Don't ask me why their store app isn't smart enough NOT to offer me MacOS because every time I try it it says my computer is not supported. So why offer it?

Ive just 'downgraded' from 10.12 back to 10.11.6 on my rMB. It was way too flakey. Preview was constantly crashing, causing the spinning wheel of death. Couldn't save PDFs from email attachments without the computer hanging. Both Word and XL had spinning wheel of death. Basically unusable in my work situation. Wont be upgrading for a while while they sort their **** out.

Thanks for the heads up, MR. I'll get disabling that option. :)

So then why did you enable it in the first place? I assume because you wanted to download every update Apple pushed out. Those of us who wanted to be picky left the option unchecked.

But you know what? I've been using Sierra on two Macs and my daughter on one Mac and so far no problems.

Thank you MacRumors. Option Disabled. Not gonna let our production house's machines fall for that.
There is nothing wrong with new software. Just not today. Bad move Apple.

Again, it doesn't auto install the OS. Nobody has anything to worry about in that regard.

Apples decided to "cram it down our throats"

No surprise whatsoever.
If by "cram" you mean giving you the option to install it or not and also the option to disable automatic downloads, then yes. That is certainly cramming.

Thats pretty weird since all my fresh installs have the option on by default.

Annoyingly on my MBP, since installing El Capitan, the option keeps turning itself on. Now its become a routine to keep checking the option and forcing it off.

Another big difference is Microsoft kept all the old OS files, and had an easy downgrade option. For someone not so nerdy, downgrading Sierra to El Cap wont be so easy if they upgraded without knowing what they are getting themselves into.

I dont see the logic in what Apple are doing. If someone wanted to click and accept the OS update, surely they can be asked/nagged and then begin the download if they accept. An automatic download of an entire OS and then giving you the option seems backwards.

And I have not changed my settings, and the option to Automatically check for updates is ON, but Install app updates and Install OS X updates are both OFF. Previous OS X updates have been downloaded in the background.

*hurriedly disables auto updates*
Apple should not have had this automatically enabled in the first place, I'd been using a 4G mobile internet connection today and chewed through a bunch of data before I realised and managed to stop it despite System Preferences showing an error:

"Can't determine if automatic downloads are enabled due to a network problem" with the checkbox showing " - " and being greyed out.

(Solution was to click "Check for Updates", have the App Store open and now Wireshark is no longer reporting the download as progressing.)

Actually that's probably because of the non stop whining and trolling. I saw five reviews for El Capitan about how the red button at the top of windows doesn't close the app entirely like they do on Windows.

I'll say this again... How come iOS app developers cannot make 'unfair' reviews and ratings go away? Sure, customers know some reviews can be stupid, but what about ignorant 1 star ratings?

Apple's arrogance has risen to new heights.....

before you upgrade to macOS, do check if you are using PPTP, it almost kills me. new features were highlighted, but missing features could be noticed only when you encountered a problem.

Apple is so clueless these days. 3rd party devs propably hate Apple quite a lot after this. There is so many things out there that don't work with Sierra yet.

I'd steer well clear for now. My 2013 MBP was happy on El Capitan and only after being in the Apple store on Thursday to know Sierra was working fine with Adobe Cloud suite and of course Final Cut X and Logic Pro X did I decide to update on Friday morning. After running slow and having minor issues for an hour did the mac crash. It is now non responsive to all key combination startup options except Option + D which doing the full hardware test results in all good. Command S and that allows me to run in single user mode and after running fsck -fy twice it reports drive is all good. and Option which allows me to select and authenticate my Wi-Fi, then select a USB key which I have a bootable OSX Sierra on, but that wont go anywhere either.

One bricked MBP until my appointment at the Genius bar on Sunday.

NOT HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

quick -- how can we spin this negative?!
Wasted bandwidth? Wasted bits on a limited-data ISP? Wasted space? My computer suddenly doing completely unnecessary stuff I don't know about? I'm wondering how you can spin this positively. Automatic downloads by default are always horrible.

There are probably so many first-party things that don't work with Sierra yet. It's foolish to install a ".0" version of an OS unless you really don't care about the reliability of your work machine.

Ouch. I imagine someone had a bad day because of that.

Amen. Anything to prevent it downloading constant update versions of iTunes. I mean I never use that program.
I use iTunes a lot and still do not update it unless it's to fix a known and addressed bug. And it always wants to update.

I don't mind it, since newer updates have more security patches.
Updates are not upgrades. Updates usually improve the situation (security, bug fixes) and don't break things. Going from El Capitan to Sierra is an upgrade and as so often before, it unfortunately break things.

Craig federighi wants to force people to upgrade to latest OS so that he can boast about adoption statistics. But will do nothing to fix long-standing bugs in the OS...

My apologies Chris, in retrospect my comment looked like it was a criticism.

I love OS X updates and want to keep it up-to-date and stable. I'm also a big fan of Sierra and encouraged my housemate to upgrade to it on his 17" MBP, just so I could have a play with it! I normally refrain from OS X updates myself because they have a habit of bricking all my Logic AUs -- Native Instruments are terrible with updating for the newer OSs.

I literally just meant "thanks for the heads up MR" with my original comment, as I wouldn't have known about this otherwise. :)

Best wishes and hope you have a great day!

I really hope this doesn't mean that Apple's not going to support older OS versions anymore. I'm already worried about the amount of security updates that were made available only for Sierra. It's been out for a couple of weeks now and a corresponding security update hasn't arrived for El Capitan.

After trying out Sierra on my Macbook Pro and finding ALL the new features to be useless, I've gone back to El Capitan (which I don't like either). Now I've disabled the option for auto updates. I find myself in the situation of disliking all of the latest OSs on the Apple devices that I use. Fortunately, the competition is better than ever before.

I'm trying to figure out a reason to do this update. I use an Android phone and don't have an Apple Watch and everything listed here seems to have to do with integration with those other products.

It seems to me that Apple is way behind the curve with their integration schemes. So many apps and devices work cross platform that I don't need the kind of multi device support they promise. Maybe Apple has better integration but it's not enough for me to want to pay for the premium prices they demand.

Messages? Who uses messages? Maybe I'm an outlier here but I use what most people use for messaging etc. That's why I still use skype, not because it's better but because everybody has it.

I just don't understand how Apple plans to continue this "closed garden" (or whatever it's called) strategy when more and more people are opting for phones and other devices outside of the Apple world.

Uh, this seems like a bit of a rant but I really just came here to say I'm not enthusiastic about Sierra because it seems devoted to people who use Apple products exclusively and I don't.

Welcome to the New Apple. Where an OS update is dangerous and comes with the risk of bricking your device. What I suggest here (if you have access to another Mac), is to create a bootable USB installer drive and use that to reinstall El Capitan. That's what I had to do to get rid of Sierra, as Apple (jerks that they are) would not allow me to install it any other way but to wipe my hard-drive.

You do this by first downloading the El Capitan installer from the app store, then format a flash drive to the Apple format using Disk Utility (leave it named as Untitled). Then open the terminal and copy and paste in "sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app". This will create installation media for you. It takes a while to do this, but don't panic. Then when you boot up, hold down the Option key, and select your flash drive as the installation media. Use the Disk Utility on the flash drive to wipe your hard drive, and then reinstall a fresh copy of El Capitan from there. This will replace the recovery partition of your hard drive with the older OS and give you a fresh new copy.

Hope that's a help.
