There are also indications (stroughton smith) that you’ll be able to combine with handoff-like functionality. In other words, when working with an app on the mac, send it to your iPad, and it can actually launch the ipad version of the app and populate it with the app state so you can keep working on your ipad without being anywhere near the mac. With marzipan, many ipad apps will be identical code to their mac versions, which will make this much easier for developers to support.
Right, like working in FCP and sending it to the iPad to continue... Oh wait naah;)

Maybe I finally won’t need to install better touch tool on a Mac if they add snapping.
Do you mean better snap tool? Because apple added that feature like 2 years ago. It just sucks and is super confusing to use. I tried to get the hang of it but couldn’t. (If you were talking about another app then disregard lol)

Interestingly, LumaFusion 2 will be able to export to FCP. Not sure about complexities going in the other direction though.

What's also interesting is that people are reporting that editing h.265 HEVC is smoother and easier on an iPad Pro 2018 with LumaFusion than it is on a 13" MacBook Pro with Final Cut. This would be especially true if you're dealing with any Mac from 2015 or earlier, since those Macs don't have any hardware h.265 acceleration.

Meanwhile, on my 2017 (not 2018) iPad Pro, I can edit three simultaneous 4Kp30 HEVC video streams no problem, and playback without rendering is in real-time. Final exports are also near real-time.

As much as I love BTT, if those features are built in to macOS, it’ll go the path of F.Lux.
A little off topic, but I still use f.lux over Night Shift because it has way more options.

You're talking about being able put up two full-screen apps in split screen view. I use that and it's nice but quite limited.

BetterSnapTool is for managing windows in a non-fullscreen environment. It's a whole lot more useful in actual day-to-day usage.

Sadly, I cannot update to 10.15 because I need old software which gets no updates.

I think the reason it took so long is because the goal isn’t to just mirror, but to be able to hand off the entire application, and that becomes a lot more doable with marzipan and apps that have the same code on ipad and mac.
But since the application window can be sent to an actual external monitor, not just an iPad, it sounds like it doesn’t have anything to do with marzipan. Unless it sends to monitors and iPads differently? Lot of questions here.

What I don't understand is: if this could be an external display too... or if the iPad is used just like an external display (albeit with touch input... much like Duet) why would I need a function to "send any window of any app". Can't I just drag it over... like now?!
Why would his require a separate function?! This seems kinda counterintuitive.
I’m thinking this is not a straightforward extended desktop. For one thing, it sounds like apps might have to have to fill the ipad’s screen, possibly split screen. I agree, it’s a bit confusing.
What I’m wondering is if apps will individually have to support this for it to work, particularly to send to iPad. That might be bad news for me.

I might be in the same boat. But this is potentially a must-have feature for me. I’ll need to take a serious look at my situation if this happens.

Terrific! Skype’s support for screen sharing is not enabled on iPad. This new feature can make Mac, iPad and pencil, and Skype work together nicely for online tutoting.

Two different things. Both display and the marZipan angle.

This actually makes me a bit sad because the Luna Display guys have been fantastic. They really built a great product. Depending on what Apple's final implementation of this is like, this could kill their business entirely.

On a side note, I can't believe it has taken Apple this long to implement a feature like this. If it worked natively like a true second display, I have to believe a lot more mobile road-warriors would be buying up iPads or maybe even joining the Apple ecosystem just for this feature. Luna Display is about 75% of the reason I have an iPad Pro.
Probably Apple won’t work on this feature until they see iPad sales stagnate.

My 1st gen 12.9 pro will make a great second screen when required....Assuming it all works nicely. Looking forward to this.

I requested “continuity markup” (via iPad + pencil). Hope that’s in there too. Continuity camera in Pages and Keynote is so useful.

iPads should have been usable as input devices, and secondary displays for computers, from day one .

Apart from Apple's declared intention to keep iPads and computers separate , I think the incompatibility between iOS and OSX is too severe to find easy solutions even for functions as simple as the ones mentioned above .

Ha.. if this works as well (or better) than Luna then daaaamn.. Wacom can’t be too excited about this.

Luna is great.

Hell, if sidecar takes off I can see a good argument for a 20” iPad folio for artists. Paired with a Mac mini and you have a very versatile, insanely nice, (largely) portable system.

Awesome! Can’t wait for these features to be added.

If they are doing this, the other thing they really need to add is the ability to use an iPhone as a keyboard for an iPad!
Doing this is massively convenient (you ALWAYS have your iPhone available, but often you don't have your iPad keyboard available) and it frees up/keeps visible half the screen that is otherwise covered by the keyboard. No-one's claiming it's a perfect solution, but it would frequently be so damn useful!!!

This is a great new feature! Sure, 3rd party tools have accomplished that for a while, but now it should be well integrated with the OS, making it all that much easier to use. I like it!

macOS 10.15 will have a new feature that allows users to send any window of any app to an external display, according to 9to5Mac's Guilherme Rambo. The external display can supposedly be a monitor connected to the Mac or even an iPad.

Luna Display

The report claims this functionality will be accessible via a new menu that can be opened by hovering over the green "maximize" button in a Mac app window for a split second. The menu is expected to provide options for making windows full-screen, tiling windows, and moving windows to external displays.

The feature, codenamed "Sidecar," is said to be similar to the Luna Display hardware solution that turns an iPad into a second display for the Mac.

Users with an iPad that supports Apple Pencil will be able to draw with the Pencil when the iPad is being used as an external display for the Mac, effectively "turning the iPad into a Wacom-like tablet," according to the report.

The report claims Apple is also working on options that will allow windows to be easily snapped to one side of the screen.

As an artist... This really excites me. I have been using duet display, but that brings the whole desktop and all I really need is the app I am working with. Hope this come out soon!

I just can see Luna Display yanked from the App Store for "duplicating the core functionality" in 3... 2... 1...

There are a billion apps on the App Store that offer alternatives to email, calendar, messaging, and other functionality in iOS.

The apps that you are referring to were pulled from the App Store for using non-public APIs, not for "duplicating core functionality," whatever that means.

Maybe they can turn the iPad into a second keyboard for the MacBook.
We know the keyboard on the Macbook has been a controversial topic for some time - so for those of you who dont like the keyboard - you can now have a different keyboard! Just buy any iPad Pro model and get a super reliable keyboard!

Greatest macOS news I’ve heard in a long time! I was considering getting a Luna display adapter soon. This changes everything. If we get a better file manager experience for the iPad, it will be the best iPad year ever!

I highly doubt Apple will develop something like Luna, instead this has to be seen in the context like project Marzipan and Apple Arcade. When your apps can be run on any device based on their platform and screen sizes your device will scale to any sizes. Your iPad can be converted to a Laptop your when connected to a keyboard or PC? Or Maybe a AppleTV when connected to a TV. Or maybe even a game console? So your games can be played on the go on any screen and as fast. So this feature is not just a Luna "like".

Yeah I was thinking about that too. Would be awesome to use the pencil for whiteboarding during video conferences. I actually bought a small wacom tablet only for that.
