macOS 14 Sonoma on Unsupported Macs Thread

Patched OTA full installer update to 14.1b3 23B5067a using 1.0.1 worked fine.

However, in hindsight Sonoma upgrade was not worth it after all. Notes, Mail, Messages search won't work. Photos still crashing constantly, reproducible. Keychain folder is filling up with 10s of GB temporary files. Upgrading to Sonoma is not worth the hassle. Doing this for fun, kind of a hobby its just fine. But from a productivity point of view, there is not much of a difference to Ventura or even BigSur. Performance is still the same ish as it was in HighSierra, at least on this machine, a 9,2.

Surely, widgets are neat, all the other small improvements are very welcome, keeping the MacOS secure is also important, but it's not worth putting those in a major update. There is no feature apart from latest security technologies, which are truly necessary.

After all, being an Apple user since 7.5.3 I feel the MacOS update cycle is way too small. Every 2 or 3 years would be totally fine. The problem Apple has is obvious. Newer, faster and more powerful hardware every year won't cut it anymore for the average user. A new OS neither. A true dilemma for Apple indeed. New is not better anymore.

Still I am grateful for the amazing work the developers put into this project. Thank you!

I have a few older Macs that I too play around with OCLP on. I find that Haswell and later (mid 2013 and newer) hardware works really well overall with Ventura and Sonoma. Basically to the point where I'd be happy with it as my main system. Older machines can work well too, but depending on what you do you can easily find yourself stuck with some broken feature. For these I find Big Sur and Monterey to be a better compromise between stability and keeping up to date with software and security. Catalina and older are unfortunately beginning to lose support for a lot of software.

Does anyone here use Wiz ? I haven't been able to get it's widget to work on the mac to control my lights. The Apple supplied widgets seem to work such as clock, weather calendar, etc. but couldn't get that one to populate. It's one of those widgets that would be used from the phone since there is no native macOS version for it.

The main problem is, it just doesn't populate any info. Never tried it in Ventura, just Sonoma.

Installed 14.1B3 with OCLP 1.0.1 and still seeing the graphics problems as before. See attached files. I tried going to lock screen and logging out but neither helped. Anyone else seeing this?

In this build Notes, Mail, Messages search won't work.

I did find a solution to this one: I deleted everything within ~/Library/Metadata and search is back up and running as expected.

I didn't notice before, but now I see that my fan is running a little more with Sonoma. I have learned to place my coffee cup next to the fan to keep it warm.

Facedetection does work over here. However, clicking Memories crashes the Photo app with a 100% certainty.

If I install big Sur into a VM (VMWare Fusion 13 Pro) here, and then upgrade the VM to Ventura, has anyone had experience with that working? I would like to run Ventura and Monterey at the same time (Monterey being the host OS.) I know I won't have 3D acceleration in a VM, but they tend to be stable.

I tried Ventura in a VM when it first came out and VMWare 13 was new as well, and Ventura kept crashing. However, I did it as a clean install vs an upgrade from an existing OS, and a lot of fixes have been put in place since then. So just thought I'd get some thoughts. Not going to bother with Sonoma as Fusion 13 doesn't officially list it as supported.

Internet Sharing (Ethernet to WiFi) not working on either Mac Pro 5,1 or 6,1 running OCLP 1.0.1 on default settings and Sonoma 14.0.

Sharing can be activated but mini-network defined in Wi-Fi options never appears in airspace.

Upgrading the VM from Big Sur to Ventura/Sonoma should definitely work: of course, as currently the built-in VMware Fusion 13 tool for generating macOS install media is broken for 12+ guests, you would have to upgrade directly inside the VM, from a full local installer (downloaded/copied into the VM or on a USB drive) or from Software Update (which offers only Sonoma); and, if only paravirtualized graphics worked (see also adding two lines to the .vmx, as described in a previous post), it would also be possible to have accelerated graphics inside the VM: but in Fusion this hasn’t worked for a while, at least on my machine (also before Sonoma as a host)…

Right and I'm used to macOS not being accelerated in a VM. Can Mojave upgrade to Sonoma, or should I do the big sur upgrade instead? I'm also still looking into Open Core's Linux support, so I can have a native install of that as well without having to deal with grub. I'll let you know what I come up with after trying different things.

I think this has been reabled to work on the MBP 11,3 in OCLP 0.6.8, but now with Sonoma and OCLP 1.0.1, it doesn’t do facescanning again. …. Hmm… i hope for an fix with a further OCLP update

EDIT: Leaving this post below, but I think that the "double-click" behavior may be because another window stole scope just after the OCLP prompt appeared. I'll monitor this and update this post if necessary, but it's not a big deal and it is probably a false alarm.

Running Sonoma 14.0 Release on MBP6,2 with an earlier release of OCLP 1.x. Not a big deal, but when I boot Sonoma, the OCLP alert to upgrade OCLP requires two clicks: the first click grabs OCLP GUI scope and the second click activates the button. I think it should normally require only the single click of the button.

I would upgrade from Big Sur (after making a copy of the VM), but probably it works also from Mojave. Remember that, in the case you should want to upgrade to Sonoma, then it’s best to use the VMware Fusion Tech Preview 2023, as this supports Sonoma both as a host and as a guest…

Apple has been sending occasional notices about their "Cloud-based XCode." I don't know enough about it and haven't used it yet, but it appears to me as though Apple Developers will have access to the latest XCode without the latest macOS. Does anyone have experience with Apple's Cloud-based XCode to know if it is a suitable replacement for XCode running in Sonoma?

If we have access to the latest XCode without needing the latest macOS, this could significantly influence macOS upgrade decisions (e.g., I might decide to stay on Monterey if I can still use the latest XCode).

Acidanthera, the folks behind Open Core, provide kexts for patching macOS so that it runs in a Hyper-V VM. I haven't used the solution, but I've seen others who are quite happy. This might be another option for you.

EDIT: Version 0.9.4 of the Acidanthera solution was the first to provide Hyper-V VM support for Sonoma. Acidanthera has released version 0.9.6.

That's good to know, I'll look into that. I don't see anything wrong with your post. These threads are targeted toward running newer versions of macOS on older Macs Apple has dropped support for. Open Core Legacy Patcher is just ONE solution for this. VMs are another.
