Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to say thanks (especially to: @justperry @TA 455SD) and everyone else involved with this project of upgrading unsupported Macs. I just completed getting my "clean install" 2012 Mac Mini setup with all my apps / configs / etc. on Big Sur, and so far everything is working great!

Hoping that future security updates and Big Sur updates go smoothly and we don't end up having to do a lot of rework to keep our old systems running properly.

Thanks again to everyone for your time and help, it is greatly appreciated!

But no one has the crystal ball to see the future.

Hi all,

I'm trying to install Big Sur on my Mac Pro 3,1 using the Big Mac script (thank you StarPlayrX).
I have created the USB Installer using the bigmac.sh script but, when I start from USB, the installer reboot with the follow kernel error message:

Code:
...
@ kec.corecrypto 1.0
In Memory Panic Stackshot succeeded ** Bytes Traced 13937 (Uncompressed 43680) **
Attempting system restart...

Please, anyone che tell me how to solve this problem?

Thanks

I patched mid2012 MacBook Pro by using Ben Sofa patched sur app. Can I install 11.1 directly from software update when it comes out?

Or,

Do i have to download 11.1 full installer, create USB and install over 11.0.1?

Some news about some of the BlueTooth problems experienced with the release Big Sur 11.0.1:

After sleep I lost the BT connection to all devices (on three different systems) and it was not possible to reconnect. After restart this worked, again.

This bug seems to be fixed with the most recent Beta 11.1
Additionally I can connect to my iPhone Hot Spot, now.

P.S.: Has anybody seen the first issue on unsupported systems, too?

My BT works fine(i have upgraded to BCM94360CS2). It actually works better compared to Catalina. With catalina i had bluetooth lag issues if my Wifi was turned on too. Now it works fine. One time even the watch unlock worked too. But thats broken now again :)

I upgraded from Catalina to Big Sur a MacMini 6,1 2012 using Barry's Micropatcher and following his Readme point by point. it took around an hour but no problem after some fast testing. The only quirk I noticed was a kernel panic after trying to run the new neural filters includes as beta test in the Adobe Photoshop 2021 version. I think its quite normal, these filters are CPU eaters and the 2012 Mac Mini version is too old.............Wifi worked also easily after applying's Barry's special patch as post-install. I didn't needed to reenter the password , it worked after the first reboot after using the Terminal with the sh script. The best big Sur progress is for me the traduction feature in Safari. 2 seconds to translate some US newspaper site to French was amazing..........Other features are purely cosmetic.

off topic:
I guess all our Catalina and Mojave related problems with upgrade BT cards were caused by the "legacy WiFi patch". There was a post on the BT thread this morning...

The micro patcher will not install any legacy patches if an 802.11ac card has been detected...

Another Beta 11.1 result:

Installing the patched CoreBrightness.framework to any of my iMacs blocks Safari there.

This is a consistent result from Beta 10 on (this was the first time I tried this). Is there anybody out who can confirm such an odd behaviour?

Ok, so what OpenCore should I install on my MacBook Pro 9,1?

EDIT: I tried 0.6.3 but that didn't go well... mbp9,1 booted to a black screen. I have macOS Catalina 10.15.7 ATM...

Found issue with OpenCore, I was using a config.plist for Mac Pro.
After installing OpenCore 0.6.3, I got the Big Sur upgrade prompt.
Upgraded without issues, it even runs 1/2 the temp. Catalina ran 80~90C and spiked to 100C, now constant 50~60C.
Only issue now is Wi-Fi. It shows on menu bar, On/Off seems to "function" but no network and in preferences it shows up with MAC address 00-00-00-00-00-00.

Any patched kext I can use to solve this issue? Catalina one seemed to work fine.

Has anyone had any luck with a 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 and Big Sur?
I'm still on Catalina. Once the Mac Pro 3.1 with a Metal cabable video card was a solid solution for Catalina, but at the moment, iMac and MacBook Pro from a more recent year seem to have better access the new OS. Although it is possible to bring computers from all these years to Big Sur, it has become more complicated again. The Catalina Patcher by @dosdude1 has an elegance and functionality that we have to be measured by. You start an installation program on a USB stick, wait about half an hour and then the job is done. The current initiatives (which are still at the beginning, mind you ...) are felt to be a step backwards, although all those involved are of course still doing an excellent job, no question about that. I don't mean that badly at all. But not everyone is a wizard in the Terminal, the individual steps, even if they are described, are sometimes difficult to decipher, especially if you are not a US / English native speaker. That's why it is still my position that you should make a financial contribution for good work. I would be willing to pay a well-deserved shareware fee for a GUI patcher that works in one go.

Opinions?

<Edited> Sorry - just realized your problem is wifi ... not ethernet ... so my original response is totally wrong ...
(and even then was probably wrong regardless)

This https://github.com/chris1111/BCM5722D/issues/2 seems similar, but the resolution of his problem seems ... unlikely ... and he was using Clover instead of Open Core.

This seems like the same issue also with Clover:
Is there anything in the open core logs that looks suspicious?

Just tried my 3rd attempt of installing on a 2012 15" rMBP, still getting kmutil error 25 on the patch_kext step, any ideas?

See post 5503 and related.
I also had the error 25 from kmutil.
Always old offending kexts in Library/Extensions were the reason.
In my case, leftovers from Catalina which entered into Big Sur by migration. I deleted the entire contents of this directory (taking a backup first) and patch-kexts worked.

This is not the first time a user is posting this error. No clear recipe available. Did you try a clean installation or did you try to overwrite an existing installation.

Only a wild (uneducated) guess: Try to delete the partition/container and do a clean installation.

Have seen the error messages before kmutil fails in your case with a successful installation several times now. So the "Error returned: <dictionary:...." lines are no indication.

You are a superstar! Deleted all the kexts, tried it again and bingo!

Typing this on the MBP in question, now happily connecting to the world!

For those interested in getting MacBook Pro 9,1 (mid 2012) working with Wi-Fi:
On post #8 I included OC 0.6.3 with config.plist and IO80211Catalina.kext with working BCM4360.

Hello to all,

Reporting a successful installation of Big Sur 11.1 on late 2012 iMac 13,2 equipped with Fusion HDrive, and installation of Big Sur 11.0.1 on Mid 2009 MacBook Pro 5,2 with a Samsung EVO 860 SSD.

—iMac installation process:

I used createinstallmedia process, and Barry K. Nathan’s micropatcher 0.5.1. to prepare USB thumb drive for installation of Big Sur 11.1 (installer 16.2.01) onto its own partition. Necessary steps for successful installation are well delineated on BKN’s GitHub page.

All system functions, including WiFi, operate without discernible faults.

—MacBook Pro 5,2 installation process:

Utilized creatinstallmedia process and @jackluke’s BigSurBaseSystemFix1 and BigSurBaseSystemFix2 to place and patch, respectively, Big Sur installer onto a USB-thumb drive.

Direct Link to juckluke’s BigSurBaseSystem fix zip: https://forums.macrumors.com/attachments/bigsur-basesystem-legacy-usb-fix-zip.1169210/

Direct link to juckluke’s PDF doc containing instructions: https://forums.macrumors.com/attachments/bigsurbasesystemfix-pdf.1666289/

Above items are on page 228 of this thread, in a post # 5692 by jackluke

I followed instructions deleniated in jackluke’s PDF document (referenced above); read instructions carefully, notably, the directive to unplug USB thumb-drive from the USB port after applying fix1, and plugging USB thumb-drive back into computer’s USB port before applying Fix#2.

Once USB stick is prepared, boot from it, by using the option Key on restart, and choosing said USB stick from the displayed selection of drives.

At end of boot from USB Drive a window will open, and display multiple items for selection.

Install jackluke’s modified open-core on the internal drive — open-core allows for booting when computer is stuck for any reason. It’s a great tool.

Then continue by selecting Hex3.app to allow BigSur installation on internal drive. (Note that other drives can be chosen, but process is different - read juckluke’s PDF instructions.)

Subsequently, choose install BugSur application icon. Wait for the installation to finish and follow instructions to create an account , etc.

Reboot to USB stick again, and apply three more modules, (all available from the displayed menu.)

1. BigSurFixes snapshot booting
2. BigSurFixes legacy USB
3. BigSurFixes graphical framebuffer (this module restores brightness control and allows sleep function to activate, among other interface improvements)
4. I disabled animation using free TinkerTool ( no affiliation with the program)

After applying above listed modules I did have an issue booting back into the Big Sur installation. That’s when open-core was invaluable; I booted from open-core, (selection of open-core is available when booting with option-key pressed). Then, I used ope-core generated interface to choose startup from Big Sur partition. Thereafter, I did not need open-core to boot into Big Sur.

There is no graphic acceleration, as expected, but system is usable for basic tasks; the range of tasks that may be usable may depend on CPU and memory configuration. Wifi and Ethernet were functional as well.

This is an abbreviated descriptive of installation process on Penryn C2D MacBook Pro 5,2.

Hope this post may be of help.

Thank you to all the developers and participants whose work and contributions gift the "old" Macs with a viable "existance."

I faced exactly same issue , lost all devices because of bluetooth connection missing. After this came up with display issues which I posted earlier and now still face display issue where computer hangs and screen becomes pixilated. This is also happening when i boot select catalina or high sierra which means major display card issue. So using my macbook air.🤔
