This is the post I've been waiting for. Someone saying a newer OS is actually as fast or faster than an old one. Apple has been going mostly backward ever since 10.6.8 so this is very welcome news. I'll still be waiting for a couple of point releases as usual before I download and test it myself, but maybe I won't skip Sierra altogether like I'd been planning to do.
Sierra is fine as far as speed goes but it's not Snow by any stretch.

In my experience, Mavericks is the slowest OS X ever. I think subsequent updates have been slowly improving performance.

I would agree that Mavericks was a bit slower than Mountain Lion, but when my office "upgraded" from Mavericks to Yosemite every single employee complained that their computers felt slower. Every member of my extended family who made the move to Yosemite said the same thing, that their Macs were noticeably slower than before. I noticed that simple things like displaying the Edit menu no longer happened the instant you clicked. Instead there was a tiny delay before the menu was drawn. I turned off transparency and all the other visual effects I could, but little delays like that persisted across the UI. It's interesting to hear a different perspective.

Yosemite was a mess.

El Capitan is pretty solid.

Sierra 10.12.1 (Public beta) seems alright on my 2014 rMBP.

I feel like Apple hits one out of the park and misses the next upgrade, but I think Sierra will be different.

I would like to try the stuff whoever at Apple was smoking when deciding this would be a good idea.

Pushing new OS to user is one thing, changing how features work without clearly informing users is completely different thing. Given the Apples track record with latest OS when released (Yosemite with WIFI bugs, El Capitan with USB bugs) Sierra might well have its own problems and many of the third party software aren't compatible which means one have to wonder why Apple decided to push it so aggressively?

I'm fairly certain many people will be disappointed when they notice that their software or hardware isn't compatible with Sierra...

Based on my testing I'm fairly certain Sierra has PDF related bugs and it seems many bugs from previous OS versions haven't been fixed (Mail, Spotlight etc.)

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro and wish I hadn't downloaded Sierra. My computer has been running hot with fan on all the time since it was installed and mail is not working right. I have an appt with Apple tomorrow but AppleCare has run out. I want to keep this computer going until the new one comes out.
