macOS 14 Sonoma on Unsupported Macs Thread

I have an old mid 2010 iMac that had Ventura and OCLP installed, I decided to try Beta 1 of Sonoma.
I was able to install it in place and run the root patches post install without issue. My second display works after the patching, WiFi no joy but no big deal for now as Ethernet is working just fine. Have yet to test BT but going to assume its the same as WiFi. Sonoma is running pretty well on this very old hardware thanks to the devs over at OCLP! A little sluggish here and there but that is to be expected for such old hardware with this new OS, kind of fun to mess with.

Beta 2 -> Beta 3 upgrade was available via OTA on my MBP6,2 and proceeded without issues. Booting OC 0.9.3 and patched with OCLP-AMFIPass-Beta4 (AMFI and Library Validation fully enabled). My expectations are low, so I'm thrilled that Sonoma installs and runs. Because non-metal patching is not yet supported, I'm using Firefox to post this status.

with Beta 1 and 2 I was able to download and install it just fine on my Macbook Pro 2016 but with Beta 3 it would download and when it was time to instal it would reboot and then show the no operating system logo then the font wouldn’t read contact apple support. I was able to go back to Ventura.

It is possible that my upgrade from Beta 2 -> Beta3 was successful because I have upgraded Open Core to 0.9.3 and I upgraded Acidanthera kexts to the latest Release versions. I still use the same Open Core config.plist generated by OCLP-AMFIPass-Beta4, but the underlying Acidanthera components are upgraded to the latest release versions. Also, I performed the upgrade with AMFI and Library Validation fully enabled (including injection of AMFIPass.kext 1.3.1). After the macOS upgrade completed, OCLP prompted me to apply post-install patches which applied without any issues.

Just to be clear, I do not have full non-metal acceleration (as expected) and I must use Firefox as Safari is non usable (as expected).

MBP5,2: installed 14.0b3 over b2 on external SSD, from USB installer.
Using latest OCLP 068n from 30 June as-is from source for EFI and post-install patches. No problems seen.

(i.e. external mouse/keyboard via USB2 Hub needed during install and before root patch as always with USB1.1 legacy machines. No WLAN, no graphics acceleration, Firefox as workaround for Safari which is not properly rendering)

The security of the 10.6.8 system is very good. The newer the system, the worse the security.

It is a natural evolution of the topic and an attempt to look at the core of the problem rather than merely react to the immediate challenges related to keeping unsupported Macs going.

The fact that the middle class will shrink in the coming years and you should expect to hear more from people who are not considered middle class. You can say that this is off topic but than again keeping unsupported Macs going has an obvious relation to this fact.

If you don't mind me asking, what's the difference between OCLP 0.6.7 and OCLP 0.9.3? Are they for different types of Macs? What I'm asking is there an advantage of one over the other?

As a general rule, OCLP is for genuine Macs that have lost support and OpenCore is so that PCs can have macOS the way Macs do. They are projects with different purposes but with shared developers and code.

Thanks--- That's good to know. Is there a section for which PCs can have a Mac os? I have a Lenovo Quad core i5 that I'd love to use as a spare Mac....

OCLP 0.6.7 contains OC 0.9.2. Open Core is the boot loader and Open Core Legacy Patcher is a GUI that simplifies the setup for specific Mac models that are supported by the developers. OCLP isn't officially supported on Windows machines although some people have got it to work.

OCLP has not announced official support for Sonoma yet.
At this point, I think that a natural order would be:
OCLP announces official support for Sonoma, and then after that, we all give it a try, and if it doesn’t work, then we ask “What am I doing wrong?”😉

Perhaps, just a bit more patience? It seems like you are putting the cart before the horse.

Sonoma on unsupported Macs via OCLP is not going to be ready for a while and even when it does become available, there are no guarantees about what or which machines will work at this time. Is there even a reason right now to be posting on this thread? I guess there might be if someone were to announce a viable alternative patcher to OCLP... or if someone wants to write a bunch of meaningless or off-topic posts……. or put up silly pictures?🤡....

iMac16,2? Are you using OCLP-AMFIPass-Beta4? If so, I have a couple of guesses that you can try (mods to your config.plist):
  • Add boot-arg -lilubetaall
  • Add MaxKernel = 22.9.9 to AirportBrcmFixup.kext
If those don't work and you still want to experiment (nothing wrong with experimenting if you're playing in a sandbox that you can afford to bork), you can PM me if you don't want to bother others in this thread.

Putting the cart before the horse still works in some cases.

EDIT: Just read your next post indicating that you did get it "working" without graphics acceleration and without Wi-Fi and without Bluetooth. Yup - that's where most of us legacy Mac users are with Sonoma. Just waiting patiently...

FYI, my non metal Mac which is a 2009 MB Pro I don’t use except for experiments ONLY (the thermals are horrible but it’s not a issue for me) and my iMac I only use for minor things like thing I can do my PC (I know Pc’s suck). I was only going to try the beta just to see what’s new and diagnose things that need to be improved like I do with the iOS betas every year.
