IMHO, MacOS Big Sur, along with Apple Silicone, is part of Apple's efforts to converge the Mac and iOS lineup. Even though they claimed they would not do this, it is now being done in a more stealthy way. And to encourage Mac faithful that this is somehow the same Mac they've all grown to love, they are bringing back the startup chime to try to convince us things are the same.

But they're not.

This is for fun so moaners will be ignored. ( and apologies to Pepsi )

Cook's apple
mag safe steelin - dongle needin - batt-ery n hard drive gluedin - start up chime-less - snoozin light-less - sd card-less - new finder icon grinning mess - no more backlit apple logo - charging led where’d that go - need more ram much later no chance - latest keyboard is just pants - skinny macpros are just nuts - pros need macs with lots of guts - dear tim cook less is not more - at times I wish you out the door - steve gave macs personality - nearly all gone none in actuality - never did I want to moan about a mac I love to own ??

( written before the start-up chime re-introduction, even wall-e has it ! )

Mac reboots itself without warning: BOOOOONNNGGG!!!!

Me to sleeping baby: oops, sorry, were you sleeping?

Baby: wah wah wah

Me: thanks Apple, your royal smugness!

Anyway, I'm very happy that they've decided to give this a check box so people can choose.

Bring back MagSafe, Glowing  and a breathing sleep light while you’re at it...

Why would they remove this? I recall vividly noticing this on my first Mac "Hey, it's sleeping, you can see it in the light! So cool!" and it was one of those things that made me fall in love with Apple. It ensured that I stayed with the platform even though I was a Windows nerd who had a momentary curiosity to try out Apple. All these little instances of "surprise and delight" worked for me. After that first Powerbook, I spent another 20+ years on Apple hardware.

Now that's something I truly missed! 👏

I guess Apple had trouble with callers asking "how to disable this in Terminal if it worked" Gives everyone the convenience, but then they shouldn't have taken it away either.

Am I the only person that finds this sound annoying? Just like the windows 7 startup sound.

I guess like anything, it "grows' on ya . Windows 7 sound i like.. Apple chime on my MBA 2017, i've reduced MacOSv sound from OS, so i never hear it. For reference, its just one slide up from 0% :) (I guess someone at Apple forgot that was in there)

The startup chime occurs before macOS starts loading so it’s actually part of a firmware update in the Mac, not Big Sur. Big Sur just happens to be how it’s installed.

I can't remember if i had a firmware update, but If it was separate from the OS. then Apple was a fool allowing the volume control to dictate chime. It makes my life easier though, cos I just raise volume when i need it

This is enough reason to upgrade alone! Yes I know the chime can be enabled but I'm so glad it's back by default ❤️

If anyone is desperate for it now, run this in the terminal:
Bash:
sudo nvram StartupMute=%00

If you want to disable it again:
Bash:
sudo nvram StartupMute=%01

Wish they could update it, or even better: support custom startup sounds! It might be hard-coded though unfortunately.

The chime/bong/chord has seen several iterations in the Mac’s history. It feels due for another refresh.

Is there a way just to reduce its volume, its soooo loud on my MBA

Same here! I’ve just disabled it for now as it’s too loud for if I reboot at night.

Anyone figure out a way to control the chime volume? It doesn’t respond to the system volume like it used to. I love it but not when it’s announcing it’s presence to the entire street!

I’m guessing this was a psychological move. In other words, they are charting a new direction, moving to their own silicon and moving on from OS X to version 11, but are adding back a few physical cues to the past, such as the startup chime and the transparency, to reassure users that they haven’t forgotten their roots.
