macOS 14 Sonoma on Unsupported Macs Thread

Hello ,
Is it possible to install everything without any USB drive? I would like to use a partition on the internal drive?
I have a MacBook 2012 with internal ssd running Catalina and would like to upgrade to Sonoma. Please point me into the right direction, thank you

As a safety net, I install betas (of macOS) and nightlies (of OCLP) only on external SSD. The internal SSD holds production versions, as the MBP11,1 is really for my daily work.
Regular Time Machine and frequent CCC backups, together with a USB installer for the latest OS (14.2.1) are the other safety net which should always be present.
Trying betas gives confidence that the MBP11,1 is good for the coming release of macOS.

A separate drive for Beta is good advice, one reason I chose the Mini7,1 is the ability to easily add a NVM-e 1TB SSD drive for Beta to augment the 1TB SATA drive for releases. 😎

Hi to veryone,

I have installed Sonoma 14.2.1 on my iMac 11,1 with the Graphic Card Kepler Nvidia K3000M, all work fine only the camera built in showes the image with a green filter. How can I resolve it? if I disable hardware accelerator it work fine. Thanks!

PS. Can I disable Hardware Accelartor only for camera built in?

Just looked at the problems you describe in #4,523 . I'm on a MBP11,1, Intel Iris 1536MB, 14.3b2, OCLP 1.4.0n from Jan 1st.

- clicking Memories (I guess it is "Rückblicke" in my German version) does crash. I use it almost never and didn't notice before. Sometimes I got notifications "neuer Rückblick" and these seemed to work OK. Crash log attached.
- Portrait pics - not sure if I look at the right place. "Personen" in German I guess, but then I don't know what Edit button. I can look further with some advice.

Photos otherwise works just fine for what I do with it.

I just installed Sonoma 14.2.1 on iMac14,2. Sometimes the window shadows disappear (after display sleep?). Is there a way to reenable them besides rebooting?

Edit/update: resetting NVRAM and downgrading OCLP to 1.3.0 appears to fix it.

I have used it many times over the last few years for multi boot with Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma and OCLP, but now here it looks like something has changed with either the latest Win 11 iso or possibly something with Sonoma or perhaps more likely latest OCLP (1.3.0/1.4.0n)
It installs fine as before but the resulting Win 11 install says something is wrong and restarts.
Any hints appreciated! Many thanks.

I have been using Bootcamp since macOS Catalina, I never had to touch this partition, at the time I was using Windows 10, the only time I redid the procedure was when I was on Big Sur, to install Windows 11 through Bootcamp, it goes up in BIOS Legacy on Air 2012 , and whenever I needed to reinstall Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, I only change the macOS partition, I never change the Windows partition, I only use OCLP to upload macOS, as Windows 11 starts directly without OCLP.

We have the same effect here on our office cMPs. It can be solved by running/starting facetime app in parallel to i.e. Teams or other video conf software.

Ex power user here, now retired but still doing some dev stuff for fun, friends and family which means I am still doing various forms of multi-boot on a number of computers, which in turn means I need a streamlined way for this and OCLP is it at this moment in time so I want Win and flavors of Linux also under OCLP. The factory Bootcamp process is not reliable in my experience with OCLP anymore but the WIN UEFI process that the Dortania folks have outlined for dual boot MacOS-Win10/11 works quite well in combination with their multi-boot instructions but I do tend to to have issues sometimes with some Macs being confused about GUID/MBR status which I have never been able to figure out. Windows sometimes opens the wrong Windows installer screen on rMBP 10,1 for example. If someone has a bullet-proof method for multiboot under OCLP/Sonoma/WIN/Linux multiboot I am all ears.

Maybe we're using different terminology. Regardless, the original statement "Having High Sierra and OCLP on the same disk has never been recommended." is incorrect. See here.

I don't want to hijack this thread but have a quick question. I set up OCLP on my friend's 12,1 A1502 in late summer---Somehow he updated it and it won't get past the log in screen. I believe he's on 1.0.1 OCLP and 14.2? I tried "safe mode" but it doesn't boot up. I want to create a bootable USB on our lunch break but we don't have Mac to do so only PCs---is there a way to create an installer any other way so I can get him on 1.3.0

This is not a solution. From the facetime app, the camera is increased by 1.5 times.

Hey everybody, still working on this one. I've definitely narrowed it down to the root patches. Here is what I've done to debug:

1. Reboot recovery from a macOS 14 installer USB

3. Reboot. I can boot 14.2 with no root patches.
4. Ran OCLP 1.3.0 and removed root patches (again for posterity just in case I missed something manually)
5. Reboot
6. Run OCLP again and install root patches.

On this reboot I get put back into the same behavior. macOS 14.2 boots, I can get to the login prompt and login to my user account, the progress bar gets to about 50%, I can see power management kick in since the screen dims and my keyboard lights up, I get a mouse cursor on the screen, but that's it. I can leave it for days and it'll never get past here. I am open to any suggestions on how to get this thing back up and running. Prior to this I was running 14.1 flawlessly.

This is a MacBook Air 6,2.

Replying to myself to provide a solution, albeit weird, if other users search this thread.

So after all of the above stuff, this is what I did:

1. Repeated steps 1-5 from above.
2. Booted the macOS 14.2.1 USB
3. Installed macOS 14.2.1 right over the top of my macOS 14.2 installation
4. Upon reboot, somehow, the system had a functional GPU, wifi, and camera! What!

So, yeah, this MBA 6,2 is up on 14.2.1 with working acceleration and everything. I do not know how or why the root patches got applied, but I sure see them in /Library/Extensions/. Weird! I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth though, and I'm elated my MacBook is back up and fully functioning. This MBA 6,2 is my daily driver. It was killing me having it down!

This has been posted from the aforementioned MacBook Air.

Just to add that Photos Memories:
- on MBP11,1 crashes also with 14.2.1 / OCLP 1.3.0
- on MBP5,2 (Nvidia Tesla 9400M) works, tried with 14.3b1 /OCLP 1.3.0.

Hello to all,

iMac 13,2:

Installed 14.3 beta 2 OTA using OCLP 1.4.0 nightly. Some items are occasionally missing from right side of the menu bar, and desktop items sometimes "disappear" after other application's windows cover the desktop.

The right side menu bar items can be restored (as reported by others) via "killall dock" command executed in terminal, while desktop items can be restored via Finder "force quit" command.

Otherwise 14.3 beta2 functuions well.

MacBook Pro 5,2 (Non-Metal, 2009)

OTA installation of 14.3 beta2 failed in last stages of the process. Rebooting in "safe mode" allowed to proceed to desktop, login into MacBook Pro and verify that 14.3 beta2 was actually installed. Process was glacially slow and ultimately I was unable to authenticate OCLP to install patches. Booted into Ventura and applied latest patches (OCLP 1.4.0n), but rebooting back into Sonoma installation failed at about 1/4 of the progress-bar's length. Waited until 14.3.b2 installer was available for download via OCLP, then used "Create macOS installer" function to build a full installer on USB thumb drive. Thereafter installation proceeded through several reboots, but 14.3 beta2 did fully install and is functional within hardware’s capabilities. Bluetooth 4.1 Dongle plugged into USB port of MacBook Pro 5,2 allows for pairing, and some level of continuity, and while Airdrop recognizes devices within range, and displays their icons in the airdrop window, reverse is not true; MacBook Pro is neither recognized nor listed by AirDrop services of other computers.
Bluetooth File Explorer works correctly when Bluetooth Sharing is activated on accessed computer and MAcBook Pro.
Photos Memories do crash when selecting a "memory" while "portraits(?)" (in Photos->People) work without isuuses under 14.3 beta2

I did search for this issue and found your posts! But that was right before you posted this final follow-up :) I had the same symptoms, 14.2 boot failing halfway through and safe mode not being accessible, albeit on a 5,2 MBA. Multiple attempts, always the same hang up.

With your post from before, I concluded that maybe troubleshooting this would take too much effort. Thus, I booted up network recovery with the intention of wiping it clean and install the latest officially supported OS.

I left it downloading the package but instead of returning to a screen with the installation wizard it had simply rebooted back into Sonoma. And it had succeeded without hanging! Weird!

I have since rebooted a couple times, all successful, but I also took the opportunity to install 14.2.1 immediately so I can't for sure say if network recovery affected something or if it just was a fluke.

Why OCLP and High Sierra should not be the same disk - OCLP can install a macOS to that disk which installs an APFS version which can be corrupted over time by the APFS installed by High Sierra.
 
Is something broken with Airplay in Sonoma 14.3b2 and OCLP 1.4.0n ?
I can't see the Homepods or TV displays on my iMac 17.1
They worked a few versions back.
