macOS 14 Sonoma on Unsupported Macs Thread

that will be my next approach.
(just because i'm curious - all my prevoius attempts only failed towards the end of the installation process - and a different boot picker selection and a mbr formated usb stick - not efi - will help me to get a successful installation?))

Hello,
I was disabling SIP to edit/modify a file: /System/Library/Displays/Contents/Resources/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-610/DisplayProductID-9c0a
But unfortunately even with SIP disabled and sudo vi I was not able to modify or rename that file.
It says read only.
Is there anyone who can explain, how I could modify that file?
The reason to modify it: I have two MBP 2012, but under Sonoma only on one of them the brightness keys are working.
That one uses ProductID-9ccb.
And on a test partition I would like to just paste that into the other file, ProductID-9c0a, which is used by the non working device.

Hi. Trying OCLP + macOS 14.4 on a Mac mini 5.1 (2011).
Installed ok. Two immediate issies
1. Keyboard often does not work (just beeps from the Mac) - as if some other process is highlighted…
2. No menu bar showing

Was working ok with 14.1….

I may be misunderstanding what you mean by "legacy windows installation" but this is empirically not true here
on a rMBP 2012 and using the Dortania link works if you follow it to a tee, and if you do not follow it exactly, I have seen the kinds of errors with aborted boots that pepepro appears to be seeing.
If you mean something else ignore this post. Ah well. If another way works for someone else then great.
I am in no way a WinGuru.

FWIW, I believe that may be the issue here. Using regedit as described in the Dortania link to a tee (I have seen the kinds of errors with aborted boots that you appear to be seeing when skipping or missing steps in that instruction )
has worked here, including the three simple regedit "live" edits during the install at the "This PC can't run Windows 11." dialog.
Ah well. Good luck regardless of your strategy.

In my case, the only way to install Windows 10/11 was to let the Bootcamp Assistant create the boot partition and pendrive, as it creates a hybrid MBR/GPT partition necessary for my hardware (Legacy mode)

Actually, it IS true :). "Legacy" windows means BIOS-based, which is not supported by OCLP:

However, it says it won't show, so maybe that's not the issue here. My Win11 is BIOS-based (legacy) so I always boot it holding option at startup, using the Mac's boot picker (I have the OCLP boot picker hidden anyway).

If the installation is BIOS-based it has to be booted there, and if it's UEFI-based, it can be booted from inside OCLP. At least that's how I've always seen it.

Well sure. Misunderstandings galore perhaps ;) The Dortania link I gave is of course a UEFI instruction for OCLP as that is what my rMBP supports and I am triple-booting Win11, Sonoma 14.2 and Ubuntu22-23 from within the OCLP bootpicker on some old Macs . Apple either supports Windows on UEFI or BIOS on a given Mac model. Maybe hybrids on some Macs, not sure. In short, the Dortania instruction works for UEFI and if you can use that it has some advantages over BIOS that may or may not matter to you, depending on what model Mac your attempting to dual boot and if it can use UEFI. I was assuming UEFI as this is a OCLP forum.

If you don't want to use OCLP then there are other ways for sure and so "Legacy" windows means BIOS-based"

Since people here have legacy Macs, I was wondering, if I could go into an apple store and still buy a compatible charger for the Macbook Pro 11,1. My stock charger has really frayed by the MagSafe end, and while it still works, should be replaced as a safety measure. I think it's MagSafe Gen 2.

Save money and go to Amazon.
So much cheaper and works good.

Thanks, I canceled the amazon order because people in the mac room i was talking in were saying that third party chargers can be dangerous over apple official I think If i'm going to put money into anything apple at this point, I'll just get a new mac to have a supported Mac going forward, plus I'd like to do the apple vision pro demo in store so it would make it worth going. the late 2013 MBP works but needs a new battery and other things to fix it up so it's not really worth putting much into for me right now. With my poor vision and the way apple does their macs now I don't feel comfortable changing the battery myself in this one since it's not a simple swap like my late 2006 MB was before it got hot and fried.

Remember to Always Read Before Updating. It just might save your bacon sometime.

THIS might be a part of what you are experiencing.

WARNING 1: Do not upgrade to macOS 14.4 if you have a non-Metal Mac​

macOS 14.4 is currently unsupported with Macs equipped with non-Metal Graphics Cards, see macOS 14.4 non-Metal sessions bug #1125 for more information. Affected Macs:

  • MacBook5,1 - MacBook7,1 (Early 2008 - Mid 2010)
  • MacBookAir2,1 - MacBookAir4,x (Mid 2008 - Mid 2011)

I bought it on eBay in 2020. Search for BCM94360CSAX. It's a simple replacement, especially if you are going to be in there doing the battery.

Over the lifetime of my mid 2012 rMBP, I've replaced the SSD, keyboard, battery and WiFi adapter.

I'm very appreciative of the amazing work that the developers have done to enable my 14 year old MacBook run the latest macOS.

Re. replacements, me too, except for the Wifi + BT card. By far the worst job was replacing the keyboard, that is a bear to do on the rMBP 10,1. I trashed the tinfoil KB backlight array while trying to remove it but use an external BT KB anyway.
 
macOS 14.3.1 via OCLP 1.5.0n significantly improved in responsiveness, also time after login, compared to OCLP 1.4.x

Auto Re-connect WLAN issue not solved by losing and re-joining WLAN on this machine.

That backlight is 30 minutes tops of espresso fuled focus (to not break anything else while doing it) to replace and around 8-10 bucks to buy. Have done that one a few times. But you probably know that.

I'm a software guy, I got impatient after tearing it apart when I saw the end was in sight. Should have taken a coffee break at that point.

What makes you think that the 'AX' in BCM94360CSAX is anything to do with a router that supports 'AX' ?

802.11AX WiFi standard is the new WIFI-6 standard and only the recent Apple Macs started supporting it late last year.

BCM94360CSAX does NOT provide 802.11AX support but 802.11AC
