macOS 14 Sonoma on Unsupported Macs Thread

1.0.0 is just the next version after 0.6.8. So, yes, just update and install. Although the OCLP devs recommend doing major updates like this using a USB drive to do a full install over the old system. It works just like upgrading directly from within the previous OS but just requires the extra step of creating a USB installer.

I think you should believe only the things you read and can reference. I don't remember reading anything of the sort though (I am not the most diligent of readers) 1.0.0 is a version of its own, I think. Like 0.6.8

Edit: It is followed by the 1.0.0. version, not 0.6.9!

I'll be wiping the disk and doing a full install from USB, though as you point out it may not be really necessary. I just like to blow everything away periodically, clean slate. I'll have backups on hand, obviously.

I've been pretty happy with Sonoma on my late 2013 as a test environment. I have Ventura on my iMac as an external install to the main install of Monterey. I feel like based on the experience with the MBP since my next upgrade will require OpenCore on this mac, anyway, I'm thinking more and more of just upgrading Ventura to Sonoma. It worked on the MBP Opencore was installed and patched, and I just downloaded and ran the installer as you normally would without Opencre. Seems to have worked just fine.
 
Yep, it all depends on your resources (among other things) which way you go. Normally I wouldn't clean install, this time I'm doing one. That way if there are any issues I'll know they're not caused by 'old' s/w and/or configs. Plus it's good practice for when one has to do it to recover from a serious issue. Takes longer but hey.

Full disclosure, all my stuff is on iCloud, and I have a second (still supported) Mac mini with Sonoma on it standing by if I need it.

I'm going to upgrade, but going to use a USB flash drive this time to see if there are any differences. I'm in the process of creating the installer now.

Beautiful to see that the Renderbox issues have been resolved for Ivy Bridge and Haswell, now the widgets, weather app and fontbook apps just work! (albeit pretty choppy as expected on such an old machine :p
 
I'm all up to date with my OpenCore stuff just finished upgrading my Ventura install to Sonoma, then OCLP updated after the initial reboot, and applied the new root patches / boot loader install.

Sonoma was quite a bit slower than Ventura initially, even with root patches on this iMac 17,1 but it seems OK now.

I followed your posts on this yesterday. I must confess to being less than knowledgeable about the risks with root patching wifi, but can you advise, in a home environment, is there any real risk if there are no bad actors on your network? This assumes one is sensible with websites and downloads etc.
FYI, apart from a test volume on my 14,2 iMac, I’ll be staying on Ventura until at least the first few Sonoma updates have been tested. I recall the issues we had with 13.3, which pushed me back to Monterey for some time.
 
Installed 1.0.0 on my 2012 Mac Mini. Mostly working well, a couple of issues - has anyone come across? or Know a fix for them?

  1. On 0.6.9n Sonoma Branch, my Mac Mini 2012 would hard freeze after some time - I'm hoping 1.0.0 fixes it.
  2. When I try to connect the Apple Watch to the Mac for unlocking, it tells me "Your Mac was unable to communicate with you Apple Watch." It worked in Ventura - is it not supported in Sonoma yet?
  3. Widgets are missing info - Stocks show price but don't list symbol, Calendar Widget never populates, etc. Are these known issues?

I don't have an Apple Watch, so I can't help in that regard. But what do you mean by ''hard freeze?'' Is it after doing something specific? Also, the widgets thing is known I'm pretty sure, I've had the exact same issue with them since Ventura.

Spotlight indexing takes some time - tomorrow system will be as Ventura.

You know, I finally get to try the latest macOS on my iMac, and i really don't care. I thought I was going to be all excited but, really it doesn't feel any different than just running Monterey which is natively supported. I know there are updates, and certain software will start requiring the latest more and more, but for every day stuff, it really doesn't feel all that special. I do appreciate the work the Devs have put into the project though, so I don't want to sound ungrateful. I guess I've just gotten into a routine that really doesn't require the latest anymore. Apple's latest doesn't feel special like it used to, because there is more hype than actual material that matters.

I did not think through what 'spoofing' meant - I just did it mindlessly. Served me right. When I got the MBP11,4 to finally run Sonoma, it failed when I spoofed it to - MBP14,3 that worked for Ventura. Of course it failed. It was only when I realised I should spoof to a supported MBP (in this case, 15,1) did the laptop work. Sometimes, I wonder at myself.:rolleyes:

APPLE WATCH:
So my Apple Watch was connected to the Mac in Ventura and still was after upgrade to Sonoma. However, since upgrading to Sonoma, I'll get the option in OSX on my Mac Mini to approve on the watch or enter password, but I no longer receive the actual prompt on my watch to approve/unlock. I then turned off Apple Watch in the settings to unlock and tried to reconnect, and that's where it wouldn't resync. I rebooted the watch and could reconnect again, but still same problem, no option ever shows on the watch to unlock.

FREEZING:
The computer is essentially idle. I'll boot up, everything working fine and for example, I'll go back 4+ hours later, I can see the screen, I go to move the mouse or use keyboard and nothing. It's just frozen. Have to reboot. I'll report back if still same issue on 1.0.0.
 
I just finished updating to Sonoma on my MBP 9,1. It seems to be working well. Indexing is chewing up some CPU atm, but I have been able to import images into Pages, Numbers, and Keynote again, so quite pleased so far. I wonder if OCLP 1.0.0 would make that work in Ventura also?

Big hats off to the devs on this update.
