Yeah, but as @zorinlynx mention… coding and maintaining would be such a hassle.

Since the feedback was heavily criticized from those who are using it, best to revert it back to how it original was It’s crazy how loud the voices are for those who dislikes the design compared to the ones who favor it. Granted, would be nice to have a poll to find out the statistics behind it. I would think some feel indifferent about the new design, which would help the case of those who dislikes it.
In lieu of that case, I'd say just keep it the way it was in Big Sur. Also thank god for betas! I don't know how many people on are on the public betas, but imagine if this rolled out with the release candidate? Eek!

I actually liked the new design and have reenabled it, except for slight issues with not being able to close the current tab easily if had clicked into the address field by accident instead of landing on the x, hich still appear to be present, but also know it's all very much still 'in progress'

Must have been the only one who preferred the old way. Hopefully there is or will be an option to have it either way.

I have a feeling Safari for iPadOS will get the same treatment.
I hope so! The biggest issue with the new design is the constantly rearranging/resizing touch targets when you switch tabs. It's like Apple decided to resurrect the worst of JQuery UI "accordion" designs in some unholy ritual.

Hang on, this is an option!! The new merged address/tab bar is the default and you have the option to have a separate tab bar like above in Preferences.

For those wondering where to find this setting, this is where you find it. It is not in Preferences. It is under the View menu, select or unselect Show Separate Tab Bar. Good find @tomtad, I am relieved. I like the design and the beta 3 monstrosity needs a lot of work to be acceptable.

Re: headline saying redesigned because of complaints: Rene Ritchie tweeted something similar, wondering how close Apple got to all the changes we asked for. Is it typical for Apple to change UI design based on feedback during betas? Obviously they work on bug fixes but this wasn’t that.

I prefer their initial idea of merging url bar with tabs. Can someone confirm there is an option in the preferences to select one or the other?

To each their own. I like the dynamic address/tab bar… it’s new and fresh. I don’t have a problem with how it rearrange my multiple tabs… I can see that I’m on an active tab by how large it is.

My personally belief is…. that if we all sit with this new design for a long time, we will get accustomed to it. I understand what Apple thought process was when designing it… they wanted something different and streamlined.

That’s a shame, I unironically liked the reduced UI chrome
I’ve been missing tabs on top ever since they got ditched in Safari 5 (I think?) I understand it’s because most people have like 300 tabs open at every given moment but it was very handy for me

Not gonna cry over it tho, it was the right call when virtually nobody else appreciated it and even I have to admit having the address bad constantly move around was weird

This is why I never do betas on my daily drivers.
Lesson learned. I can’t remember the exact one I want to say iOS 12 or 13 (the one where they introduced Memojis and handwriting) but I installed the very first developer beta on my daily driver….. oh that was torture lol. You’d think I had learned my lesson.

I feel like I’m the only person that liked the change! Oh well, not a big deal to me at the end of the day am I’m one to never really have more than 5 tabs open and close them as soon as I’m done. I mostly appreciated how the interface stayed thin with more than one tab open. Oh well, can’t please everyone!
As noted in the article there is a setting to enable the unified tab/search bar for those who did like it.

Phew, you’re able to revert to the Beta 1/2 tab view. Thank you for that comment MacRumors! I thought I was stuck with this weird redesign.

I feel the Start Page is wasting a lot of space. It could hold at least one more thumbnail to make it look better, if not two.
