Please, hop on over to the spec page right now: http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/ , scroll down to the battery life claims, what are they claiming? Don't trust me. You do it and see for yourself. What are they claiming in writing right there on their own website?
They are claiming the following:
Battery life varies by use and configuration.

As you said: go take a look at the website and see for yourself. Do read the foot notes as well because the last one specifically tells you how they measured it plus warns you that battery life varies by use and configuration. Anyone who spends a few seconds thinking about how a computer works would have thought of all this by himself without having Apple to explain it to them.

You guys are complete morons. This is nothing like a fuel indicator on a car. It displayed a time dynamically generated based off of your usage. That doesn't mean it was ever even close to accurate. It always sucked, and it served basically no purpose.

Listen, I'm extremely unhappy with contemporary Apple too, but this is really not worth getting upset to the point of even commenting.

The battery on mine lasts less than 3 hours sitting on the desktop, no programs running. If this update doesn't fix that, it's going back to the store tonight.

If that's how it behaved out of the box, you should take it back. My 15" lasts for days... not literally, but I haven't had to worry about battery life... it looks like it'll last around 10 hours when doing basic stuff as Apple claims and I've had it for almost 2 weeks.

Once I start loading it up with 3rd party apps, that might change but then at least I'll know it's due to an offending app. And I don't use Chrome on Apple devices except in very rare cases so that'll save at least an hour or two right there.

So just to make sure, is the Macbook Pro battery actually getting ~3 hours in the real world and Apple is just hiding it? Or is has the indicator just been wrong this whole time?

There is no "make sure" here. Just like previous models, people are getting a wide variety of battery life times. some significantly less like 3 hours, some significantly more like 15 hours.

It feels more and more like being a paying beta tester for Apple's operating systems, this convinces me more and more to downgrade the only machine I upgraded to Sierra, will stay on El Capitan till can afford a PC with Windows 10, the Apple I bought my first PowerMac Dual G4 is long time gone...

I know I am in the minority but it makes sense to not show the length of time a battery will last in terms of time. Someone earlier made a comment that this is like taking the fuel gauge off the car but essentially Apple has left the fuel guage. However, like a car it doesn't try to tell you how long you can drive for in terms of hours and minutes. Everyone knows the faster you drive the more gas you're going to use. Not sure why the uproar here.
Using logic and common sense, and referring to reality instead of idiotic conspiracy theory? Yep you're in the minority here for sure.

How about using some machine learning algorithms to more accurately estimate the time remaining as the machine is used over time - instead of trying to guess my musical tastes.

Can you imagine if they removed the fuel indicator on a car, because you complained weren't getting enough MPG as reported.
If you're going to come up with a false analogy, at least come up with one that's different enough from the real situation that its not obviously wrong.

An actual car analogy would be removing the trip computer's readout of how many miles/km were remaining in the tank, and leaving just the fuel gauge. Which, of course, is how most people in most cars had to judge how much fuel they had left anyway, until relatively recently.

Customers with poor performance may be using apps that are not optimized for the new ...
Seriously, Apple! The only reason to buy a notebook with long battery life is to not worry about what drains the battery. I want ease of mind, I don't want to actually work 10 hours straight. Don't give me tips on how to prolong battery life, make me not think about it. I'm an unhappy customer when we even have to mention this topic.

Can we just skip to the class action lawsuit yet. I mean we all know it is coming. Let's just get it under way so we can all watch Apple make it right cause they wanted to. Dang it apple stop making us sue you to hold up your own high standards

*dusts hands off*
"Fixed that battery problem for you, guys!"

My time remaining for Apple is running out.....
Their time for me has past (as well as most of the other mac users in our office). I just like to hang around and bother the still-faithfuls now :)

Yup, people will be pissed no matter what path they take here...I can tell you from experience, battery life issues are no-win scenarios. So much of it has to do with usage, environment, perception and expectations. Day after day I would get users coming in with "battery life" issues and i check their battery condition and cycles, everything is fine. Battery does not appear to be draining quickly during our appointment. Standby time at 10+ hours. usage, however...

"hmmm so Facebook has used 64% of your battery today..."
"no i don't use it THAT much"

they don't need any more negative press but they had to rip that band aid off
Agreed. 10 hours is the estimate for watching a video, but flash and silverlight seem to be battery hogs. Or ~10 hours basic web surfing, but Facebook has a history of running video encoders in the background to serve their own adware and tracking purposes.

Also someone please make an attachable battery case to satisfy everyone who wishes it was thicker and heavier. Since it would plug into one of the T3 ports maybe it could even have a dozen obsolesc-ing ports.

Next Strategy from Apple;

"Steal every customers' watches so that they can not measure the battery life!"

Again, they do not guarantee 10 hours. Apple has never made such guarantees.

What do you read in Apple's marketing on the Apple site?

Or are you splitting hairs here with the definition of "guarantee"?

Apple makes a strong suggestion that one can get "up to 10 hours" with wireless web browsing usage. Your fellow consumers are saying they can't seem to get 10 hours. They could be collectively lying as you would probably believe (I'm guessing) or Apple could be clinging to the nice marketing number of 10 with the wiggle room to hide behind the "up to" portion.

So no, they do not make a guarantee. But they sure spin it such that their consumers seem likely to expect it. If those consumers realize a little less than the spin, they probably write it off to puffery. But if it's a fair amount less, they may voice frustration. Are they wrong to do so? Apparently.

Similarly, complaining about how people post and summarizing them as morons may not be worth commenting either. I think most people are aware of the dynamic And inaccurate nature of time estimate, but it's better than no time estimate. And it does help if you're cranking flash with 30 tabs on chrome to learn that it's way more power hungry than non flash safari. Magnitudes more helpful that "using a lot of energy" sub section because that doesn't quantify it in any way. Safari with 3 tabs open can be "using a lot of energy" especially if nothing else is running.

Not being vicious just saying, people are allowed to feel how they feel. It's a lot of money as a general brand, and this is the internet where people rant endlessly. I see no fault

John Gruber a relatively devout apple fan who still has great insight is even a bit turned off by this decision too.

The MacBook Pro bad news train just keeps on going…and going…and going… CHOO CHOO!!

I'm sorry if you bought this machine at launch, but if someone still buys this machine after all of this then I think they should have their head examined.

Seriously, Apple! The only reason to buy a notebook with long battery life is to not worry about what drains the battery at all. I want ease of mind, I don't want to actually work 10 hours straight. Don't give me tips on how to prolong my battery life, make me not think about it. I'm an unhappy customer when we even have to talk about this topic.

Then you should be angry at battery manufacturers, not Apple. The only way we will get to the point that you don't have to think about it is when someone develops new battery hardware that can hold so many hours of charge (i'm thinking 20-30+) that you almost never have to think about plugging in.

Until then, all computer companies can do is optimize their software. It's like cars...SHOULD we be running off of cleaner, more efficient energy sources? sure! but is the technology truly there yet, and are the powers that be willing to embrace it? nope

This is so dumb. I rely on that estimate when I'm doing work and I don't have a charger. I close stuff down and disable certain services to get the estimate up. This just looks like Apple covering up the battery life on their crappy new MacBooks.
