people on reddit started sharing a direct download link from appstore, for the installation file - InstallAssistant.pkg
but these servers are now down too...
some people have it but so far nobody wants to share it on a p2p torrent or some other service... it's over 11GB.

Resetting the SMC as above didn't do squat on my MBP. Kind of absurd they can't do an update on a $5,000 purchase. They obviously know the demand will be high...but have hundreds of billions in savings and a "spaceship" campus, but can't do an Operating System update.

And this is why I never update on day of release. I'll let all you guys get the kinks worked out and I'll update a few weeks from now or after the next.

Was so close to having it all downloaded before the never-ending failures started. Was actually excited about updating this time around too.

The install.log in the Console is showing that the Akamai servers are sending 'TCP_DENIED' to the requests to download the installer package. That could be because its been pulled , or could be down to all sorts of network issues at Apple, Akamai, or whoever. Eg...

Yeah, I doubt it's the same. Netflix has about 60 million users, and not all of them are quickly looking to stream a released movie, I know people that don't even look at their account for days, and not all of them are going to want to watch whatever new movie they put out. I wouldn't be surprised if less than 15 million users are quick to watch a new movie on Netflix. Also a Netflix movie is not 12.18 GB all at once, it's probably 1GB per every hour. Also, that movie might not be available on other countries. If Apple has 100 million Mac users, I'd say more than 20 million are trying to download it at the same time across the world.
Yeah spot on, would go further and suggest those who are super keen to get it today also have pretty good internet speeds and know what they're doing.

I can't really defend Apple here, especially when it's affecting third party apps, I saw a Zoom call earlier in this thread being disrupted. Here in the UK we are hitting the sack in a moment (22:12) but over Stateside or Oz, it's still business hours.

I don't recall having an issue like this last year, it was slow (couple hours). But I can't recall it failing 3/4 times etc.

Stucked here from an hour or 2,:mad::mad: Its frustating

Pathetic.

Netflix, etc, can handle the load when a new movie or TV series is dropped. You'd think Apple would've figured this out by now.
But I think Netflix drops their new stuff at 3am EST, not in the middle of the afternoon when the whole nation is fully awake and eager to download.

No excuse for Apple, just fair observation.

Every time I think of giving Apple another chance . . .

(I'm still on a 13" rMBP from 2013 with Sierra . . . and every time I hear something like this I think about how the PC icons in macOS have the blue screen of death. Not sure if they still do in Big Sur, but if I were Apple I'd cut the hubris.)
