What... like.. your name and email address... Maybe some genius could work out a way to have the mail client automatically show that information to someone in a consistent place...
hmmm, what place could that be, hmmmmm. How about preferences, signatures?

You say Tag, Mail says Flag, same same
no, entirely different. Currently Apple's Mail.app allows simply assigning a 'flag', or not (though I think one can choose from a small selection of pre-defined colors). Arbitrary / extensible tagging, what Apple introduced in Mac OS X 10.9 and what it just introduced in the forthcoming, macOS 12 / iOS 15 versions of Notes & Reminders, is entirely different, and much more powerful -- you can assign basically any tag you please, e.g. #personal or #work or #travel, or #project XYZ, #project ABC, etc.

This functionality is present in Gmail and is very useful there. It's a shame it's still missing on native Apple platforms. Since Apple has now implemented tagging in Finder, Notes, and Reminder (and also Photos), I assume there must be some specific reason that it's holding back with Mail.

Seriously dude, they work fine for me. If you turn on notifications, you get alerts, simple as that. all my rules continue to work. I have noticed though that if I open Mail on my iPhone (which does not have rules), they are not applied on Mac until I manually apply them, not a biggie really, but you could put n a feedback request
Well, good for you, dude, seriously.

I'm not the only one experiencing erratic notifications; sometimes they work, other times they don't.

Yes, rules are working apart from alert sounds. I don't get the general sound for all mail, much less the custom ones. Not so simple.

There have been several others here and on Apple Discussions with the same problem, and yes we have all given feedback starting with macOS 11.1

See here, for example:

thanks for your clarification. I personally use Smart Mailboxes. I know not the same, but it works for me

sure, no problem. I use Smart Mailboxes too -- great feature. But it would be tremendously much useful if arbitrary tagging were possible.

Haven’t they had a crap ton of security faux pas?

I really recommend avoiding this program. I tried it once. Not long after installing it I started having my ISP email account shut down or exceeding our daily send Lynn program. I tried it once. Not long after installing it I started having my ISP email account shut down for exceeding our daily send limit. There were no messages coming from the computer it was installed on. After three or four times of that happening, I deleted the program. I have not had a single issue with it since.

Is Apple suggesting that in Monterey they will only be available via third party extensions rather than fixing whatever bug has caused them to not work as advertised currently?
I believe it said the plug-in architecture is being removed and replaced. Not built-in functions. but Like I said, I made sure mail was not muted, I made sure sounds were on on preferences, general, I addd a rule moving stuff to a junk mailbox and playing a sound. I turned on alert sounds at a sufficient volume, on system preferences (Believe it or not, I don't use this stuff) and made sure notifications were on for Mail in system preferences. And it is working just fine.

I do hope that the built-in functions will stay and not be replaced by add-ons and plug-ins, and that they will actually work.

I have several rules for different senders and they work as far as transferring to their mail boxes, bouncing in the dock, and colouring them, but the main problem is lack of custom sounds for each one, and the default sound for any sender that I haven't added a rule for.

Sounds are on in Mail prefs but they won't play even if I set Notifications to "OFF" in System Preferences. The only sound that does play consistently is the sent mail "swooosh!"

As I've said it is a long standing issue for some, but obviously not all users.

Thanks for your input!

I found this for you to be able to add custom alert sounds. You need to create and/or find alert sounds, they must be in AIFF format and are copied here:

/System/Library/Sounds/Ping.aiff

apparently, you can then use them throughout the system. cheers

Spark still has many more features that will keep me with them...

  • Snooze: Have an email to be redelivered at another time
  • Send Later: Schedule time for an email to be sent
  • Reminders: Spark will remind you if you haven't received a response to an email
  • HTML signatures
  • Email accounts and signatures synced across all devices with a single sign-in
  • Delayed sending
  • Smart notifications
  • Grouped emails based on 'people', 'newsletter', and 'notification'
  • Email templates with token fields
  • Integrations with Reminders, Zoom, GoToMeeting, OmniFocus, Things, 2Do, etc.
  • Link sharing to a specific thread/email
This does open the door for extensions to be able to replicate these features, though, which is the point. I myself would love a “whoops” button that you can cancel the email being sent out within 10 seconds. Lifesaver.

A couple of questions (out of legitimate curiosity): 1) What value do you see in HTML signatures? I don’t even use a plaintext mail signature (though, to be fair, my work email is all exclusively internal and I don’t really participate in mailserv type email lists anymore). 2) How does your HTML signature show up in email clients that default to plaintext for security reasons? (Preventing script execution or loading of remote images, for instance.)
I work in outside sales so my emails look more professional IMO with my headshot and some other info. My signature probably looks like a hot mess in plaintext but those people are probably used to seeing that. I sell mostly to consumers anyway, not businesses.

Who needs a button?

I always had two challenges with Apple Mail:

Windows using customers got my mails in a distorted way.
  • Images were embedded and reduced when they shouldn’t.
  • Fonts were replaced when they shouldn’t.
Airmail does this for me without any hassle.

I hope Apple solved this and I can come back. Airmail is quite buggy in minor areas and not that well designed.

Thanks, I have a whole load of them from previous OSs 😉

My latest addition and current favourite is Joanna Lumley's Got_post.aiff which she did for AOL. It's a pity Mail.app won't always play it.

I use transferupdater.aiff in Transmission to indicate a completed download.

Enjoy!

Airmail has this. I never needed it.

Would love to see more tightly integrated PGP-style encryption extensions that encrypt and decrypt emails with that protocol in a way that’s more seamless and automatic for users
