Yeah, I was looking for this sound when Catalina first booted. Glad that it is back.

Glowing logo? Maybe we will see it back in the new redesign?

I noticed in the keynote and asked in the forums did anyone else hear that boot chime? I had re-enabled it on my 2018 15" and this new 16" I'm typing on....but this boot chime is a higher pitch and quite a bit louder than the chime that was on Catalina. Its a welcome change!

OMG, stop wasting electrons on ridiculous articles like this (startup sounds).

Shush Quark. Let us hew-mons enjoy our archaic human customs. Now get me a glass prune juice.

I'm starting to be glad that Jony Ive has left. It seems like he was out of ideas other than "quieter and thinner/flatter UI" and needed to go. As soon as he did: thicker 16" MBP w/amazing keyboard (its a delight to type on), boot chime back, redesigned macOS!

The chime is kinda meh these days. The new design is atrocious to the eyes; brighter, curved, new menus floating, bad icons, white text on light backgrounds...

Wow. This gives me hope. Let's leave that limey tyranny in the past.

I used the hack I found on MR (I think) to turn it back on just a couple months ago. I definitely missed it! It's the little things in life ... they add up and give a little sparkle to your every day.

I love that the chime is back, but I wish they would change it from time to time, like the used to. We've had the same chime for basically 25 years, with some minor tonal shifts. Something new would be fun, maybe even different chimes for different models.

Me too. Back when I was in college, all MacBooks still had the chime and it was obnoxious when you were sitting in class and someone's computer "went off" when it was booting up. The fact that there was no way to block it was absolutely crazy.

The first thing I'll be doing when I install Big Sur will be to disable this so I'm not the jerk having my computer disrupt anybody the next time I need to open the lid in the library or anywhere else I don't need to draw attention to myself with the "look everybody, I have an expensive laptop" sound.

In the olden days (circa 2007)...all you had to do to turn the chime off was to hold the mute button (I think). This doesn’t work with the 12” MB (I think).

They bragged about updating all the Mac OS X sounds for this release, and it is version 11.0 with a new design. This should mark the beginning of a new era, and while I would really like an optional startup chime, I think they should have updated the sound itself.

So happy the startup chime is back, when i got my first Mac after spending 2 decades in the PC / Windows world its little things like the startup chime that give Mac's a bit of a personality and made me absolutely love the device over my Acer's, HP's, Lenovo's, it made my Macbook Air feel well cooler than every laptop i had ever owned. These little things end up in films like WALL-E where he wakes up and makes the apple startup chime. The glowing Apple is what i want back next!

I really don't think Apple under Timmy understand how important these little finishes are. Go to a conference and see glowing Apple logo's everywhere really makes their products stand out from the crowd or in TV shows, News.

I used the terminal cmd to bring it back under Catalina already, but its good to see it return as default.

Now please just bring back the glowing Apple, and MagSafe, (even if its just a USB-C breakaway style connection).

My bad, when I was posting I didn't mention I'm on Mojave, which has no option to disable it.

I can read just fine, thank you.

Well, since as far as I know only developers can download the beta of Big Sur, I'm guessing most of us are on a version of macOS that doesn't have that option, so that's sort of a given.

And I didn't say you couldn't read (that was someone else). I just see this a lot on forums, where I or someone else will start a thread and some replies clearly show the person only read the thread title and not the opening post, as they ask or assume something that was clarified in the post.

No big deal - just thought it was funny.

Am I the only person that finds this sound annoying? Just like the windows 7 startup sound.

I'm not sure. I not only re-enabled the sound on my iMac Pro a long time ago, but I also enable the Windows start sound on my Windows 10 and Windows 8 installs too!

I knew I forgot one, that was my "amongst more" in my last post...
The magsafe power connector was a genius "device" and the current USB-C connector is so lame. It regularly loosens and I don't discover it until my MacBook battery has drained. The magsafe never loosened like that.
