Windows from running on Apple hardware.

Will they?

Get it through your heads... YOUR DELL WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN OSX!

I've read some articles on the web... and as we all probably know.. you CAN build an apple pc.. but at a huge cost. Unless, (likely) apple puts in a BRAND new chip that wont be available on markets.. it'll be pretty nice to custom build my own PC.. AND run MAC OSX

to those of you who think software developers will be intel exclusive:

FOR THOSE SCARED THAT THEY CAN'T USE INTEL PROGRAMS ON PPC...........
“We plan to create future versions of Microsoft Office for the Mac that support both PowerPC and Intel processors,” said Roz Ho, general manager of Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit. “We have a strong relationship with Apple and will work closely with them to continue our long tradition of making great applications for a great platform.”

“We think this is a really smart move on Apple's part and plan to create future versions of our Creative Suite for Macintosh that support both PowerPC and Intel processors,” said Bruce Chizen, CEO of Adobe

yes, hybrid programs. don't count on adobe and m$ office to be the only developers doing this. i'm planning on buying a powerbook this week myself.

Phil Shiller did announce that OSX will still be Mac specific...

that doesn't make any sense. windows has nothing to do with this. your not processing the information correctly. i wouldn't make any important decisions within the next week....unless this is a chronic condition you have. if so, ask people for help in processing info and decision making.

seriously...can we stick with the facts and try not to confuse people with such rubbish.

Grow up already

For all the negative people venting spleen - stick with your current G4/G5 's because if Apple didn't swap to Intel then your Powermacs & Powerbooks would still be running at the same speeds in 2007..

Imagine that in 2007 a Dual G5 2.7 - When the rest of us are diggin into a dual core 5Ghz - see ya PPC zealot losers...........

The intel move is like moving from G5 to G6 so how the hell is your investment lost - dual binaries will still allow software to run on PPC machines!

Put an Intel Inside Logo on my Mac and die.

Com'on IBM, hear the pleas of the unwashed hoardes. Is IBM just going to give up on the 97x like that? No Power5 derivative? WTF

Is it just me that gets the apple page not found page when going to either:

apple.com/quicktime/qtv/wwdc05/

or

stream.apple.akadns.net

I get redirected to www.apple.com/streamfile.html but it's the apple 404 page being shown. Any ideas? Thanks all.

You guys that are down on this are quite delusional. But thanks for all the entertainment :)

This is fantastic, but Intel High End Chips Do Not Run Cooler.

I am on top of the world Apple finally made the jump. Intel makes great chips, but if anyone believes that they run cooler than the G5 is mistaken.
(Only the Pentium M's run cooler)

I have 3.2 & 3.4 Pentium machines & they are like mini saunas compared to my cool running AMD 64 bit machine. They both need huge AlCu cooler radiators on top of them to dissapate heat & run at low temps. But they are smokin fast at After Effects renders & Audio Processing.

OS X on Intel is going to be fantastic if its with Dual Core (Two processors with HT if its able to utilize HT | Effectively the multiple ghz of 4 processors running side by side)

BTW; Does anyone know what the first Apple machine next year is expected to be released with Intel inside?

Yeah I can't imagine they'd eliminate it completely.
Mark my words. The x86 macs will use no BIOS as we know it. The motherboard will still be proprietary and there will only be a small chance that the northbridge will be intel supplied. Apple will be doing everything in its power to make sure that there are enough hardware differences in the x86 macs to make sure that any MacOS designed for x86 macs will not run on generic x86 pcs.

Apple have betrayed us all never again will i use a mac

This isn't a betrayal in any way shape or form. Apple has changed chip sets before and will again. By making themselves chip independent they gain a lot of leverage over supplies. Expect this to be more so in the future.

I don't really like Intel's chip architecture but what is more important is the user experience is still going to be the same Mac OS and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines (for programs that follow them - most do).

What worries me is I dont' see the Intel architecture having as good a future - improvability - as the G5 and family. But, I think Jobs will handle this by simply being as independent of the processor as possible. Very doable. After all, you don't expect him to lock down to hard drives or monitors from any particular vendor.

Right this way all you Apple Snobs and Mac Eletists ... here's the door -- watch out for that first step --- come on move it out. Need to make room for the next generation of Apple and Mac users .... they're all excited about the possiblities of new products new technologies and new deals.

he won't have to, Especially if the new Powermacs run on DUAL 64bit Xenon processors, at or above 3 GHZ. ;)

Read the benchmarks. Your dual xenon is on there and according to the chart the G5 blows it away. One way or the other we are getting lied to severly.

it totally agree, AMD is whooping Intel. Intel's processors don't run that cool. Don't let that fool you, they run so frikken hot. AMD's are cool, quiet, and fast. - I hate intel becasue of the 20KB L1 Cache and 2MB L2 cache, whereas AMD is smart - 64 or 128KB L1 Cache and 1MB L2 Cache - tons faster.

Intel is making a lot of progress in cooling down prescott. The latest processor steppings are MUCH cooler than the original preshot

Pretty much. I just joined the Apple force and got a bloody MINI! It's not about speed. This is the nicest computer I have ever owned hands down. The user experience is fantastic. Keep in mind I come from a "do-it-yourself and build-it-yourself background and ran Gentoo Linux for crying out loud.

It's so nice that everything "just works." What I love about Apple is the software, NOT the hardware. The group I do feel bad for are the small developers, but seriously... they own Macs and they'll upgrade too. In the interum, that's what Rosetta is for.

As I said before, this is pretty much a good thing hands down.

What if?

If apple has had this for "5 years"... wouldnt we be MUCH more satisfied if they actually came out with the "new" powerbook?

Cheers,
Ini

maybe I'm crazy, but this is possibly going to push me into getting a g5. I'd been waiting for the next big jump in powermac performance, dual core blah blah blah. But if this means only incremental updates in that mythical "powerpc pipeline", then it's time to get G5 performance from now until 2007. Especially if the price drops to around $1500 for a mid to hi-end dual. :)

To all the crybabys whose souls are bleeding and are feeling raped, I need the G5 as a (get this) tool, and with this announcement, I can rest a bit more assured that I'm not going to waste my money on a g5 when it would have been better spent on the G6 which is right around the corner.

(I live in audio production, where multiple machine setups are still a necessity for complex setups. And I hate multiple machine setups.)

And guess what, if he had made this intel announcement with a dual core 970MP machine also being unveiled, I'd happily buy that machine now - for the performance. Whatever is shipping in 2007 is so irrelevant to my production needs now.
