I can't get my Time Capsule HD to show up in Disk Utility in order to reformat it in APFS. Is this not possible with the type of drives in the Time Capsule?

I always had to use Airport Utility to work with the Time Capsule drives. I don't have TC anymore so not sure if that changed.

I wonder how the speed and memory usage is on older Macs? Is there any report?
I enjoy using a maxed-out (8gb) early 2014 Macbook Air with Catalina. Would like to use it another year or so before going Apple Silicon. But it shouldn’t be a chore.
I've installed on my late 2013 15-inch. It seems very quick. I don't notice any lag or sluggishness. 16GB, 2.6 GHz.

To my tastes, Big Sur is stunning. I'm also really enjoying the various app improvements.

I thought there was a bug in Messages because the search field didn't work. After letting it work over night (presumably to index messages), the search now works fine.

My only actual complaint (too strong a word) is that the notifications and widgets are in the same vertical column. I found that the widgets (I only have two) scrolled off the bottom of the page when there were a bunch of notifications.

I can no longer see my entire list of stocks in Notification Center - only the Indices and three stocks! Is there a way to fix that?

The UI is exquisitely tuned to mouse usage. For example, I'm sure they spent quite some time deciding exactly how much to increase the menu bar height. Redesigning to support touch usage and mouse usage at the same time would be a significant challenge.

Also, I HATE FINGERPRINTS ON MY SCREEN.

I'm assuming the Weather Widget change isn't everywhere as mine is still the old style without the 'Dark Sky' changes!

Same here.
I believe the hourly rainfall only shows up when it’s raining, but it shows in many areas.

And FINALLY Messages search finds usernames and not just message content. That only took since '03 to implement. I continue to wish that the search terms would be highlighted in messages (or that the highlighting that's present were more prominent) but I'm a fan of the improved functionality overall.

Big Sur will be my first MacOS since Snow Leopard. iPad took me away but Big Sur design and M1 has brought me back. I’m so damn excited!!

Agree. Very odd changes that slow you down.
Some of the toolbars for instance. It used to be the icons went from one side of the screen to the other.
Take Finder for instance. They are scrunched up in the pane on the right so you have to click on an arrow to see some of them whilst the left pane is now empty!
Good point about the Finder. Apple made a judgement call that the user needs more vertical space on the left for the sidebar than horizontal space for the toolbar. That is consistent with my needs; I have many favorite locations and devices displayed in the sidebar and very few icons in the toolbar. I don't think they made that decision casually and without substantial user input. However, there will be a ton of users agreeing with you, finding it to be exactly the wrong decision because of the reason you gave.

ok. so I installed Big Sur on my iMac 2019 27" i9 with just 8GB of ram

I am not having any problems. safari is very responsive
I was getting Video artifacts popping out of safari on Catalina . I contributed it to only having 8GB of ram

So far no problems at all

As was said above, you use AirPort Utility to erase the Time Capsule drive.
Disk Utility is only for DASD drives (USB, Thunderbot, SATA, etc.) Network drives (NAS) like Time Capsule need a utility that commands the NAS to erase itself.

My Siri button on the TouchBar is non functional. Anyone else having this? Also occasionally I get a black background on a portion of the top title bar near the time.

Pretty sure I did a Time Machine backup to an APFS drive on Catalina last week

The fonts seem smaller everywhere which I'm finding make it harder to read. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Seems fast and smooth after yesterday's disastrous attempts to install.
I'm more of a function vs. looks guy but so far so good

Not a fan of the translucent windows I hope there is an option to get a solid color. The slight break between the popup windows and the finder menu bar...dunno...

Lets not forget this is a computer OS and we should concentrate more on capabilities than sheer looks, this is not a Channel bag.

You can adjust it in Accessibility -> Display

Tip 51: If you connect non-Apple headphones to your Mac, you just have to guess if they actually connect or not because the glanceable indicator on the menu bar icon is gone.

Thanks, Alan Dye.

I am finding Big Sur to be really fast. everything is just running way faster than before. Hoping it stays like this!

I'd recommend against APFS formatting if your TM drive is a spinner. APFS was engineered with SSDs in mind, and will thrash traditional HDDs. Do it if you want to, but it's a terrible idea.
