macOS 14 Sonoma on Unsupported Macs Thread

First of all I want to thank everyone involved in developing the patch tool to make this even possible. It had to have taken hours of time and dedication to do so.

Now a couple questions....

I just installed Sonoma on my Late 2009 iMac 21.5 inch model yesterday. It installed easily especially since it has a spinner hd and only 4gb of ram for now. Definatly planning on upgrading ram to at least 8gb asap and maybe an ssd if I find someone who knows how to install one reasonably in the iMac.

questions are

1. Does the iMac use laptop size or desk top size ram chips, I may have the ram laying around if its laptop size chips.

2. If I install an ssd drive, will the usb drive I made to install Sonoma the first time or do I need to make a new one

1) According to Apple you can install up to 16 GB RAM.
16GB For iMac (Late 2009), you can use 2GB or 4GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot. For iMac (Mid 2010) and iMac (Mid 2011), use 2GB or 4GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot.

2) If the USB is made for your iMac, it can be reused.

Also thinking upgrading the ram since I already likely have it would make a big performance boost. not so much in getting things to open but switching between tabs and such and having multiple things open at the same time. It works very well especially considering it has the spinning hd and small amount of ram.

typing this on it now and working perfect.

Also just fixed the mouse ball not scrolling both ways. never thought about running it on a piece of paper for a bit would work, but now mouse also acts properly.

Just press Ctrl and, without releasing it, swipe two fingers in an ascending direction across the trackpad.

very cool - never knew this - thanks for the tip. I enabled Accessibility > Zoom settings and it works well on MBP6,2.

EDIT: Tested and working in both Ventura 13.6.4 and Sonoma 14.3.

I left my iMac on overnight. In the morning, it was very sluggish. It took a long time to login. Many of the apps were sluggish in response. Video with Facetime and Zoom was not availalble. I was able to run the OCLP 1.3.0 "Post-Install root patches". It took a long time. I rebooted. It seems to now run OK. Hopefully, it will remain stable.

Just update from 14.2.1 to 14.3 using OTA on my iMac 14,2. It took around 40 minutes. Ran OLPC 1.3 patch afterwards. Everything runs OK.

I updated from OCLP 1.21 to 1.30 and now my iMac 14,1 does not boot anymore. The progress bar stucks at about 40 %, the cursor appears and I can move it but no logon screen at all. I also tried to boot into safe mode by pressing shift during boot but still same result. What can I do?

I have Sonoma 14.1 installed.

1) This Imac only has a 500GB internal hard drive which is original equipment. Is it worth my time, money and patience to attempt an installation of a new internal SSD, or should I just use a new external SSD as my primary drive? My cureent internal is working satisfactorily, but slow. This computer has four USB ports (I think 1.0) and 1 Firewire port.
2) I have Ben Baker's Hackintool app installed after Bluetooth problems when upgrading to Ventura a year ago. It worked great and I've needed after each upgrade of Sonoma. In that app it says I have Open Core 9.6 installed with 9.7 available. I have never installed Open Core individually. Thought it was automatically updated whenever OCLP was updated. Do I need to update to Open Core 9.7?
FYI, this computer is used for email, internet, Apple Numbers & Pages, Photos and Turbotax. Not used for gaming or even Facetime.
Your thoughts are genuinely appreciated.

All working well? You can wait for the OCLP 1.4.0 release that updates OC to 0.9.7.

Hi there, I've got Sonoma 14.3 running on my mid 2012 MBP. It's been crashing almost daily and was also doing so with 14.1 and 14.2.1. Also sometimes the UI gets all messed up and starts glitching out with unresponsive with flickering triangles.

I can't run diagnostics because it's missing from my system. I've tried booting diagnostics from a USB stick but it's not working, it's going straight to my system instead, I think because of opencore having the same name of "EFIboot". It also seems like I'm not able to to disable SIP because my system also doesn't have recovery installed, so it has to use internet recovery, and the old version of internet recovery doesn't understand "disable csrutil" on the terminal.

When you first experienced the frequent crashes in 14.1 (and subsequent versions of Sonoma), had you performed an upgrade from a previous macOS or a clean install?

What version of OCLP are you using to build the Open Core EFI and to apply the post-install patches?

Do you know enough to post your Open Core config.plist?

Hey all, got a quick question: I created a second Gmail account for me and someone to share for a specific service. Well, when I try to add the second account in internet accounts it errors with 400 on the google website after clicking continue after logging in. I was wondering if this was strictly a google issue, or if this was due to OCLP? Google let me connect the account to Canary mail, but not apple mail. My persona gmail account is in apple mail, and works fine, but i connected that, a long time ago before Sonoma, or Ventura were even a thought.

I'm thinking the Gmail issue is strictly google related, and not OCLP, but wanted to check.

This may help you decide, 2009 iMac running High Sierra (it's a beater) here are a couple of speed tests. One with an SSD I put in years ago and the OG Seagate "spinner", this iMac's (2009/2010) Link Speed is 3GB where as 2011 and up is 6GB.

Just added another 4gb to the ram on my late 2009 21.5 inch iMac making it a total of 8gb of ram and has made a huge difference not so much in opening apps, because it still has a spinner for a hd but in how apps behave and switching between them, like mail to safari and such. Have to find out if my friend knows how to open these without damaging them or if the IT guy at his work does and get an ssd for it and think I will have a rocket ship. Keep up the good work with making the patch tools, has to be a real pain. Thanks again!!

When you "Build and Install Open Core" with OCLP 1.4.0, Open Core will be updated to the next version. As of this post, since OCLP 1.4.0 has not yet been officially released and OC 0.9.8 has not yet been officially released, it's possible that OCLP 1.4.0 (Release) could include OC 0.9.8 (Release) ... too early for me to tell whether OCLP 1.4.0 will include OC 0.9.7 or 0.9.8.

No how do I find the config.plist?

I don't want to steer you in a direction that is beyond your knowledge. Since you upgraded from a previous version of macOS and you are experiencing problems, you should try to perform a clean installation of Sonoma.

EDIT: Make sure you have a way to recover your system/data before you start experimenting. I don't know your risk tolerance, but I would suggest that you have a backup using your preferred backup mechanism before you start experimenting.

Perhaps it may not be related, but back then when i did update to 14.2.1 caused Mail including previously working iCloud and Google accounts to behave a bit funny.

I was not able to send emails whatsoever. Error: "Server offline." No matter what SMPT server was chosen. All of them seemed to be offline and non working. I was only able to solve the issue by removing the gmail account completely from internet accounts. In that case it was likely a non OCLP issue. I did not try to reproduce this in 14.3.

I have tried again Sonoma on my iMac 17,1
Finally I have rolled back again to Ventura which far more polished for this hardware.
There are several (non blocking) graphical glitches on Sonoma which are nonexistent on Ventura
- green videos thumbnails in Finder and Photos.app
- in Maps (and all mapkit apps), there are some transparency problems around some texts (look atstreet names and POI names in my attachment)
- it's heating in standby due to the video screensavers (better to disable to avoid fan noise)
- sometimes there are some menu bar problems after resuming from standby

For all these small reasons, I recommend to stay on Ventura on this kind of hardware, unless you are forced to upgrade for a missing feature.
I hope it will improve, but as the OCLP project seems a bit stall, I am not very confident.

I've kept your suggestions in mind and I opened Maps, photos, and even in Finder, I haven't observed any green thumbnails and when I opened maps to my current location, I didn't observe any of the transparency issues either.

The only real issue I had was adding the second Gmail account to apple mail, but that may be a google issue. All current existing mail accounts that were present in Monterey before the upgrade work as expected.

Perhaps it may not be related, but back then when i did update to 14.2.1 caused Mail including previously working iCloud and Google accounts to behave a bit funny.

I was not able to send emails whatsoever. Error: "Server offline." No matter what SMPT server was chosen. All of them seemed to be offline and non working. I was only able to solve the issue by removing the gmail account completely from internet accounts. In that case it was likely a non OCLP issue. I did not try to reproduce this in 14.3.

I have Sonoma 14.3 in a Fusion VM will copy it to the Monterey install and try to add the account in the VM since OCLP isn't present there. That way i'll find out if it's an OCLP or Google issue for sure.
