ok, switching my vpn to australia actually got the download to start again. so weird. It will take forever at this rate, but happy to at least see it doing something instead of giving me an immediate error message for once.

Moderators - Could you review my original post please. This might turn things around quite quickly. I'm not expert, hence why I need to see if this is actually legit. Thanks!

used a VPN to Australia and its downloading again, failed when I tried USA and other locations in EU
Yup. I can confirm. Just VPNd to Australia and it started downloading again. So this points yet again to potentially Akamai messing things up somehow. Just a few weeks ago we had very similar issues at work, where everything should have worked except for Akamai for some reason that took a ton of people and Akamai support engineers to finally fix. And yeah, wasn't our fault.

Anyone check the MD5 for a direct download from Apple's Software Update? I want to compare against the twitter link.

The problem are 2 corrupt files in library/updates/001-79699 which is i guess the big sur update got corrupted.

Impossiblen to delete them..

Yes! working for me too!!! And I was trying different locations earlier (just had not tried the land down under).

Planned day: download mac os Big Sur, start setup, go get groceries while it reboots.
Actual day: get fed up, go get groceries, come back, find computer no longer works ok, run disk utility for an hour or so, eat crackers previously planned for later.
Tomorrow: "Automatically Keep My Mac up to date" is checked. Therefore, I will check out Big Sur just after breakfast! 🍸😹
