It’s not random. I think it’s an intentional design decision.
I tested it out - essentially when the number of menu bar items reaches a threshold, it increases the spacing so that they distribute evenly across the bar from edge of notch to edge of screen.

If there are too few (so that the spacing between each would be too wide) it keeps them neatly aligned to the edge of screen.

Not sure what the exact thresholds are but it’s very consistent and definitely not random.
weird, makes sense in a way.

I feel like they could’ve avoided this issue altogether by making the bezel at the top a tiny bit thicker and making the bottom thinner to compensate and keep the screen size.
I think they wanted it to further self validate their weird design choice, but IMHO, I hardly notice the notch, my only issue is with the menu bar icons and I hope they fix it future releases. The menu bar really seems like an unfinished product on the new macbook.

So I hope we can turn this weird behaviour off? Maybe through terminal. Or I may have to disable a menu bar app.

I really hate those spaced out icons because in some apps the menu options cross over to the right of the notch. It's an ugly look really.

They are not spaced out here because I haven't connected to an external monitor. But you can sense what will happen.

How did you get that Adguard logo? Mine is filled white.

Still waiting for USB-C external drives greater than 2TB to be recognised. Anyone else having this issue?
I just purchased a 5TB Lacie rugged portable drive and don't seem to be having any issues. 16-Inch MBP Max. Also just tried a 4TB version and it mounts. Sorry to hear you're having issues.

Hope they fix exporting to PDF in Preview. I have multi page tiff files and exporting only repeats the first page multiple times. Worked fine in Big Sur. I've had to redo a couple dozen documents after I noticed the bug and have to use an online converter for now

I see Im not the only one...

I don't see any change with macOS Monterey 12.1. The notch still obscures menubar icons. I thought it would move ones under the notch to the left of it but no luck on my Mac Book Pro 16". I can see them all on my secondary monitor but 8 icons are hidden on my MacBook screen. Stranger still it seems that given its width it should only hide 4 icons.

Any ideas as to why this is still happening for me?

because it's not fixed. it's still happening for everyone.

not sure what apple *thinks* they fixed here, but it's definitely not the menu bar.

Have you found any other solution to this issue and would you mind recommending an online converter? I have never had a problem like this, but have had to redo lots of documents. Lost lots of time and money. Thanks

Still not fixed in 12.3 beta 4 (21E5222a).
Apple asked me for photos of the issue back around 12.1 and I've updated the case again. Seems odd that they haven't fixed it yet. I don't even have a huge number of things on my menubar, although iStat menus is pretty wide.
