This reminds me of the old days. 12.18 GB of 12.18 GB downloaded but the progress bar isn't full...
98% sure that it is checksumming the download but it's been sitting there a while...

I'm looking at the same screen (in dark mode). verifying the package perhaps? Hopefully we're in!

Was at the same spot --- clicked the x to the right of the progress bar and restarted... resumed download from ~7.48

Same here. Maybe it cleared something since Big Sur just finished downloading. Except now it gave me an error message right at the end and says that my Mac is up to date with Catalina 10.15.7.

It finally seems to have downloaded and is installing now.

Mine said failed when I downloaded 2Gb, then I have to restart to continue download, but after a few second, it failed again. How can i remove the download? Every time I start it will quickly load that 2Gb.

Finally got it to work. Had to be 20-30 failures. Only Apple could motivate me to try this hard to update. LOL.

What was perplexing is that, at least for me, the betas were extremely stable and I had no issues installing them on my MacBook. I almost installed the release candidate yesterday on my MacBook Pro, but decided to wait a day for the “official” release.

You don't want to remove the download, that will simply cause the process to take longer.

After 7 hours and multiple attempts from Washington DC. used a VPN to UK and was able to complete download in approx 40 minutes. Rebooted and installing now. Wish me luck. Thank you to all for their insight and suggestions. Happy downloading.

Now the Software Update mechanism figured itself out and is downloading as well. Except it's saying an hour to go. UGH. Does anyone know if Install Assistant.pkg has the file needed to create a thumb drive?

My download has followed this pattern - it picks up about 2 GB at a time, then pauses and doesn't progress further for a few minutes. Then it resumes . . . and now I'm nearly there . . .

Roughly the same. Gone from 2.9GB to 6.15GB to now 8.2GB (which is where it's now stuck) with a hangup of varying minutes in between. Sometimes cancelling and starting again helps.

I did. Just now. I am typing this on Big Sur finally downloaded without any special workarounds.
