macOS 14 Sonoma on Unsupported Macs Thread

Hello Good People,
I am having an issue with my Wifi not working. After reading several threads I was not able to find a solution. Any tips would be very much appreciated.

I installed Sonoma on my MacBook Pro 8,3 using OCLP V1.0.0
I cannot install the Post-Install Root Patch cause I got no Wifi.

Can some please help a girl out?

Do your USB connections work? If so, have you tried a USB WiFi adapter? You could get one for $5 or so on Amazon. Then you can download and install the root patches and have the adapter as a back up in the future.
 
FWIW, I made the mistake of allowing Sonoma loose on my Ventura setup with the wrong version of OCLP; after a number of days of fighting the mess, I now have the 1.0.0 OCLP and my files back, but running on Monterey. I've tried the Ventura and Sonoma installers but both complain that they're broken. It's not a major problem, my systems all work in Monterey just fine, but I'm bothered by the installers refusing...is there something I should be setting differently?

this is really nice to know cause i thought the usb wifi adapter would need root patches to properly work on sonoma. could you point some link to make it easier to get it? thanks anyway

MBP5,2: 14.0 runs well with latest OCLP 1.0.1n (i.e. EFI and post-install patches). Only the show-desktop doesn't work (windows don't go away), as was already the case for earlier OCLPs.

Tried 14.1 beta on MBP5,2. Booting the USB installer hangs at an early stage. Same when using OTA, MacOS Installer hangs early while earlier phases of upgrade went well. This is the case with OCLP 0.6.9n, 1.0.0, and 1.0.1n.
I first did these trials on external USB target SSD, then plugged the same SSD to internal SATA, same behaviour.
KP logs attached.

Doesn't matter much as the existing 14.0 installation on this SSD survives the tests. Just to inform.

Hey mikelets456,
I appreciate the quick response. My USB ports are working. Thanks for the adapter tip. I was hoping for that internal Wifi solution. I may have to wait for Sonoma to mature.

Correct, that's why I asked her if the USB ports were working---Mouse, keyboard, etc. I had to get get a 3.0 USB hub (Amazon Vine---free) for my Mid 2009 MBP 5,5 as my keyboard and mouse are unresponsive and I get the message on the screen "upgrade root patches"...but I can't access it after installing Sonoma and 1.0.0. I wonder if the Devs could have the root patches auto install on older Macs in OCLP/Sonoma?

FWIW, I don't have Wifi on my 5,5 Mid 2009 and the message came up "do you want to install root patches". I don't recall having to need Wifi.
 
Just a small SSD test drive in one of the drive bays of the Mac Pro. Works great so far! 👍

Sorry I'm not following. I thought you initially said that you needed to install root patches for USB Wi-Fi, but now it appears you are saying that you do not need OCLP post-install patches for Wi-Fi when you use a Wi-Fi USB adapter? Would you mind clarifying? If you don't need post-install patches for your USB Wi-Fi, which USB Wi-Fi? Thanks!

EDIT: I saw an earlier question where you wondered why OCLP was prompting you to install root patches when you don't have Wi-Fi. Note that OCLP patches more than Wi-Fi. Read the OCLP prompt to see what it wants to patch.

Having an option in OCLP that "allow the user to selectively disable post-install root patches " would allow me to operate my MacBookPro9,1 (with upgraded WiFi/BT card (to BCM43602)) without wireless network functionality root patching.

Just fork the source and create your own patcher edition, this is what I would do when I ever start to feel uncomfortable with the development of the OCLP team. It is really easy, especially for computer security experts like you!

So just got Sonoma 14.0 / OCLP 1.0.0 running on a Mac Pro 6,1 with D300s with a Inland Premium 1 TB SSD / Sintech adapter.

Basic functionality is good, Mail worked fine to connect to multiple accounts, Safari 17 seems ok for non-video sites

Some video sites throw 'there is something wrong with your setup' that don't throw the error in Ventura / Safari 16

BOINC no longer recognizes any GPUs, which is upsetting because the GPUs were doing most of my workload, the CPU projects run like molasses compared to modern Xeons; probably have to wait for it to be re-comboobulated for Sonoma but the last time I looked the guys who program their Mac build weren't promising updates any time soon

That is a good suggestion. Thank you.

It is not widely known that all computer security experts are also software developers.

May need to ask this question in the official Discord support.

I suspect this may only require downloading the patcher update and not the entire installer.

On a system without built-in Ethernet, one strategy would be to connect to a cell phone by USB cable and use the cell phone as a hotspot.

The 1.0.1 patcher is about 550MB, so not a small chunk of data depending on someone's data plan but doable.

Or download on another system and sneakernet with a flash drive.

Sorry, but to achieve what I have proposed you do not need to be a software developer. Some Unix system administration know how would be sufficient.

What makes me wonder all the time: How can people talk and discuss and post about computer security without knowing the math, the architecture and the implementation details of both OS and patcher needed to understand even basic concepts. But this is only Mac Rumors….

You jumped to your 'without knowing' conclusion a little too easily, don't you think?

What makes me wonder all the time: how can people who so easily make assumptions that lead to incorrect conclusions develop secure software?

You'll notice that none of my technical positions have lead with personal attacks. I've learned that someone who leads with a personal attack is doing so because they don't have a solid claim on which to base their position.

I have never found that to be untrue and I've read enough of your posts to know that it is no longer an assumption. A frustrating experience to say the least.

You confuse a personal attack with a cold judgement based on posts published here. Not everybody can be a real IT expert, even if he is spending a lot of time into it. This is completely fine. It was always necessary to evaluate information sources, not all are equally trustworthy.

And you confuse wisdom with arrogance (an equally cold judgment). I don't believe I've read such an arrogant statement in all the posts I've read on this forum. You must be very confident in your own abilities.
