"Surley they cannot have such a black and white no return policy."

Sure they can. Why not?

"Being that being unable to return a product purchased is completely UNHEARD of to me I had no reason to check the fine print."

It's unheard of TO YOU, that doesn't change the fact that it is common. Analogy... if I'd only eaten at McDonald's, I'd be appalled when I was expected to tip at a restaurant. An extra amount paid to the person serving would be UNHEARD OF to me, because I'd have had very narrow experience.

Not a big deal, you didn't do you're homework, you're overreacting, and you're first reaction was to slam the company for posting common policies outside your experience. Happens a lot on the internets!

it's more like you take a bite out of that chicken sandwich and realize it's really a fish sandwich. I mean McDonalds doesn't have a return policy or exchange policy so you shouldn't get them to fix the order. Just say tough crap right? Come on dude get real. Go read my post for example

Just to clarify did you read this (about the return policy ) or did you speak to someone at MacMall ? Surley they cannot have such a black and white no return policy.

I would also give apple a call and explain the situation to them. Maybe they will let you return the product directly to them if you are not happy.

Also I hope you enjoy your new iMac, I have the new 20 and I don't know if my screen has a problem, I have never bothered to test it. It looks great to me.

Cheers
ss

I read this on MacMall's page and when I called them today to question why my tracking info is in limbo and they stated it shipped Saturday (and on Friday they stated it shipped) only to find out today it finally did ship around 6PM. At any rate, I questioned the policy with the CSR and she said that any problems have to be addressed through Apple and when I voiced my concerns that there may not be an amicable resolution and I have no recourse to return it she again told me to speak to Apple. At that point I re-iterated my concern and she said I could talk to a manager if I wish. I just told her I'd call back later.

Why are you concerned about Educational Pricing? You need to assume some personal accountability. First & foremost as a consumer you need to hold yourself accountable to making purchasing decisions based on research. This includes the product, manufacturer, retailer, and shipper. Based on what I have read, you went into this with very little information. You probably googled to find the cheapest price and then added it to the cart.

I paid what someone with an educational discount would have paid for their iMac directly from apple. Less Sales tax, too. But even you pointed out that's the consumers responsibility at that level.

Walmart doesn't offer support, but they'll allow me to return anything I'm dissatisfied with within 30 days of purchase. Which is my point entirely.

Also regarding returning the product. If I had to return it for defects (if I could) would not purchase another at this point. I'd continue to use my PC until I had reasonable belief that the problem(s) have been addressed.

Also RE: Use tax. Texas does not have a state tax return. Thanks to CanadaRam for divulging my whereabouts.

If I had done that I would have not ended up on MacMall.

I first was going to buy a previous generation 'refurb' iMac from apple.com, but upon seeing the price after taxes I realized I may as well get a newer one. I discussed this with a friend of mine that has been using Apple's as long as I have known him and he agreed for the minimal price difference the newer one by all accounts should be better.

Remember to look for dead/stuck pixels on any machine you buy.

Don't be satisfied with what looks good, actually hunt and be dissatisfied with your purchase.

I think I saw this same situation on COPS once.

Guy bought a watch, which turned out to be poor quality, and wanted to return it. The store/Pawn shop had a big sign that said NO RETURNS, and they offered to fix the watch. This lead to an argument and the man calling the cops. Ended up the shop was in the right. I think the police office said the laws reads: Let the Buyer Beware!

The OP apparently did as much research on taxes as he did on MacMall.

Texas does not have a tax return because it has no state income tax. There is however a sales and use tax, usually 6.25% on most items with another 2% imposed by some cities.

While the state does not generally pursue use tax evaders, the lack of a state income tax return does not mean that the use tax is not supposed to be paid.

Nope, you missed it. The sandwich analogy misses by several miles.

The OP didn't order an iPod and receive a Zune. In fact, the mail order store would have corrected that error based on their posted policy.

He thinks every store has Wal-Mart's return policy, and hasn't had enough experience in the world to realize that policies vary. Hopefully, at least he'll read the polices now and if not he'll "man up" when he makes a mistake and not try to blame it on the business.

Show me where I said there wasn't a state use tax? You won't find it! Because I never said there wasn't.

No, not every store has Wal-Mart's return policy. I knew that long before. Ie. Best buy makes you pay restocking fees on cameras and such. I'm not 'Manning up' to any mistake, because as far as I see it the retailer has an insane return policy on certain product. That's not my fault other than missing the 'fine print' before I bought. But since I've bought from eCost and PC Mall before with good luck and never had problems exchanging a defective product I thought MacMall would be no different, since they are all owned by the same corporation.

I'm done with this thread. I don't want to return anything unless I cannot come to an amicable resolution with apple on a screen repair if required. That's not that hard to understand. Can't fix it? I don't want it!

probably should

most apple catalog companies have a similar policy.
after you get it. its yours. even if its doa. you have to go
to apple

thats why i dont buy from them anymore.
i know buy all my mac stuff from bestbuy

Frankly, in my opinion, Apple has LONG used sub-par quality parts in their hardware. Take the first Mac 128. The I/O chips were MOS 6522 chips, which were outdated and known buggy by the time the Commodore 64 arrived on scene, which used updated and fixed MOS 6526 chips. See the wiki articles on the chips for more info on THAT regard.

In modern terms, they certainly use the low end where they can. Whether your iMac has a good screen or a bad screen, it's still going to have a Realtek sound chip, probably a Marvell ethernet controller (even some of the Mac Pro's have those POSs), and the fabled 2600PRO graphics card.

I have an iMac, and personally, I'm ecstatic about it, but the hardware inside is nothing to write home about in most cases. The OS, well...we know what makes a Mac. OS X is worth every penny you pay for the hardware.

Well I can live with off brand ethernet controllers. The Realtek sound is a drag, as the sound on my PC is realtek and it makes odd noises doing normal tasks not even associated with sound now and again.

My main gripe (and most peoples) seems to be the screen. Why cheap out on the component someone has to look at to use the computer?

I am a fool - I bought at MacMall !!!!

So my Girlfriend and I order 2 - iMac 24" 2.8 GHZ wireless edition. Her's is great, mine arrived with 4 DEAD PIXELS making a dot bulls eye in the center of the screen!!! It took me 10 hours on the phone with customer service, tech support and my sales rep to convince them that AppleCare will not fix this issue and they need to swap the machine. Success! Ah, NO!!!! The replacement they sent wouldn't boot up and there is a scratch on the base --- WHAT THE HELL!!!
I couldn't bear talking with MacMall again and having to convince them to take it back so my brand new computer is in AppleCare. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR ----- buy your next mac from a real store so you can walk in and exchange it. Apple said that they would have if I bought it there. The discount I thought I would get from MacMall wasn't worth the time spent on the phone convincing people that I had a problem, the money I spent dragging the iMac to the Apple Store and UPS and the REBATE FORMS ARE A PAIN IN THE ASS TO FILL OUT!! I repeat you are not getting a bargain from MacMall you are just causing problems if your computer you thought was an Apple turns out to be a Lemon. TRUST ME I FEEL LIKE SHOOTING MYSELF AFTER DEALING WITH MACMALL!! BOOM!

Well I've since this thread started boughten another iMac from MacMall.

Both times ALL of my rebates processed in UNDER 4 weeks. Both times I got Parallels for free or near free and a free printer as well.

I still don't like their return policy (see poster above for problem) but both of my iMac purchases are great. No problems to be had with the actual computers!
